Antique Oversize Chinese Peking Rug, Near Square Size, Pale Yellow, 13' x 16'

Antique Oversize Chinese Peking Rug, Near Square Size, Pale Yellow, 13' x 16'

Located in Barrington, IL

A truly beautiful and rare oversized Chinese Peking rug in a near square size from the late 19th century.  This piece features a serene and distinctive pale yellow field with a minimalist open design. At the center lies a striking large medallion, adorned with Fu lion dogs (Foo dogs)—symbols of protection and power—surrounded by elegant cloud wreath motifs, symbolizing peace and celestial harmony. This rug’s composition and style bear a strong resemblance to the revered Ningxia carpets, which originated in the historic Ningxia region—a “wool town” located in north-central China, bordering Gansu and Inner Mongolia. Ningxia rugs have a long history dating back to the 17th century, crafted for use in mandarin residences and aristocratic homes across imperial China. Dimensions: 12’ 10” x 15’ 8" Date of Manufacture: 4th Quarter of the 1800s Place of Origin: China Material: Wool pile on a cotton foundation Condition: Wear consistent with age and use The Persian Knot Gallery, SKU: 1763 Vintage Tibetan Rugs, Tibetan Antique Rug, Tibet Antiques, Antique Tibetan Carpet, Antique Tibetan Carpets and Rugs, Tibet Carpet, Ningxia Rug, Ningxia Carpet, Tibet Wool Rugs, Tibet Flower Rugs, Mongolia Rugs...

1850s Orange Blue Antique Chinese Ningxia Foo Dog Carpet 17'10"x17'10" Wool Rug
1850s Orange Blue Antique Chinese Ningxia Foo Dog Carpet 17'10"x17'10" Wool Rug

1850s Orange Blue Antique Chinese Ningxia Foo Dog Carpet 17'10"x17'10" Wool Rug

Located in New York, NY

Ningxia North Central China 17'10" x 17'10" Circa 1850 Warp: cotton, off white, handspun, Z-4-S Weft: cotton, off white, handspun, 2 shoots alternating Pile: wool, 3 strand, handspun Knot: asymmetric, open left, 48 knots per square inch Sides: one cord, offwhite cotton wrapped End: no original finish This is a particularly large example of a Mandarin official’s carpet with a central medallion displaying nine lion dogs collectively symbolic of success on the national Chin Shih examination which provided guaranteed entry into the national administrative bureaucracy and the wealth devolving therefrom. The nine lion dogs are a rebus for success in the national bureaucracy. The apricot ground features 11 full or partial rows of tree paeonies, flower and stem. This carpet is particularly large and clearly was made for a highly placed official or the wealthy family of a recent graduate of whom great things were expected. The principal was probably Buddhist as indicated by the embroidered ball and precious objects in the medallion. The clouds surrounding the lion dogs form a broken, polychrome circle rather than the usual continuous cloud wreath. This is one of the several features indicating a bespoke order rather than a piece made for the market. Another indicator is the exceptional size, as the standard square Ningxia Mandarin carpet is about 12 to 14 feet square. The main border continues the colour combination, with a now apricot ground and paeonies among floral arabesques. The blue inner stripe is unusual with butterflies alternating with paired peaches...

Silk Embroidery Artwork in a Gilt Frame, France, 19th Century

Located in Auribeau sur Siagne, FR

Silk embroidery depicting two guardian lions, framed in a gilt frame, 19th century. An elegant, hand-embroidered silk piece depicting two Foo lions (or imperial guardian dogs) surrounding a symbolic central medallion. Executed with exquisite detail in cream, blue, brown, and beige tones, this circular composition exemplifies the refinement of Asian-inspired textile arts from the late 19th century. The richness of the embroidery stitches highlights the details of the mythological creatures as well as the stylized clouds that encircle them. Presented under glass in a circular gilt frame with a turquoise blue mat, the work is displayed with particular elegance. At the crossroads of Oriental influences and the European taste for the exotic, this decorative piece is a beautiful collector's item for enthusiasts of textile art, Orientalism, and antique decoration.
