Pablo Picasso
Tete de chevre de profil (Goats head in Profile) Unique color Variant, A.R. 154

1952

About the Item

Created in 1952, Pablo Picasso Tete de chevre de profil (Goats head in Profile) Unique color Variant, 1952, A.R. 154 is an original white earthenware clay round / square dish with embossed decoration (ivory, blue, yellow, black) and an extremely rare color variant. This work is a unique version of the imprint. A similar unique version of the print was sold on May 18th, 2017 for $ 137,500 at Sotheby's New York in their Picasso Man & Beast: Works from the Collection of Marina Picasso Sale. This round / square dish is stamped with 'Madoura Plein Feu' and 'Picasso Original Footprint' stamps on the reverse. The dark, elegant profile of a curious goat emerges against a starry background in the striking Pablo Picasso Tete de chevre de profil (Goats head in Profile) Unique color Variant, 1952, A.R. 154. The goats head is tilted very fast - it's up to the twinkling stars that gleam above. The raised surface of this large-scale dish delineates the outline of the face - a characteristic that is best exemplified by this rare color variant in which the face is monotonous and devoid of painterly coloring. The goat is depicted in geometric lines and shapes, yet looks very lifelike. Picasso's skill at capturing the expression of his subject shines through, even in his animal subjects, we have a mischievous twinkle in this goat's eye. The dark background is contrasted with the bright yellows, vibrant greens, and brilliant blues that dot the composition. Catalogue Raisonné & COA: Pablo Picasso Tete de chevre de profil (Goats head in Profile) Unique color Variant, 1952, A.R 154 is fully documented and referenced in the catalog below arguments and texts (copies will be included in the documentation of the invoices accompanying the sales of the work): 1. A whimsical fish sits placidly in the center of Pablo Picasso ceramic Service Poisson Plate R (“Fish” Service Plate), 1947 A.R. 21. A sweeping light blue back and a peach colored belly make up the body of the fish. Light blue fins crown the back of the fish and a delicate tail parts off the back. Dashes of yellow encircle the rim of the creamy colored bowl, brightening the entire work and creating a dreamy abstracted pattern around the fish. The colors emit a tropical sensation, reminding the viewer of the warmth of the sun and the salty taste of the ocean air. Picasso, who often riffs on ancient Greek...
