Hand blown Murano glass bottle by Carlo Moretti, 1970s Measures: Ø cm 12, H cm 25 Carlo Nason, born in Murano in 1935 from one of the oldest glassmaking families on the island, he was a great master glassmaker. He grew up attending the glass masters who work in the family furnace, appropriating the most refined techniques of glass art, demonstrating an innovative and planning attitude that he employed in the field of design, but referring to tradition. In 1925 the Nason Moretti company was founded by the Nasone brothers, specializing in the production of furnishing accessories and tableware, where the mastery of the most refined Murano techniques is integrated with a modern vision and careful chromatic research. In 1955 Umberto Nason created an innovative project of two-tone bowls and glasses that earned him the Compasso d'Oro award. In the 1960s, with the second generation of the family, there was a great development of the company which still maintained its characteristic vocation for experimentation. In the 1980s he looked at lighting with postmodern reinterpretations of designed lights, with the Carlo Moretti Studio line and the series of collectible goblets and glasses. Since the 1990s, the business has focused on new collections conceived in a modern and design-oriented key. Reclaiming simple materials and basic shapes, with an eye to architecture and mountain life, led to the creation of two historic design low table-stools inspired respectively by the milking stool used by mountain shepherds in the French town much loved by the author. Placed individually or in lively arrangements, the two low tables bring the pleasing lightness of solid wood to indoor settings emphasized by the continuity of the grain between the top and the edges and the countless natural variations in the wood. Each piece is made of unique solid wood, so every piece will be different from one another and not exactly as the one on the photos. Both pieces are inspired by the mountains. While the latter takes its name from the milking-stool used by alpine shepherds, the former is inspired by the French locality much loved by designer and architect Charlotte Perriand. In the mid 1990s Richard Klein started working with found glass objects, including bottles, drinking glasses, ashtrays, and eyeglasses. Initially, Klein rejected any object with commercial or advertising content, but in 2015 he became fascinated with the promotional content that was screen printed on ashtrays from the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s. This period was before smoking was looked at as being primarily a negative habit, and iconic American businesses, including Howard Johnson’s, International House of Pancakes (iHop) and Holiday Inn, all produced promotional ashtrays printed with their graphic identity. By the time Klein became interested in these objects, the businesses had either ceased to exist, or had changed their logos, and many of their signature buildings, which where examples of classic, “Pop” roadside architecture, has been torn down or repurposed. The artist wanted to connect the glass objects with the business’s sites that were still recognizable and spoke of their history, so he began researching where original buildings still stood. Klein then embarked on a series of road trips to photograph these sites with the intention of combining the photographs with the promotional glass objects. This led him to as far south as Maryland and as far north as upstate New York from his home in Connecticut. Johnson Hs. & Guest Hs. is an exact replica of an art history slide made in the 1950s picturing Philip Johnson’s Glass House. The slide has been replicated digitally on a much larger scale (23” x 23”) and like the original is made of a cardboard mount that contains a color transparency. The original slide is faded from years of use and most of the color, other than red, has been bleached out. Richard Klein is a Connecticut-based artist, independent curator and writer.
