John Baker’s “The Two Dummies” is an acrylic painting on canvas with collage 32 x 24 x 1.5 inches wide in browns, tans and greys with red and yellow accents. The wooden neck lever of the ventriloquist suggests that he is in reality the dummy of the young boy; and yet, impossibly, both seem to be the dummies of one another! Two Screenprinted pillow cases (one hand signed by Baldessari) in bespoke box
Located in New York, NY
John Baldessari Pillow Cases in Bespoke Presentation Box (one pillowcase hand signed by John Baldessari) for The Thing Quarterly Issue 22, 2014 Silkscreen on 100% cotton 320 thread count sateen pillowcases (Hand signed by John Baldessari) Boldly signed in ink by John Baldessari on one of the pillowcases (see photo) Unframed One of the pillowcases is hand signed in ink by John Baldessari: John Baldessari was one of the artists who were invited to contribute an object (or "thing") with text for a special project for "The Thing" publication (read on for more on "The Thing") ; the conceptual object therefore had to incorporate text. Baldessari's contribution in 2014 was a silkscreened pillowcase with text. A limited (unknown) number of these pillowcases were marketed and sold as a set of two in a bespoke box. However, exceptionally, Baldessari hand signed a very few of pillowcases in ink. This is one of the very special sets bearing one hand signed pillow case - purchased directly from "The Thing". (a copy of the 2014 receipt is shown here.) The rest of these boxed sets were not hand signed. The pillowcase is brand new, and will look gorgeous once pressed and framed by a professional framer. More about this boxed set: Issue 22 of THE THING Quarterly is by LA-based conceptual artist John Baldessari. It consists of two 100% cotton sateen pillowcases featuring an image of a woman clutching a pillow. The black and white image is taken from a Hollywood film still in Baldessari's collection and has been silkscreened on each pillowcase with environmentally-friendly, water-based ink. The pillowcases are standard-sized and envelope-style. For those who like their thread count high, the issue clocks in at a solid 320 thread count. Measurements: Box 10.5 inches by 13 inches by 2 inches Pillow 20 inches vertical by 26 inches What was The Thing Quarterly? THE THING was an experimental publication created in collaboration with Will Rogan as part of an artist residency. We saw it as a quarterly periodical in the form of an object. Each year, four artists, writers, musicians or filmmakers were invited to create an everyday object that somehow incorporates text. The object is reproduced and hand wrapped at wrapping parties and then mailed to the homes of the subscribers with the help of the United States Postal Service. It began as part of an artist residency in San Francisco’s Southern Exposure. Will and I had met in grad school at UC Berkeley and discovered our mutual affinity for quarterlies. He was a librarian at SFAI for five years and I had been a high school teacher for five years. WE were both interested pushing the boundaries of publication. Our plan was to create a 1 year publication with four artists, but from the very start the project generated so much interest and international excitement that we found ourselves running a publication complete with a brick and mortar storefront and a staff of four individuals. After 10 years, 34 issues, 59 projects and countless live events, we decided to end the publication in order to pursue our individual projects. We are still working together on a less ambitious new project, and hope to launch it at some point in 2021. CONTRIBUTORS: have included John Baldessari, Dave Eggers, Miranda July...

