Wassily Kandinsky, Untitled, from Derriere le Miroir, 1953 (after)

By Wassily Kandinsky

Located in Southampton, NY

This exquisite lithograph after Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944), titled Sans Titre (Untitled), originates from the 1953 folio Derriere le Miroir, Nos. 60–61, published by Maeght Editeur, Paris, under the direction of Aime Maeght, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris. This plate pays homage to the artist’s groundbreaking geometric abstraction and his profound influence on postwar modernism. Through precise form and rhythmic structure, Sans Titre captures the musicality and spiritual dynamism that defined Kandinsky’s mature visual language, balancing intuitive movement with mathematical harmony. Executed on velin paper, this lithograph measures 15 x 22 inches (38.1 x 55.9 cm), with centerfold, as issued. Signed in the plate and unnumbered, as issued. The edition reflects the exceptional quality and craftsmanship of the Maeght and Mourlot collaborations, honoring Kandinsky’s legacy in fine art printing. Artwork Details: Artist: After Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) Title: Sans Titre (Untitled), from Derriere le Miroir, Nos. 60–61, 1953 Medium: Lithograph on velin paper Dimensions: 15 x 22 inches (38.1 x 55.9 cm), with centerfold, as issued Inscription: Signed in the plate and unnumbered, as issued Date: 1953 Publisher: Maeght Editeur, Paris Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the 1953 folio Derriere le Miroir, Nos. 60–61, published by Maeght Editeur, Paris About the Publication: Derriere le Miroir (translated as "Behind the Mirror") was an iconic French art periodical published from 1946 to 1982 by Maeght Editeur, one of the most influential art publishers of the 20th century. Founded by Aime Maeght in Paris, the publication was conceived as a visual and literary collaboration between leading modern artists, poets, and critics. Each issue functioned as both an exhibition catalogue and a work of art in itself—featuring original lithographs printed directly from the artists' stones or plates, alongside essays, poems, and critical commentary. Over the course of 36 years, Derriere le Miroir produced more than 250 issues and showcased an extraordinary roster of artists including Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Joan Miro, Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Fernand Leger, Pierre Bonnard, Alberto Giacometti, Eduardo Chillida, Ellsworth Kelly, Francis Bacon, Paul Rebeyrolle, Claude Garache, Antoni Tapies, Bram van Velde, Pierre Alechinsky, Pol Bury, Shusaku Arakawa, and Gerard Titus-Carmel. Printed in the ateliers of Mourlot, Arte, and Imprimerie Moderne du Lion, the periodical set new standards for quality in color lithography, combining fine art printing with elegant typography and poetic text. Beyond its visual brilliance, Derriere le Miroir also became a cultural chronicle of postwar European modernism. Each issue coincided with exhibitions held at Galerie Maeght, providing a collectible and widely accessible record of groundbreaking shows. Its integration of image, text, and philosophy created a dialogue between art and literature that elevated the modern art book to new aesthetic heights. Today, Derriere le Miroir remains one of the most sought-after and historically significant art publications, prized by collectors and scholars alike for its craftsmanship, influence, and its role in defining the visual language of 20th-century modernism. The Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul-de-Vence continues to honor this legacy through exhibitions and archival preservation of the series, affirming Derriere le Miroir's enduring place in the history of modern art and fine art publishing. About the Artist: Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a Russian-born painter, theorist, and pioneer of abstract art whose revolutionary vision transformed 20th-century modernism. Regarded as one of the first artists to create purely nonobjective paintings, Kandinsky sought to express inner emotion and spirituality through color, rhythm, and form, believing that art could evoke the same universal harmony as music. His groundbreaking theories on abstraction and the “spiritual in art” shaped the foundation of modern aesthetics and influenced generations of artists worldwide. Closely associated with the Bauhaus movement, he developed a dynamic visual language that combined geometry and lyricism, bridging intuition and intellect. Kandinsky’s legacy resonates alongside the innovations of Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray—artists who, like him, redefined the possibilities of modern art. His works are represented in the world’s leading museums, including MoMA, the Guggenheim, the Centre Pompidou, and the Tate, and remain among the most coveted by collectors globally. The highest price ever paid for a Wassily Kandinsky artwork is approximately $45.6 million USD, achieved in 2017 at Christie’s London for Bild mit weissen Linien (Painting with White Lines) (1913). 'Petrouchka's Predicament' — Mid-century American Surrealism

By Robert Vale Faro

Located in Myrtle Beach, SC

Robert Vale Faro, 'Petrouchka's Predicament', color lithograph, 1946, edition 20. Signed, dated, titled, and numbered '115' and '14/20' in pen. A fine, richly-inked impression, with fresh colors, on heavy, off-white wove paper; full margins (1 1/4 to 2 1/2 inches), in excellent condition. Image size 21 3/4 x 13 3/4 inches; sheet size 24 3/4 x 16 1/4 inches. Scarce. Matted to museum standards, unframed. 'Petrouchka', a ballet with music by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky and choreography by Michel Fokine, is based on the legend of Russian folklore. 'Petrouchka', a puppet made of straw with a bag of sawdust as his body, comes to life and has the capacity to love, a story conceptually resembling that of Pinocchio. ABOUT THE ARTIST Robert Vale Faro (1902-1988) was a well-known modernist architect and artist associated with the Chicago Bauhaus. He received his degree in architecture and design from the Armour Institute in Chicago and worked at L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, from 1924-27, where he was influenced by Harry Kurt Bieg and Le Corbusier. Upon his return to Chicago, Faro worked with the important modernist Chicago architects George and William Keck under Louis Sullivan. Faro founded the avant-garde printmaking group Vanguard in 1945. The group counted Atelier 17 artists Stanley William Hayter, Sue Fuller...

