Young Man with Flower
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is arguably the most important American artist of the 20th century. He not only defined Pop Art but had an unrivaled influence on artists and image-making. In recent years there has been new scholarship and increasing commercial interest in Andy Warhol's early works, material created prior to Pop Art. During the 1950's Warhol established himself in New York City as a trendy illustrator contributing to a wide number of fashion publications and retailers. His simple line drawings were modern and gentle, with a subtle but unmistakably gay touch. In a short period of time, he created an aesthetic that was both versatile and distinctively his. Like the consummate artist that he was, Warhol was frequently drawing. The images he created during this era, independent from his fashion commissions, were romantic, hopeful, and unabashedly gay. It is worth emphasizing that Warhol was almost exclusively dedicated to drawing during this period, only creating a handful of paintings - which were intended to be used for window displays. Taschen, the legendary art book publisher, recently released the book Andy Warhol: Love, Sex, and Desire 1950-1962 which celebrates his drawings of the male form from the pre-Pop era. This portrait is a paradigm of Warhol's mastery of line and visionary framing. A man's profile commands the composition as he gazes forward with his hand raised towards his mouth, holding a delicate flower. With the lightest touch, Warhol masterly portrays this male ideal with the details of his chiseled jawline, softened gaze, and timeless elegance. Warhol drawings from the 1950s are marked by a gentle whimsy that embodies Warhol's vivid imagination. With fanciful details such as exaggerated lips and eyebrows, "Young Man with Flower...

"Andes Mountains Peru South America, " Joseph Yoakum, Black Folk Art Landscape
By Joseph Yoakum
Located in New York, NY
Joseph Yoakum Andes Mountains Peru So America, circa 1960s Colored pencil and ballpoint pen on paper 7 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches Provenance: Karen Lennox Gallery, Chicago Private Collection, South Dakota Yoakum began drawing in the early 1960s. Most of his work consists of radiantly colored landscapes with mountains, water, trees, and winding roads in abstract and complex configurations. his period of greatest activity — 1965 to 1970 — when he usually made one drawing a day. Yoakum maintained he had seen all the places represented in his drawings, a statement that may not be true in some instances. He traveled a great deal, beginning in his early teens when he ran away from home and became a circus handyman. Yoakum’s drawings can be considered memory images growing out of either actual or imagined experiences. All of his drawings have titles that grew longer and more specific over the years. He dated his works with a rubber stamp — an oddly impersonal, labor-saving device. Although Joseph Yoakum gave vastly different accounts of his background, he was, throughout his life, classified as an African American. Sometimes Yoakum claimed that he was a full-blooded “Nava-joe” Indian, one of twelve or thirteen children born to a farmer on an Indian reservation in Window Rock, Arizona. At other times he insisted that he was of African-American descent. He described his mother as a strong woman who was a doctor and knowledgeable in the use of herbal medicines. Yoakum’s family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, during his early childhood. His father was employed briefly in the railroad yards prior to settling permanently on a farm in nearby Walnut Grove...

Spring of Hope
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"Spring of Hope," encapsulates the essence of the artwork. Just as spring represents a season of rejuvenation and new beginnings, the woman in this piece embodies the idea of hope blooming anew. The flowing scarf, with its gentle and fluid movement, conjures images of a gentle breeze, carrying with it the promise of better days ahead. Oyindamola's use of color in "Spring of Hope" is both intentional and evocative. She employs soft, pastel hues that evoke a sense of serenity and optimism. The woman's visage radiates tranquility, and her eyes suggest a moment of introspection and inner peace. It's as if she is embracing the beauty of the present while eagerly anticipating the opportunities that the future may hold. The central figure in "Spring of Hope" is rendered with remarkable attention to detail. Oyindamola captures the elegance and grace of the woman, who exudes a sense of poise and strength. Her closed eyes convey a sense of trust and surrender, suggesting a willingness to embrace the unknown with open arms. Symbolism plays a crucial role in this artwork. The scarf, flowing around the woman's neck, is a powerful symbol of continuity and resilience. It represents the idea that no matter the challenges faced, there is always a thread of hope that connects us to a brighter future. The scarf's circular form also signifies the cyclical nature of life, where endings inevitably give way to new beginnings. "Spring of Hope" is a painting that resonates deeply with viewers, inviting them to reflect on the ever-present possibility of renewal in their own lives. The closed eyes of the woman encourage introspection and a sense of connection with the universal human experience of longing for better days. Oyewumi Oyindamola...

My Lady
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"My Lady" is a testament to the artist's admiration for the beauty that women possess in their unique forms. Oyindamola skillfully captures the essence of femininity through the lady's enchanting smile, which radiates joy and confidence. This portrayal challenges society's narrow definitions of beauty, reminding us that every woman, regardless of societal standards, possesses an innate beauty that should be recognized and celebrated. Through "My Lady," Oyindamola emphasizes the crucial need to respect and appreciate all women. The artwork stands as a visual proclamation, demanding that society view women not as objects to be scrutinized or judged but as individuals deserving of dignity and admiration. By depicting the lady with a smile on her face, the artist reminds us that every woman deserves to be seen and treated with respect, acknowledging her inherent worth beyond physical appearances. In "My Lady," Oyindamola captures a sense of empowerment and self-love that every woman should embrace. The lady's radiant smile symbolizes her self-assuredness and acceptance of her own beauty. By presenting this image, the artist encourages women to recognize their own worth and appreciate their individuality. The artwork serves as a reminder that self-love is the foundation for demanding respect and appreciation from others. "My Lady" challenges the stereotypes and societal norms that often diminish the value and potential of women. Oyindamola's artwork sparks a dialogue about gender equality, urging viewers to reflect on the importance of dismantling the barriers that prevent women from fully expressing themselves and realizing their dreams. By portraying the lady as a strong and confident figure, the artist invites us to redefine our perceptions of women and advocate for their empowerment. Through "My Lady," Oyindamola underscores the importance of unity and inclusivity in championing the rights and recognition of all women. The artwork emphasizes that beauty comes in diverse forms and that every woman, regardless of race, age, or background, should be valued and respected. 'Love Garden Party (Picnic #1), ' by Skip Hill, Mixed Media on Vellum, 2019
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
'Love Garden Party (Picnic #1)' is an original mixed-medium work of art composed of high quality acrylic paint, opaque, metallic and neon inks, hand-cut collage, sealed with satin varnish on 36"h x 23.875"w on cold press paper stock. The painting is framed (41.5"h x 29.5”w) with conservation quality, high UV-filtering museum glazing. Signed by the artist. Part of Skip Hill's 'Love Garden Party' series, this work depicts four women gathered around a festive table filled with food and drink with a myriad of disparate objects including masks, Asian porcelain, and flowers. Skip Hill was born in 1961 in Padre Island, Texas but grew up primarily in Oklahoma City. After attending Oklahoma City University to study Advertising and Marketing, he worked as a graphic designer before relocating in 1987 to Southern California. A two-week trip to Thailand in 1989 turned into a year traveling throughout Southeast Asia while writing for a business magazine based in Bangkok. In 1990 Skip Hill relocated to the Netherlands, immersing himself in the culture and learning the Dutch language. His frequent visits the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum and The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam as well as the Boijman Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, sparked Hill’s interest in creating art inspired by aesthetic concerns over the strictly commercial art he produced during his advertising career. It was during this time abroad that he traveled through Germany, Czechoslovakia and Morocco. After returning to Oklahoma in 1993, Skip Hill studied formally at The University of Oklahoma with conceptual artist Hachivi Edgar Heap of Birds, and influential abstract painter George Bogart...
