Boy Waiting, Portrait of a Young Man by Philadelphia Artist

"Boy Waiting" is an oil on board portrait painting by Philadelphia born Expressionist painter Bernard Harmon of a young man with somber expression, sitting on a chair. This work features a second environmental portrait on verso. The painting is 41.75" x 35.75" in size and is signed "Harmon" on verso. Figurative expressionism in the style of Alice Neel.
Provenance: Estate of the Artist; Gratz Gallery & Conservation Studio, Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
Bernard Harmon was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1935. Harmon was primarily a portrait painter and a well loved teacher in the Philadelphia area. A graduate of the Philadelphia Museum School and Temples Tyler School of Art, Harmon traveled extensively in Europe and South America. Beloved by many, Harmon taught in the Philadelphia School District for 32 of his 54 years of life. Beginning his career as an art teacher at West Philadelphia High School, in the early 1960s he became one of the district's artists in residence, traveling from school to school to demonstrate for students how an artist works. Returning to the classroom, Harmon joined the art department at Central High School where he taught for 14 years and became an innovator in art curriculum, developing a program offering advanced placement art classes to gifted students. In his final years Harmon became a supervisor, mentoring teachers and overseeing programs in the Philadelphia school systems District #1. During his short life Harmon taught collage preparatory art classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, summer classes at the University of the Arts, and a Saturday program for gifted children at Drexel University. Among Harmon's portraits were commissioned by Philadelphia Jazz organist Jimmy Smith and Mayor Richardson Dilworth. Bernard Harmon was active in promoting African American Artist throughout his life time. He organized many early shows such as the "Afro American Artists 1800 - 1969" at the Museum of the Philadelphia Civic Center in 1969. About the artist.
Theo Tobiasse was born in Israel of Lithuanian parents. Before he turned seven, his family moved to Paris due to financial difficulties. In Paris.
Between the years of 1942 and 1944, the Germans occupied Paris. He and his family were forced to live in solitary confinement with the constant fear of being discovered. The only things that kept Tobiasse going was his drawings. By the time it was safe to come out of hiding, he had quite a portfolio put together.
In 1960, his work was noticed at an exhibition of young artists at the Palais de la Mediterranee in Nice and he won first prize. From then on art galleries and collectors continued to show interest in his work, and by 1962 Theo Tobiasse was finally able to devote himself entirely to painting. Theo Tobiasse has created monumental works such as the fountain entitled "L'Enfant fou" for the Arenas Business Centre at Nice Airport, and stained-glass windows for various institutions in Strasbourg and Nice. 1964: c’est l’inauguration du nouveau plafond du Palais Garnier par Marc Chagall commandé par André Malraux alors ministre chargé des affaires culturelles. Commande qui fera couler beaucoup d’encre entre les partisans du modernisme et les tenants du conservatisme. L’indigence d’après-guerre et la difficulté inhérente de trouver les matériaux adéquats et/ou habituels, telles les couleurs, très onéreuses alors, ont poussé les artistes figuratifs de l’après-guerre, en corrélation avec les préoccupations de l’époque, à redéfinir les paradigmes de la représentation.
Il n’est plus question de chercher un sens mais bien pour les artistes d'étudier l’objet pour son intérêt formel, sa qualité intrinsèque. Le regard de l’artiste devient analytique et dépeint alors l’objet pour ce qu’il est et non plus pour son pouvoir évocateur ou symbolique.

Jean Vinay est un peintre français né le 2 février 1907 et décédé le 23 août 1978.
Après des études secondaires, il se passionne pour l’art. Dès 1933, il s’établit dans Paris, à Montmartre et décide de devenir peintre.
Il travaille avec acharnement, se formant principalement dans les musées. Dès le début de l’occupation allemande, il se rend à Alger chez un ami d’enfance et rencontre Albert Marquet qui lui prête son atelier.
Il devient vite un grand nom de la peinture et sera reconnu par tous comme étant “Le peintre de Paris”. C’est à L'Albenc qu’il repose depuis 1978 où il vécut près de sa mère en partageant sa vie entre Paris et l'Albenc. Une importante donation au département de l’Isère, a donné naissance au Musée Jean Vinay qui ouvrait ses portes en 1979 à Saint-Antoine-l'Abbaye en Isère.

This work exhibits many of the themes that preoccupied her during her career, including the repudiation of the distinction between abstraction and figuration, a distinction that preoccupied her mentor Willem De Kooning, the introduction of a female perspective to her art through the reinterpretation of classical art, and the incorporation of a kind of secular, esoteric, materialistic Jewish tradition into her work.
Joffe was serious in a way that many artists today are not: she was an artist engaged with the major questions of her time, attuned to the development of her chosen métier, its intrinsic problems and possibilities.
Joffe's career spans the post-World War II Abstract Expressionist movement to the present. She is known for her powerful images of women and horses, often intertwined, and representing reciprocal ideas of power, grace and beauty. Indeed, one NYT critic said that she returned the beauty and grace to the female form that De Kooning had taken away.
Embraced by the first generation of Abstract Expressionist painters on the East End of Long Island, she represented a link to central figures in the avant-garde of 20th century American art, including such artists as Willem De Kooning (she was a studio assistant), Philip Pavia, Ibram Lassaw, John Little and Balcomb Greene. She did Tai Chi with Elaine De Kooning on the beach in East Hampton. She exhibited nationally in galleries and museums, showing alongside artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Eric Fischel, Linda Benglis, April Gornick, Larry Rivers, and Jackie Windsor.
Joffe also worked with the pioneering Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass, or DUMBO, artists finding a voice within the then emerging New York City avant-garde in the 1970s. Joffe's contribution to the history of Abstract Expressionism is featured in the East Hampton Parrish Museum's "oral histories" series.

'Quay by the Bridge in Paris', watercolour on art paper, by Roland Dubuc (circa 1970s-80s). The broad Parisian river Seine divides the city into the left and right banks. The Left Bank, or Rive Gauche is famous for the Latin Quarter while the Right Bank is better known for attractions like Arc de Triomphe, Montmartre, and the Louvre. A trip here simply isn’t complete without a stroll along this romantic river. And a cruise on the Seine or drinks aboard an anchored boat along the quay is a wonderful experience as well. RACHID KHIMOUNE, Algerian-French artist and sculptor.
Born in 1953 in Decazeville, France. Lives and works in Paris, France.
Rachid Khimoune graduated from the School of Art of Paris in 1974; he initially started to work with painting before choosing sculpture. In 1980 he won the first prize of the Foundation of France. He works in an Art Brut, Naif art style similar to Jean Dubuffet and Enrico Baj.
Being the recipient of numerous prestigious awards and an extensive oeuvre, Rachid Khimoune has been exhibiting since 1975 and his work can be found in several museums, and public and private collections.
The artist behind the project Rachid Khimoune, has been responsible for a number of major, successful public art installations in France. Most famously, the installation close to the Bibliothèque Nationale (National Library) ‘Les Enfants du Monde’ (The Children of the World). Rachid’s newer works are masks and totems cast in bronze: poetic images forged in a furnace. Rachid uses discarded objects and disused parts of machines, to create new human and animal forms. Here his interest in metal-working and Arab art-African art coincides with the assemblage of found objects; one mask is a collage constituted by a large model of the Eiffel Tower stuck into the end of a trumpet. Another has a jerry-can for a face, and the golden patina and surface-working of the bronze does not dispel the idea which this image creates: of a human mouth drinking oil. Born in France to parents from Algeria, Khimoune embraces the role of the artist as a global citizen, using art as a universal language.
