French Impressionist, A Clearing in the Woods, Close Circle Pierre August Renoir

By Lucien Mignon

Located in Cotignac, FR

French Impressionist landscape, oil on canvas by Lucien Mignon a close friend and pupil of Renoir. The painting is signed and dated (1935) bottom left. Presented in carved wood, patinated and gilt Montparnasse frame. A charming view of a wooded glade in a park. Mignon has used his characteristic style, very reminiscent of his master and tutor Renoir, to create a wonderful atmospheric scene. the shade of the majestic trees, the lush green of the grass, the bright pops of red colour of the flowers and the indistinct figures walking along the path. He has created a very successful perspective that draws us in to the scene. A jewel of a painting that would grace any collection or interior. Lucien Mignon (13 September 1865 – 13 March 1944) was a French painter, illustrator, lithographer and pastellist. He was one of the first pupils and disciples of Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Born on September 13, 1865 in Château-Gontier, Lucien René Mignon attended the School of Fine Arts in Angers. He went to Paris and became a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was admitted in 1886. He exhibited at the Salon des artistes Français in 1889, a painting entitled Une Flânerie Sentimentale. He then exhibited with the National Society of Fine Arts (SNBA) from 1895 drawings and paintings of landscapes inspired by Angers. In 1898, at the same Salon, he exhibited three paintings, including landscapes inspired by Fontainebleau. In 1902, he divided his time between the rue du Cardinal Lemoine in Paris and Montigny-sur-Loing, which inspired the landscapes he exhibited at the SNBA, of which he was a member. In 1908, he presented La Liseuse for his last exhibition at this Salon before the First World War. He worked for the publisher Édouard Pelletan, who exhibited his work (February 1896). Around 1909, he left the 5th arrondissement of Paris and settled in Cagnes-sur-Mer, producing Provençal landscapes and motifs; he became close to Auguste Renoir, whose portrait he painted in 1913. Mignon's style is very close to that of Renoir, and his so-called "Ingresque" period. Peaches and Green Almonds, a painting exhibited in Paris at the Musée d'Orsay, dates from this period. In the 1920s, he continued to exhibit at the SNBA. He also carried out commissioned work for the Ministry of Public Works in connection with historic buildings.

Digital C-print Stamped and numbered, verso 24 x 20 inches (Edition of 10) 40 x 30 inches (Edition of 5) 60 x 50 inches (Edition of 3) This photograph is offered by ClampArt, located in New York City. Please note that prices increase as editions sell. Luke Smalley was an American artist known for his photographic work, which pairs a coolly minimalist aesthetic with a retro nostalgia. Images from his early in his career were inspired by fitness manuals and yearbooks c. 1910. This is not surprising since Smalley graduated with a degree in sports medicine from Pepperdine University and worked for a number of years as a model and personal trainer. Smalley shot the bulk of his photographs in his home state of Pennsylvania, using real high school athletes as models. “Exercise at Home” is Luke Smalley’s second major body of work. Shot in and around the tiny Pennsylvania town the artist called home, Smalley revisits themes of adolescent growing pains acted out under the guise of earnest athleticism. Teenagers engage in simple yet strange competitions meant to establish their standings amongst one another. Two youths practice boating safety...

Parisian Street Scene Watercolor on Paper, Signed, Circa 1970s, Framed

By Roland Dubuc

Located in London, GB

'Parisian Street Scene', watercolour on art paper, by Roland DuBuc (circa 1970s). This artwork is a delightful depiction of a Parisian street which scales the hill to the neighbourhood of Montmartre, the home of the basilica of Sacré-Cœur. DuBuc's artworks serve as a love letter to the city of Paris and are recognised by his incredibly charming style. The signed artwork is in good overall condition and has been newly framed with anti-reflective glass. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video of the piece may be provided. About the Artist: Roland DuBuc (1924-1998), French artist, the sixth of 13 children and son of a construction worker. The very precariousness of the family's financial situation forced him to go to work at the age of 14. In extreme poverty, he moved to Rouen where he was lodged by the Salvation Army. During that time he struck up friendships with several artists who gave him advice and taught him techniques of drawing. He moved to other cities later where he met painters including, among others, Fred Pailhès...