Mixed Media Textile Assemblage Collage Painting on Wood Yanira Collado, Miami
Located in Surfside, FL
Yanira Collado (Dominican, American, 1975 ) "Que Ya Estan En El Olvido" Mixed Media unique fabric and painting assemblage collage on plywood Textile, clothing and found material on a custom-made frame. COA signed by the artist on 11/27/2020. Provenance: Oolite Arts, Miami Beach, where Collado was a resident artist. DIMENSIONS: H: 30" W: 24" As a child, Collado traveled between social structures: from Brooklyn, New York where she was born; to the Dominican Republic; to Miami, where her mother worked to become a tailor. Her use of construction materials summons the perception of a displaced personal and public history. She is a Caribbean African American artist with a Feminist leaning. In her practice, Collado displays an awareness of language conveyed through a keen analysis of identity, the latter referenced in her use of reclaimed literary texts and textiles, simultaneously opposed by various construction materials: wood, concrete, masonry brick, iron, and drywall. Materials with inherent geographic histories, processes, and economies imply varying degrees of personalized and public memory. "My connections are grounded to an alternate imagination: a Caribbean imagination and an alchemic consciousness. The Dominican Republic is a culturally rich country. Our musical narratives, folkloric traditions, oral histories, spiritual and supernatural beliefs are complex and embedded in our everyday life. All these components shaped my perceptions, sensibilities, and life experiences. I am always seeing the world through a Caribbean lens". Her artist residency fellowships include Bridge Red Art Center, North Miami, FL (2013-present), Project Row Houses, Houston, TX (2018), Oolite Arts, Miami Beach, FL (2019 – present), and the Joan Mitchell Foundation residency in New Orleans, LA (2020). She was awarded a South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship in 2021, and Ellie Creator Grant from Oolite in 2019, first place in the 2013 South Florida Biennial at the Art and Cultural Center/Hollywood, FL, and a Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship in 2018. Her work has been featured in group shows around the country including Perez Art Museum, Miami, FL; El Museo del Barrio, New York, NY; PRIZM Art Fair, Miami, FL; Storage Project Space, New York, NY; Oolite Arts, Miami Beach, FL; Project Row Houses, Houston, TX; Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, FL; Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, Florida International University, Miami, FL; The Franklin, Chicago, IL; Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL; and NOVA University, Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Collado’s work was pictured in the Artforum Critic’s Pick, accompanying the review of Fragment, a group exhibition at Emerson Dorsch. In 2016, Collado had a one-person exhibit at the Museum of Art + Design at Miami Dade College, in collaboration with Bridge Red Studios. She had solo exhibitions with Dimensions Variable, Under the Bridge and Far Side Gallery in 2018. In 2019, an interview with her and Onajide Shabaka, mediated by Ryan N. Symbol of Memories
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Symbol of Memories 1 is an original painting by Oladimeji Alabi. Oladimeji created the Symbol of Memories with Mixed Media on a 30W by 50H inches primed canvas. The symbol of Memories is inspired by the story of my childhood. The objects and signs we grew up with as a child in our homes become symbols of our memories today. Art has the ability to evoke strong emotions and convey meaningful messages. One such artwork that does just that is "Symbol of Memories," a stunning piece that uses the mother as a symbol of life and hope. This artwork is made even more significant by the use of damask fabric, which was popular among Nigerian women in the late 70s to 90s and used for making gele, the head ties worn by women. The artwork speaks volumes about the importance of mothers in society. The mother is dressed in a vibrant damask fabric, which adds a sense of richness and texture to the painting. The use of damask fabric in the painting is significant as it represents a part of Nigerian culture and history. Damask was a popular fashion among Nigerian women in the late 70s to 90s and was used to make gele, the head ties worn by women on special occasions. The fabric is often associated with elegance, sophistication, and beauty, which adds a layer of meaning to the artwork. The mother in the painting is the focal point of the artwork, symbolizing the importance of mothers in society. Mothers are the backbone of families, providing love, support, and guidance to their children. They are often the ones who hold families together through difficult times, serving as a symbol of hope and resilience. The use of the damask fabric in the painting also represents the concept of memories. The fabric has a rich history in Nigerian culture, and for many people, it is a symbol of their childhood and the memories they hold dear. The painting serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving memories, both good and bad, and how they shape our lives. Overall, "Symbol of Memories" is a beautiful piece of art that celebrates the role of mothers in society. The use of damask fabric adds a layer of meaning to the painting, representing the importance of preserving memories and the rich culture of Nigeria. The mother as a focused subject symbolizes life and hope, the fabric applied in this art is called damask, which was a popular fashion among Nigerian women around the late 70s to 90s used for making gele(the head ties). Energy
