It depicts the God Krishna as Shrinathji at center flanked by Gopi (cow herd girls) and a herd of cows surrounding, with flying celestials above and framed by floral rosette border. This Pichwai painting is a form of traditional fabric painting that is rooted in Rajasthan, India. They are created and used as backdrops in the Shrinathji temple at Nathdwara and in other Krishna temples. The main theme of these paintings is Shrinathji and his exploits. Shrinathji is an anthropomorphic form of the Hindu god Krishna. The word "Krishna" means black, dark or blue, hence why his skin is often depicted in these colors. Pichwais are painted, printed with hand blocks, woven, embroidered or decorated in appliqué. Pichwais are done in dark rich hues on rough hand spun cloth. These paintings have deep religious roots and are executed with the utmost devotion. Presently Pichwais are painted in Udaipur and Nathdwara.
