David Roberts Art

British, 1796-1864

David Roberts was born outside of Edinburgh, Scotland. At age 10 he became a house painter’s apprentice. He continued painting houses and, eventually, theater scenes in Edinburgh and then in London. Roberts’ friend, J.M.W. Turner, recognized his artistic talent and encouraged him to become a full-time artist.

In 1839 Roberts traveled to Egypt and then in 1840, through the Holy Land, concluding in Jerusalem. Upon his return to England, F.G. Moon agreed to publish lithographs created by Louis Haghe from Roberts’ sketches and watercolors. This publication was highly acclaimed and very popular for its esthetic quality, its historical and topographical accuracy, and Roberts’ dramatic depiction of his scenes. Queen Victoria and Charles Dickens were among the subscribers who collected his works. Roberts’ and Haghe’s duotone lithographs, often colored, remain extremely sought after today and have been rising steadily in value.

"Stone of Unction, Church of the Holy Sepulchre" is a framed 19th century hand-colored lithograph by David Roberts from the large folio edition of his monumental 6 volume publication "The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia", published in London by F. G. Moon in 1843. The lithographs were prepared by Louis Haghe (1806-1885) from drawings and paintings by Roberts. The resultant large folio editions of 'The Holy Land' and 'Egypt & Nubia' are considered by many to be the most beautifully lithographically illustrated works issued in the 19th century. This framed hand-colored lithograph depicts a view of the interior of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. There are priests leading a service and many people at prayer. There are a large number of impressive lamps hanging from the ceiling, as well as very long floor standing candles. This beautiful hand-colored lithograph is presented in an attractive burl wood frame and a cream-colored mat. The framing and glazing utilizes museum quality archival materials. The frame measures 15.75" high, 19.63" wide and 0.5" in depth. The lithograph is in excellent condition. Many additional framed and unframed David Roberts' lithographs of Egypt are available on 1stdibs and on our website, which would make a beautiful display grouping of two or three prints. This is a framed original 19th century hand-colored lithograph entitled "Petra, Shewing the Upper or Eastern End of the Valley" by David Roberts, from his Egypt, The Holy Land and Nubia volumes of the large folio edition, published in London by F. The resultant large folio editions of 'The Holy Land' and 'Egypt & Nubia' are considered the greatest lithographically illustrated works issued in the 19th century. This is one of Roberts' most famous and collectible works. The scene captures a view of the magnificent ruins of Petra in what is Jordan today, as it appeared on March 8, 1839, on the day of Roberts' visit. Multiple Arab men are approaching Petra; some on foot and others riding camels. They are dressed in their colorful local costumes. Questions About David Roberts Art
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 16, 2024
A signed lithograph is an art print produced with a particular method that bears the artist's real signature, signed in ink. The term lithograph refers to a print made by drawing an image onto a stone, etching the stone with chemicals and then applying ink. The term signed lithograph is different from a plate-signed lithograph, where the artist adds their signature to the stone to transfer it onto finished prints rather than signing their works by hand.
