' The legendary Peter Blake, the father of British Pop Art, is renowned for his love of gathering and collecting the ephemera of life, of memories, of dreams and whimsies, sometimes mingled with those of other historical fantasists. Possessions he regards as symbolic of his relationships with his world, carefully questioning the personal significance of each object in this respect. The scraps of tickets, fragments of plastic, driftwood, pebbles and sycamore leaf in A Walk Through the Tuileries gardens are evocative and ephemeral souvenirs, gathered at the time and collated later perhaps with a whiff of romance. His image takes us, in turn, on a stroll down the wide gravel, under the autumnal trees, a lingering taste of saucisson and red wine on our palate and with a sudden impulse to take a turn on the Caroussel. This whimsical Peter Blake print would make a great gift for any Blake fan. Legendary British Pop Art pioneer British Blake was born in 1932, and after his formal training at the Gravesend School of Art, then at the Royal Academy of Art, he broke away from tradition, producing work from 1960 on that would come to define the British Pop Art Movement. He came to be known as the Grandfather of Pop Art, and his art achieved iconic status with his sleeve for The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Blake’s art draws on imagery from the popular culture of the past and present, as well as from the canon of fine art, thus creating an alternative, more democratic visual aesthetic. He freely mixes the ‘high’ with the ‘low’, ultimately inviting us to see beyond such distinctions. Always playful, and at times irreverent, he sets up the most unlikely juxtapositions across time and space, creating conversations and ‘parties’ to which all are invited. An abiding theme is an investigation, and celebration, of England and Englishness. Collage has always been a hallmark of Blake’s work, allowing him to freely mix found objects and images of people and other artworks; screenprinting, with its use of stencils and layers, lends itself perfectly to this technique, and indeed it was Pop Art that fully realised the potential of screenprinting as a medium for complex replication. Dirk Staschke is best known for his exploration of Dutch Vanitas still life themes in the medium of ceramics. His current body of work explores the space in between sculpture and painting. His work often uses meticulous representation as foil for examining skill and craft. He received his BFA from the University of Montevallo followed by an MFA from Alfred University and has maintained an ongoing studio practice and extensive exhibition record for twenty-three years. During this time, he has taught at many notable universities, including Emily Carr University, Alfred University and New York University. His work has been shown internationally and resides in the permanent collections of several museums including the Smithsonian Museum in Washington (DC), Icheon Museum, World Ceramic Center (Gwango-dong) South Korea, Crocker Museum (CA) and the Portland Art Museum (OR). He has received various artist’s grants including grants from The Virginia Groot Foundation and the Canada Council on the Arts. Produced by Bernardaud Jeff Koons is an American pop artist, born in York, Pennsylvania in 1955 to a mother who was a seamstress and a father who worked as an interior decorator. He is known for working with popular culture subjects and for his reproductions of banal objects. His works have sold for important amounts, including one world record auction price for a work by a living artist. Jeff Koons had an early interest in art and as a teenager he admired Salvador Dalí. He studied painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. As a student he met the artist Ed Paschke who became a major influence and for whom he worked as a studio assistant in the late 1970’s. In 1977 Jeff Koons moved to New York City where he worked at the Museum of Modern Art whilst establishing himself as an artist. In the 1980’s he began working as a Wall Street commodities broker in order to finance his art projects. He wanted to be independent from the art market and has expressed that: ”I could make exactly what art I wanted to make. And I would always know that I didn’t need the art market.” In the mid-1980’s Jeff Koons gained prominence and recognition as part of a generation of artists who explored the meaning af art in a media-saturated era. He set up a factory-like studio in a SoHo loft with over 30 assistants. Since his first solo exhibition in 1980 Jeff Koon's work has been shown in major galleries and institutions throughout the world. His work was the subject of a major exhibition organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art, Jeff Koons: A Retrospective in 2014, which traveled to the Centre Pompidou Paris and then further to Guggenheim Bilbao in 2015. His most recent series, Gazing Ball Paintings, was exhibited for the first time at Gagosian Gallery, New York in 2015. Shae Bishop was born in a small cabin in Tennessee and grew up mainly in Louisville Kentucky where he spent his childhood half at his desk and half in the woods, cultivating his two main passions: art and reptiles. Choosing the path of a maker, he attended the Kansas City Art Institute where he earned his BFA in ceramics and art history. During his time as an undergraduate he also learned to sew clothing and began a studio practice that explored the relationships between ceramics and textiles. Connections between the medias’ cultural histories, pattern-making systems, and interactions with the body led him to start a series of wearable garment sculptures made of interlaced ceramic tiles. After completing a two year residency at Red Star Studios in Kansas City, Bishop moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
