During this time, he also traveled and painted in Europe for two years, living the second year in Florence, Italy. A teacher, Wakeham taught drawing and painting at Stanford and art history and oil painting at College of San Mateo. He has conducted workshops, taught master classes, and juried exhibitions in California, Nevada, New Mexico, Hawaii, New York, Washington, D.C., and Ontario, Canada. An active member of the Pastel Society of America, he taught a workshop for the society (1997) and performed demonstrations (2001, 2004, 2005) and assisted in hanging “Pastels Only” each year since 1998. In 2000, Wakeham was elected to the Pastel Society of America's Hall of Fame in 2000 and, in 2009, named Pastel Society of the West Coast Pastel Laureate. Romana Milutin Fabris, born in 1941 in Dubrovnik, is one such artist: unwavering, devoted, and endlessly inspired. Her artistic education began at the School of Applied Arts in Split and Zagreb, and continued at the Academy of Applied Arts in Belgrade, where she laid the foundations of her distinctive visual language. A pivotal moment in her formation came with an international scholarship from the Austrian government, which enabled her to study in Salzburg under the great master Oskar Kokoschka-a painter of profound expressionist vision, whose spirit echoes in Romana’s work without ever being immitated. From the outset, she forged her own path-intimate but consistent, deeply personal and unmistakably her own. In 1964, she opened her first solo exhibition at the Sponza Palace in Dubrovnik, marking the beginning of a presence on the art scene that has now spanned more than six decades. Dubrovnik occupies a special place in her work. It is not merely the city of her birth, but the city of her soul-an eternal source of inspiration. Its stone walls, austere Mediterranean light, and the lush branches of bougainvillea reappear time and again on her canvases. Through these motifs, we sense belonging, but also poetic distance-for Romana does not paint the landscape as an external scene, but as an inner experience. Her colours speak in silence, her forms exude tranquillity, and the figures in her portraits radiate a depth that reaches beyond the visible. Each painting is a page from the diary of a strong and sensitive spirit, a woman who has preserved a childlike wonder, a profound reverence for beauty, and a lifelong belief in the power of artistic expression. A coastal or maritime landscape with several sailing boats on calm water, viewed towards a distant town or harbour at evening. A tall beacon or lighthouse rises from the rocky shoreline at right, while further along the horizon a low cityscape is visible against the fading sky. The boats are distributed across the water, with the largest vessel in the foreground providing the principal point of focus. The painting is characterized by its restrained blue-green tonality and by the distinctive Nordic light, which remains visible across the night sky rather than giving way to complete darkness. Small warmer passages of ochre and red in the distant horizon and reflections provide contrast to the predominantly cool palette. The relatively broad and visible brushwork gives the surface an atmospheric quality while retaining the clearly defined forms of the boats, shoreline and distant buildings. Despite its modest dimensions, the artist has created a convincing sense of recession from the beach across the water towards Kronborg. Kronborg and the surrounding coastline of northern Zealand were important subjects for Danish artists throughout the 19th century. The area around Helsingør, Kronborg and Øresund attracted painters from the Danish Golden Age onwards, while the coast and fishing communities continued to provide subjects for later 19th-century artists.