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Oladimeji Alabi, a Nigerian contemporary artist, created a thought-provoking artwork titled "Energy," which emphasizes the essence of energy, both positive and negative, according to African spirituality. The artwork is a vivid depiction of the concept of karma, which is fundamental to African spirituality, and the law of nature, which states that what you give out, you get back in turn. The central piece of the artwork is a painting of a human figure, seemingly in a state of contemplation with her flowing hair. "What you give out, you get back in turn." This phrase is a direct reference to the concept of karma, which is prevalent in African spirituality. Karma is the belief that our actions have consequences, and that every action we take has an effect on our lives and the lives of those around us. Furthermore, the artwork emphasizes the importance of energy, both positive and negative, and how it affects our lives. According to African spirituality, everything in the universe is interconnected, and energy flows through all things. Positive energy is associated with good fortune, success, and happiness, while negative energy is associated with misfortune, failure, and sadness. In conclusion, Oladimeji Alabi's artwork "Energy" is a beautiful and thought-provoking piece that embodies the essence of African spirituality. The artwork's central message of karma and the law of nature is a powerful reminder that our actions have consequences and that we must be mindful of the energy we put out into the world. The artwork is a testament to the artist's skill and creativity, and it is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who view it. Harmonious (Mixed Feeling)
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"We are all equal in the fact that we are all different." These poignant words serve as the foundation of "Harmonious (Mixed Feeling)." The artwork beautifully captures the essence of diversity by presenting two women, each with their own distinct features, cultural backgrounds, and experiences. The artist's skillful portrayal of these differences reminds us that our individuality is a cause for celebration, as it contributes to the vibrant tapestry of human existence. "We are all the same in the fact that we will never be the same." This powerful statement challenges the notion of uniformity and emphasizes the beauty of our unique identities. In "Harmonious (Mixed Feeling)," the smiles shared by the two women symbolize a universal language of joy and happiness. Regardless of our disparities, the human capacity to experience and express emotions unites us on a profound level. It is in these shared emotions that we find common ground and build bridges of understanding. "We are united by the reality that all colors and all cultures are distinct & individual." The vibrant colors depicted in the artwork serve as a metaphor for the rich diversity present in our world. Just as a rainbow showcases a spectrum of hues, cultures, and ethnicities contribute to the multifaceted nature of humanity. "Harmonious (Mixed Feeling)" reminds us that it is within the intersections of our varied backgrounds that we can appreciate and learn from one another, fostering a sense of respect and admiration for the tapestry of cultures that surround us. "We are harmonious in the reality that we are all held to this earth by the same gravity." These profound words emphasize the fundamental truth that unites us all: our shared existence on this planet. Regardless of our differences, we are bound by the interdependence of life, breathing the same air and being subject to the same natural laws. The artwork serves as a reminder that, beyond societal constructs and cultural boundaries, we are all interconnected beings, deserving of empathy, compassion, and respect. "I will not blind myself and say that my black brother...

Gold Leaf

Beflowered II
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"Be-Flowered" is deeply rooted in the African cultural heritage of a female child. In African culture, it is revered that a young woman should maintain her sexual purity until marriage, which brings immense joy and honor to her family when her husband finds her a virgin on their wedding night. The title "Be-Flowered" is derived from the concept of "Deflower," which signifies taking away a lady's innocence or dispossessing her of her virginity. However, in this painting series, my premise is centered on empowering women and celebrating their pride and inherent power. The first two pieces of the series feature ladies adorned in traditional South African bids worn during the Virgin festival. The gentle pink clouds symbolize feminine power and poise, evoking the strength and grace embodied by women. A community that empowers women tends to uphold higher moral standards than one that does not. My perspective veers away from the idea of gender equality, recognizing its limitations, and instead, I believe in gender equity, providing each gender with the opportunities they need to fulfill their potential. This series aims to leave my audience with a profound appreciation for empowerment and a celebration of cultural heritage. I hope viewers will reflect on the significance of embracing one's roots while acknowledging the strength and beauty that women contribute to society.