'Dancing' — 'les années folles' Paris Masterwork, 1928

By Yasuo Kuniyoshi

Located in Myrtle Beach, SC

Yasuo Kuniyoshi, 'Dancing', lithograph, 1928, edition 30, Davis L-29. Signed, dated, and numbered '8/30' in pencil. A superb, richly-inked impression, printed on cream chine appliqué on heavy off-white wove backing; the full sheet with wide margins (1 3/8 to 4 7/8 inches), in excellent condition. Printed by Desjobert, Paris. Scarce. Matted to museum standards, unframed. Impressions of this work are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of Modern Art, and Yasuo Kuniyoshi Museum (Japan). ABOUT THIS WORK The French economy boomed from 1921 until the Great Depression reached Paris in 1931. This period called 'Les années folles' or the 'Crazy Years', saw Paris reestablished as a capital of art, music, literature, and cinema. Paris in the 1920s and 1930s was the home and meeting place of some of the world's most prominent painters, sculptors, composers, dancers, poets, and writers. For those in the arts, it was, as Ernest Hemingway described it, "A moveable feast". Paris was home to an exceptional number of galleries, art dealers, and a network of wealthy patrons who offered commissions and held salons. Pablo Picasso, perhaps the most famous artist in Paris, shared renown with a remarkable group of others, including the Romanian sculptor Constantin Brâncuși, the Belgian René Magritte, the Italian Amedeo Modigliani, the Russian émigré Marc Chagall, the Catalan and Spanish artists Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Juan Gris, and the German surrealist...

This exquisite lithograph after Henri Matisse (1869–1954), titled Nuit de Noel (Christmas Night), from Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. IX, No. 35–36, originates from the 1958 issue published by Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1958. Created during Matisse’s final period, Nuit de Noel embodies his profound synthesis of form, color, and spirituality. The composition, evoking the calm radiance of the nativity, expresses a sense of universal harmony through luminous shapes and vibrant contrasts. This piece exemplifies Matisse’s late cut-out technique, where visual rhythm and color convey the serenity and joy of life and faith. Executed as a lithograph on velin du Marais paper, this work measures 14 x 10.5 inches. Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, faithfully capturing the coloristic richness and compositional rhythm of Matisse’s late paper cut-outs. Artwork Details: Artist: After Henri Matisse (1869–1954) Title: Nuit de Noel (Christmas Night), from Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. IX, No. 35–36, 1958 Medium: Lithograph on velin du Marais paper Dimensions: 14 x 10.5 inches Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1958 Publisher: Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Catalogue raisonne reference: Duthuit, Claude. Henri Matisse: Catalogue raisonne des ouvrages illustres. Editions Claude Duthuit, Paris, 1988, illustration 139 Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. IX, No. 35–36, published by Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, 1958 Notes: Excerpted from the publication, Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. IX, No. 35–36, published under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1958. This double issue of Verve was entirely devoted to the final works of Henri Matisse, composed of his celebrated gouache cut-outs, which the artist called “painting with scissors.” Completed shortly before his death, this issue represents the culmination of Matisse’s lifelong exploration of color, rhythm, and spiritual joy through the simplest means of expression. About the Publication: Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire was one of the most influential art periodicals of the 20th century, founded in Paris in 1937 by the visionary Greek-born publisher Teriade (Stratis Eleftheriades). Conceived as a synthesis of art and literature, Verve brought together the greatest modern artists and writers of its time—Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, Fernand Leger, and others—alongside poets and philosophers such as Paul Eluard, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Each issue was a work of art in itself, luxuriously printed by master lithographers such as Mourlot Freres and produced in collaboration with leading typographers and designers. Verve became a platform for avant-garde creativity, publishing original lithographs and essays that reflected the evolving spirit of modernism. Matisse collaborated closely with Teriade from the magazine’s inception, producing some of its most iconic issues, including those devoted to his paper cut-outs. The final Verve issue of 1958, which featured La Tristesse du Roi, the Nu Bleu series, and Nuit de Noel, stands as a testament to Matisse’s enduring genius and to the publication’s legacy as the definitive meeting of art, poetry, and printing craftsmanship in 20th-century France. About the Artist: Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was a French painter, sculptor, draughtsman, and printmaker whose revolutionary vision redefined modern art through his daring use of color, line, and form. Celebrated as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, Matisse led the Fauvist movement and devoted his life to the pursuit of balance, beauty, and emotional expression in visual art. His early works burst with vibrant hues and liberated brushwork, while his later “cut-out” compositions achieved a poetic simplicity that transformed the relationship between color and space. Deeply influenced by the work of Paul Cezanne, Vincent van Gogh, and Georges Seurat, as well as by the rhythmic patterns of Islamic art, Byzantine mosaics, and Japanese prints, Matisse forged a new visual language that celebrated joy, movement, and serenity. He was part of an extraordinary generation of artists who shaped the evolution of modernism, maintaining lifelong dialogue and friendly rivalry with contemporaries such as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Andre Derain, Albert Marquet, and Raoul Dufy—peers who, like him, sought to expand the expressive potential of color and composition. Matisse’s influence extended across generations, inspiring modern and contemporary masters including Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, each of whom drew upon his fearless experimentation and refined visual harmony. His paintings, sculptures, and works on paper are held in the most prestigious museums in the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Tate, and the Hermitage Museum, where his art continues to symbolize the essence of creativity and human emotion. The highest price ever paid for a Henri Matisse artwork is approximately $80.8 million USD, achieved in 2018 at Christie’s New York for Odalisque couchee aux magnolias (1923).