"Autumn Park"

"Autumn Park"

Located in Edinburgh, GB

Arkady Alexandrovich Rylov (1870-1939) "Autumn Park", oil on canvas. Signed lower right - A. Rylov. Size 38 x 46 cm, Size in frame 45 x 55 cm. Excellent condition. A graceful, mature tree with branches aflame in golden, amber, and crimson hues commands the foreground, its form arching poetically over a tranquil pond that mirrors the vibrant foliage. Sunlight filters through the canopy, gently illuminating a secluded pavilion nestled amid lush greenery, evoking a sense of serene enchantment and seasonal transience. Rylov's masterful technique and luminous palette blend Impressionist vitality with symbolic depth, rendering the park's quiet splendor in harmonious tones. This evocative work is a testament to the artist's profound affinity for nature's poetic rhythms. Born on 17/29 January 1870 in the village of Istobensk, Vyatka Governorate, Rylov grew up in Vyatka in the household of his stepfather — a notary — as his biological father suffered from psychiatric illness. He studied at the Baron Stieglitz Central School of Technical Drawing in St. Petersburg (1888–1891) under K. Y. Kryzhitsky, concurrently attending the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts. Following military service, he entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1893, joining Arkhip Kuindzhi...

Woman in Sheer Dress, Silver Gelatin Black & White Photograph by Art Shay

By Art Shay

Located in Chicago, IL

At what appears to be a costume party, this beautiful woman, draped in a sheer tunic, must have been the center of attention. Dressed as Aphrodite, she clearly commands those around her. With his camera as his constant companion, Shay was able to capture moments of everyday life and make them extraordinary. This artwork is currently unframed. Contact gallery for framing options. Art Shay Woman in Sheer Dress silver gelatin print 20h x 16w in 50.80h x 40.64w cm 7ED.1.20.12005 ASY12005 “Art Shay’s photography shakes you up, sets you down gently, pats you on the head and then kicks you in the ass.” Roger Ebert “[Shay’s work] ranks with some of the greats of the 20th century.” Ellen & Richard Sandor, Renowned photo collectors “I’ve admired Art Shay’s work for almost forty years, and he keeps getting better. He can do anything with a camera, but what he mostly does is capture real moments and transform them into visual poetry. His work continues to be an inspiration to me.” William Friedkin, Director of French Connection “Art Shay is one of our finest photographers. His work over the past fifty years has artfully captured the beauty, humor, and pathos of America.” Studs Terkel “Art Shay is one of the best photojournalists I know. I’ve been a fan of his work since the early 1950s - before the launch of playboy magazine.” Hugh Hefner “Algren, Terkel, Royko, they gave us a voice. Art Shay gave us a face.” Tony Fitzpatrick, Chicago Artist “Art Shay is America’s Cartier-Bresson.” Thomas Dyja, author of The Third Coast “Chicago’s Art Shay in many ways is to American photography what Nelson Algren was to American writing: that rare and absolutely necessary citizen who’s blessed with a cold eye, a clear head, and a warm heart. What is it about Chicago that keeps giving us men like this?” Russell Banks, Novelist “The best images of Simone de Beauvoir and her times have been passed down to us by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Gisele Freund, Robert Doisneau, Georges Brassai, and in America, the Chicago-based Art Shay, all world-class photographers.” Christophe Loviny, Art Editor, Paris “Art Shay is the best photo-journalist Chicago ever produced.” Arthur Siegel, photographer; IIT Institute of Design President “I have one of Art Shay’s pictures over my desk. It reminds me every morning of my Chicago roots. Arts photos, like me, have the Chicago accent, which may be to say he’s telling you the truth. I think it takes a realist to see the humor in things. I know it takes a realist to see the depths of tragedy. Art’s work is so real it feels like a Madison Street guy tapping me on the forearm.” David Mamet

