Ward Lockwood “Web” 1950s Abstract Mixed Media Painting, Taos Modernist
Located in Denver, CO
“Web” is an original 1950s abstract mixed media painting by important American modernist and New Mexico artist Ward Lockwood (1894–1963). Signed by the artist at the lower right, the composition combines casein and India ink in a sophisticated palette of brown, blue, white, and black. Interwoven lines, organic forms, and layered shapes create a dynamic, web-like structure that reflects Lockwood’s interest in abstraction, experimentation, and modernist design. Lockwood’s work bridges the traditions of American Regionalism, Taos Modernism, and postwar abstraction. His experience in Europe, exposure to Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh, and later involvement with the Taos art community and Federal Art Project helped shape a career defined by continual artistic exploration. The painting is presented in a substantial custom frame, making it an excellent statement piece for a modern, contemporary, or Southwestern interior. It is particularly appealing to collectors seeking historically significant American modernist painting associated with Taos and New Mexico. Frame Dimensions: 29 ¾ x 23 x 2 inches Image Size: 26 x 20 inches About the Artist Born in Kansas in 1894, Ward Lockwood studied at the University of Kansas and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before serving in the U.S. Army during World War I. His military service brought him to France, where he encountered European modernism and was strongly influenced by Cézanne and van Gogh. He later returned to Paris to study at the Académie Ranson. In 1926, Lockwood settled in Taos, New Mexico, where he became closely associated with the Taos art community and the Taos Society...

The Chilean creator, who has been living in exile in New York for decades, is having a major moment, receiving the biggest exhibitions, commissions and awards an artist could dream of.
In 1995, the artist embellished a found poster of Martin Luther King with visionary markings.
In Repetition GL.A, polka-dotted protuberances rise from a surface of rippling net. Here’s what makes the piece so rare.
We spoke with the artist, in one of her last interviews, about the messages in her striking figurative works, which will be featured in a posthumous show at the National Portrait Gallery.
