Jean Auguste Dominique INGRES (Montauban 1780 – 1867 Paris) Apelles holding his palette and brushes Stumped pencil and white heightening on light brown laid paper, laid down on thin card 11 3/4 x 7 1/8 in 30 x 18 cm Signed lower left: “à Mr Visconti / Ingres” This drawing relates to Ingres’s painting The Apotheosis of Homer, completed in 1827 for the decoration of the Musée Charles X in the Louvre (Paintings Department, inv. 5417)—a composition which the artist later revisited in a drawing he worked on for over twenty years (the number of assembled historical figures nearly doubled in the meantime, increasing from forty-two to eighty-two), and which he only completed in 1865: Homer Deified (Louvre Museum, Department of Drawings, inv. RF 5273). It specifically depicts the figure of Apelles, placed on the left in both works, holding Raphael’s hand and presenting the epic Greek poet with a palette and brushes. 1930s Surrealist Still Life Drawing of Alarm Clock and Mandolin by Jan Matulka

By Jan Matulka

Located in Chicago, IL

A captivating 1930s Surrealist graphite still life drawing of an alarm clock and mandolin by notable New York Modern artist, Jan Matulka. Artwork size: 8 1/2 x 11 inches. Archivally matted to 14 x 16 1/2 inches. Estate stamped. Provenance: Estate of the artist. An innovative drawing by Matulka reminiscent of the famed series of Modern works by the American painter and contemporary of Matulka, the New York artist Stuart Davis. In 1927, Davis began work on a series of five paintings based on a still life he had created by nailing an eggbeater, an electric fan, and a rubber glove to a table in his studio. Using this group of incongruous and unlikely items, he created his first truly abstract works. An example of these paintings, Egg Beater...

Bremen #2 - Black and white figurative drawing on paper

By Andy Mister

Located in East Quogue, NY

Photorealistic black and white drawing of rock concert goers - Graphite on paper by Andy Mister. Offered framed. The work of Andy Mister explores the boundary between mechanical and manual reproduction. Working with images appropriated from vintage photographs and deftly mimicking the Xerox aesthetic of punk zines and album covers, removing their specific historical context. Mister’s drawings question how meaning is created or lost through the act of “copying.” Mister says of the arrangement of his images, “It's something like my bedroom as a teenager, filled with images clipped from magazines: bands or writers that I admired interspersed with random images I found aesthetically interesting. I am interested in the relationship between images and connections that the viewer creates when encountering them, connections that I cannot control.” Andy Mister received a BA in English Literature and Philosophy from Loyola University of New Orleans, and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Montana. His artwork has been exhibited at Hirschl & Adler Modern, Turn Gallery, Joshua Liner Gallery, Morgan Lehman Gallery...

A Stylish, Brightly Colored 1950s Mid-Century Modern Abstract Textile Design

By Andre Delfau

Located in Chicago, IL

A stylish, colorful 1950s Mid-Century Modern abstract geometric textile design (in black, yellow, blue, pale pink, red tones) by famed French costume, set and fashion designer Andre Delfau (1914-2000). Artwork size: 15 1/4 x 12 inches; Unframed. Presented in an archival mat measuring 26 x 20 inches (ready to frame). Estate stamped on reverse. Provenance: Estate of the artist. One from a series of related Modern textile designs by Andre Delfau. Please see our other 1stDibs gallery listings. Born in Paris, France in 1914, Andre Delfau became an internationally acclaimed stage, set and costume designer who worked world-wide from the 1930s to the 1980s. Delfau was a life long artist and painted independently of his noted design career. His artwork is recognized for it’s vibrant color and form, and a particularly keen use of line. He was highly influenced by the French Modern trends of Cubism and Surrealism, and his artwork is often infused with a dramatic sense of architecture and perspective. Delfau created fashion designs for such major Paris couture houses as Balmain, Jean Patou and Balenciaga. He completed noteworthy set designs and costumes for numerous international operatic and ballet productions, including those at the Royal Danish Ballet, the Royal Ballet of Great Britain, the Paris Opera, the Dance Theater of Harlem, the Ruth Page International Ballet, the Civic Ballet of Chicago, the Chicago Opera Ballet and the Lyric Opera of Chicago, among others. Most notably, Delfau designed the elaborate stage sets and costumes for the 1986 PBS television production of the Viennese operetta, "Die Fledermaus...
