He studied photography at the London College of Printing, in the 1970s initially working as a photojournalist, but at the beginning of the 80s a growing mistrust in the belief that photography had an absolute capacity to reproduce the subtleties of reality led to a change in his career path. Vitali worked in cinematography for film and television before beginning a fine art practice in 1995. Over the next two decades, he would gain recognition for his highly detailed, epic-scale panoramas — sociopolitical observations of the natural habitat of humankind at leisure. Vitali’s iconic series of beach panoramas, captured from a distance with an elevated large-format camera platform, began in the light of drastic political changes in Italy. Drawing inspiration from Renaissance and Old Flemish masters, in which the central space is fully exploited and the urban or natural landscape becomes the background, Vitali’s photographs grasp the viewer by capturing highly detailed observances of the recreational habitats of modern civilization. Vitali’s work has been collected in six monographs: Beach and Disco, Natural Habitats, Landscapes With Figures, Swimming Pools, Short Stories and Entering A New World. Additionally, his work is represented in the world’s major museums, including the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver, the Fond National Art Contemporaine in Paris, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris, the Fondation Cartier in Paris and the Museo Luigi Pecci in Prato. In his works he explores a universe that lies at the crossroad of abstraction and the figurative, inviting the viewer to determine if what he sees is a reflection of reality or imagination. Through is truly unique approach RIOUX is one of the most innovative artists in digital creations and one of the few creative minds able to blend with such keenness aesthetics research and critical distance. Whether they translate into a Dantesque urbanity or the infinite horizon of a turquoise ocean, the urban territory reflected by his creations offers a dystopian view of the world, challenging our attitude towards the environment and the future. From the onset, RIOUX has no intention of matching IRL expectations of what digital art 'should' look like, but strives to play with our notions of what's real, what's not, how we remember, and how we infer meaning into imaginary visual constructs. --- RIOUX started the Cloud project in 2022. Paul-Emile Rioux’s series Cloud, like his other work, is a kind of aesthetic thought experiment. Each square image is bisected symmetrically, or nearly symmetrically, by a tidy horizon. The upper half display forms that appear as clouds, the bottom as an underwater seascape, yet at the same time mimics the cloudlike formations of above. Formally these works reference hard-edged abstraction, minimalism and abstract expressionism, though juxtaposed with a sort of Instagram lifestyle sensibility. When shown as a gridded series, they recall the Instagram account @insta_repeat which curates gridded typologies of nearly identical influencer photos – for instance sunsets on a beach, or campfires with hiking boot clad feet visible in the foreground, transforming images, which individually are meant to signify the good life, into symbols of stifling homogeneity, cynically trying to capitalize on mass-produced sensations. Unlike past movements in abstract or minimal art, however, Rioux is not striving to create self-contained objects, but windows into deeper currents that churn in the dark spaces where culture, technology and the subconscious flow together. Rioux’s digital works are not specifically images, but notes, ways of thinking. They connect to a larger discourse. With Clouds, Rioux thinks aloud about what is hidden and what is revealed in our relationships to technology and nature. It is a meditation on “the cloud,” which, like real clouds, seem immaterial, but in fact are physical and have a material impact on the world. Rioux considers the juxtaposition between weight and weightlessness – the apparent weightlessness of virtual reality, against the mass, the inescapability of the material world. Technology promises a world of lightness, connectivity and the bounty of limitless growth, or if it cannot quite muster that illusion, at least the offer of escape into a simulated universe of carnivalesque distraction shepherding us away from the environmental catastrophe our economic system inflicts on the earth. Here, we see them only from behind, because they are busy looking at art - a clever photorealist work - art about art - catching people in the process of looking at art. Howard Kanovitz Biography Howard Kanovitz was a leader of Photo Realism: a documenter of style and fashion, depicting members of the art scene at openings, or superimposing known critics and curators onto images of board room meetings. In his particular style, he explored the intersections of painting, photography, fiction, and fact. Kanovitz studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and The Art Studenst League in Woodstock where he worked with Yasuo Kyniyoshi before moving to New York an apprenticing with Franz Kline. As a member of New York’s downtown art scene, Kanovitz painted abstract paintings, which he exhibited at Tenth Street Galleries early in his career. Following his father’s death in 1963, Kanovitz went through family photos, an experience which prompted him to interrogate the relationship between images and perception. At this time, Kanovitz abandoned abstraction in favor of a figurative style and worked arduously in this new direction. These efforts culminated in a 1966 solo exhibition at the Jewish Museum, securing his place as a leader of Photo Realism among artists such as Larry Rivers, Alex Katz, and Chuck Close. His photo based, representational paintings exhibited at the Jewish Museum show were the first to be called “photo-realist” and shocked many in the art community prompting a symposium which was held at the New York Studio School for “downtown artists” to weigh in on this perennial “hot topic”, newly addressed by one of their own. Kanovitz first began using airbrush in 1967, giving his paintings a feeling of photographic perfection. Cut out figures created using this precisionist technique were placed in the viewers space, often in front of Kanovitz’s painted canvas depicting the luminaries of the art world of the time. This type of installation was the centerpiece in the first of several Waddell Gallery shows. The piece ships in the pictured wood frame and measures 44"h x 44"w. Hunter Stabler was born in Jefferson City, Missouri and was raised in upstate South Carolina. He received a BFA in painting from The Maryland Institute, College of Art and an MFA in painting from the University of Pennsylvania. He is currently pursuing an MFA in Digital Art at Louisiana State University. His work has been widely exhibited across the United States and internationally including exhibitions at the Morbid Anatomy Museum in Brooklyn, NY, The Shelburne Art Museum in Shelburne, VT, the Hunterdon Art Museum in Clinton, NJ, and the Islip Art Museum in East Islip, NY. His hand-cut paper artwork has been published in the books High Touch: Tactile Design and Visual Explorations, Push Paper, Strangers in the Nest (a book of Poems by Anselm Berrigan, Letterpress printed with images accompanying each poem), and published in Laminate Magazine, First Look Magazine, and American Craft Magazine.