Alexander Calder, Composition with Circles, from Derriere le miroir, 1976

By Alexander Calder

Located in Southampton, NY

This exquisite lithograph by Alexander Calder (1898–1976), titled Composition aux Cercles (Composition with Circles), from the folio Derriere le miroir, No. 221, originates from the 1976 edition published by Maeght Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1976. Composition aux Cercles reflects Calder’s mastery of rhythm, motion, and form—translating the dynamic energy of his sculptural works into bold, abstract compositions on paper, rich with color and movement. About the Publication: Derriere le miroir (Behind the Mirror) was one of the most important art publications of the 20th century, created and published by Maeght Editeur in Paris from 1946 to 1982. Founded by the visionary art dealer and publisher Aime Maeght, the series served as both an exhibition catalogue and a work of art in its own right, uniting original lithographs by leading modern and contemporary artists with critical essays, poetry, and design of the highest quality. Printed by master lithographers such as Mourlot Freres and Arte, Derriere le miroir became synonymous with the artistic vanguard of postwar Europe. Each issue was devoted to a single artist or theme and published to accompany exhibitions at the Galerie Maeght in Paris, featuring works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Alexander Calder, Fernand Leger, and Alberto Giacometti, among others. The publication reflected Maeght’s belief that art should be both accessible and elevated—an ideal realized through its luxurious production values, meticulous printing, and collaboration with the greatest creative minds of its time. About the Artist: Alexander Calder (1898–1976) was an American sculptor, painter, and printmaker whose pioneering innovations in kinetic art revolutionized 20th-century sculpture and transformed modern visual language. Born in Lawnton, Pennsylvania, into a family of artists, Calder initially trained as a mechanical engineer at the Stevens Institute of Technology before turning to art at the Art Students League in New York—a combination of technical precision and creative imagination that defined his career. Moving to Paris in 1926, he immersed himself in the avant-garde and formed friendships with Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Salvador Dali, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, whose ideas profoundly shaped his artistic philosophy. From Picasso, he absorbed structural invention; from Miro, lyrical abstraction; from Kandinsky, spiritual geometry; and from Duchamp and Man Ray, the courage to merge intellect and play. In Paris, Calder created his famous Cirque Calder, a miniature mechanical circus that introduced motion and performance as central components of sculpture, and by the early 1930s, he invented the mobile—a term coined by Duchamp—to describe his delicately balanced, moving sculptures that responded to air currents. Later, Jean Arp would name his stationary counterparts stabiles. These two inventions—sculptures that could either float and spin gracefully or stand monumentally still—transformed art into a dynamic dialogue between movement, balance, and space. Calder’s signature forms, painted in vivid reds, blacks, blues, and yellows, embodied both joy and precision, creating an art that was at once abstract, organic, and deeply human. Like Kandinsky and Miro, he viewed art as a form of rhythm and emotion; like Duchamp, he embraced innovation and humor; and like Giacometti and Dali, he was fascinated by perception, structure, and the unseen forces of motion. His monumental public sculptures—such as La Grande Vitesse (1969) in Grand Rapids and Flamingo (1973) in Chicago—redefined public art as a symbol of civic optimism and modern progress. A key bridge between European modernism and American abstraction, Calder’s influence extended to artists including Jean Tinguely, George Rickey, Donald Judd, Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Serra, and Olafur Eliasson, whose works in kinetic and spatial art continue to echo his vision. His gouaches, prints, and jewelry carried the same balance and movement as his sculptures, revealing a unified language of rhythm across media. Represented in every major modern museum—including MoMA, the Guggenheim, the Tate, and the Centre Pompidou—Calder remains celebrated for merging engineering, color, and poetry into an art of pure equilibrium. Standing alongside Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, he remains one of the cornerstones of modern art—a visionary whose works breathe with motion, grace, and joy. His highest auction record was achieved by Poisson Volant (Flying Fish) (1957), which sold for $25.9 million at Christie’s, New York, on May 15, 2014, reaffirming Alexander Calder’s enduring legacy as one of the most inventive, dynamic, and collectible artists in the history of modern art.
