Japanese Inro from the Edo period (1615-1868) created by Kajikawa. Beautiful Inro, created in Japan by one of the Kajikawa family during the Edo period (1615-1868), circa 1810. Has been carefully crafted in carved precious wood with applications of gilding maki-e and decorated with Japonism patterns. All dan trays are attached together with a himo cord. The detailed craftsmanship was a true pleasure to behold. Period: Edo period (1615-1868). Shogunate. This Japanese tsuishu lacquer inro by Zonsei dates to the late Edo period, circa 1850. Of traditional four-case form, the inro is carved throughout in deep cinnabar lacquer (tsuishu), with each side centred by a finely detailed figural scene surrounded by deeply carved scrolling foliage. One side depicts the Daoist immortal Tekkai Sennin, known in China as Tie Guai Li or Iron-Crutch Li. He is shown as a bearded figure exhaling a plume of smoke or mist containing a miniature image of his own spirit, referring to the legend of his ability to project his soul beyond the physical body.. The opposing side shows two seated figures engaged in a game of go (碁) also known as igo 囲碁, the traditional Japanese board game long associated with scholarship and strategy. The borders and edges are richly carved with continuous scrolling foliage, creating a dense decorative surface that extends across the entire body of the inro. Raymond John "Jack" Coutu ARE ARCA (13 September 1924 – 17 May 2017) was an English printmaker, sculptor, etcher, engraver, carver, watercolourist and teacher. He was influenced by Oriental art.Jack Coutu was born Raymond John Coutu at Farnham, Surrey, England, and was educated at Farnham Grammar School.[ On leaving school in 1940, he worked at Abbott of Farnham, a coachbuilding company in Farnham, where his father Bert Coutu was also employed painting coats of arms and heraldic shields. In 1942, at the age of 18 during World War II, he joined the Royal Corps of Signals, where after training he served in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), India, and Singapore. At the end of WWII, he was in Kure, Japan, in the Hiroshima Prefecture. From 1947 to 1951, Coutu studied at the Farnham School of Art, followed by the Royal College of Art in London from 1951 to 1954 and the Central School of Art from 1951 to 1955. At the Central School of Art, Merlin Evans was an influence on Coutu's printmaking. Coutu taught printmaking at the Central School of Art from 1957 to 1965 and then at the West Surrey College of Art and Design in Farnham from 1965 to 1985. In 1968, he started to carve netsuke (as practised in Japan) and he joined the Netsuke Kenkyukai Society, based in the United StatesHe is also a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and the Printmakers Council. Artists and calligraphers usually knew right away, though. A yatate (pronounced yah-tah-teh) is a Japanese portable writing set. The yatate has been around since the Kamakura period (1185-1333). It contains a traditional Japanese bamboo brush and an ink pot filled with cotton or silk which holds liquid sumi ink. Yatate literally means "arrow Stand."
