What makes an artist a failure?
While strolling through the Metropolitan I was viewing the wing piece of a more extensive altar and observed words etched into the golden grounds.
This had a profound resonance with me because of my fascination and utilization of words in all of my work.
Next I visited the Cloisters and stood transfixed in front of Robert Campion’s “Annunciation”
Of particular interest was the lovely white lily that indicates Mary’s purity.
On this same sojourn I witnessed the line out the door and around the block of people waiting to get into a contemporary artist’s retrospective. Is that success?

Gérard Willemenot was born on February 11, 1943.
The World War and the deportation of his father to Mauthausen will strongly mark his childhood. He is the eldest son of a family of nine children. Very early in conflict with the national education system, he studied art, graduated as a decorator from the Applied Arts and then became a DPLG Architect and Urban Planner, jobs that he mistakenly exercised for twenty-five years!
His childhood and his years of architecture will make him a chronic misfit who hardly likes his time. Unable to remake the world, he will paint it in his own way, offbeat and timeless. Willemenot does not like so-called contemporary painting, which he considers an institutional hoax.
Willemenot's painting is simple. This is so-called “tempera” paint (which he makes himself). This technique, endangered, will be cooked with an immoderate love for the Middle Ages and its mysticism, to which should be added the influence of a few great elders such as Jérôme Bosch, Breughel or Patinir, but also that of contemporary painters such as Albert Drachkovitch or Jacques Poirier...

He studied at the art studio of D. G. Sobolev. Since 1975 he participated in informal exhibitions. In 1977 he joined painting section at the City Committee of graphic artists at Malaya Gruzinskaya, 28. Since 1982 - one of the group "21" leaders, group "20" exhibitions participant.
Creative work
He created a paintings series from several series: 1977 - compositions GEO (geometric unity), 1979 - compositions GEOKON (geometric constructions), 1982 - compositions GEOMED (geometric mediums), 1986 - compositions GEOEX (geometric expressionism) and Pangeometric constants, 1988 - GEMGER (geometric hermeneutics). A new large works series of recent years "Dialogues with Malevich" is a suprematist composition that made on geographical maps of various world regions.
The author's works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, in the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, in the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, in private collections in Russia, Europe, Canada and the USA.

Born in Alabama, John Little attended the Buffalo (NY) Fine Arts Academy as a teenager, until 1927. Soon after, he moved to New York where he began operatic vocal training and opened what would become a very successful textile business designing fabric and wallpaper.
In 1933, he enrolled at the Art Students League under the tutelage of George Grosz. Little’s early work consisted predominantly of landscapes, until 1937, when he began studying under Hans Hofmann and his work naturally shifted toward abstraction.
