Jean-Michel Basquiat hand-painted sweatshirt 1979/1980
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Jean-Michel Basquiat (untitled), 'MAN MADE Sweatshirt', c. 1979: Basquiat produced this rare original hand-painted sweatshirt (among others, with only few known to have survived) for the purposes of selling these on his own and through the historic downtown fashion boutique, Patricia Field’s. Basquiat was captured wearing a similar example in the well publicized 1979 photo, 'Basquiat Dancing at The Mudd Club' by Nicholas Taylor of Gray. This double-sided work notably features Basquiat’s ‘MANMADE’ tag - Basquiat’s alias after he took to the streets to declare “SAMO is Dead”. The work is further highlighted by Basquiat’s ‘BAD’ motif - uniquely paralleling his consideration to naming his band, ‘Bad Fools’ prior to Gray. In trademark Basquiat style, we also find the vertically spaced ‘E’ on both sides of the piece, as well as dashed lines which would appear in many of the artist’s Anti-Product cards, early drawings and more. The work emanates directly from the collection of world renowned author Lucy Sante (formerly Luc Sante). As it is well publicized, Basquiat worked with Sante in 1979/80 on the downtown-art scene publication, ‘Stranded’ (New York, 1980). Medium: Acrylic on cotton sweatshirt (double-sided artwork). Executed circa 1979/1980. Dimensions: 16.5 x 22 inches (outstretched cuff to cuff: 50 inches & sleeve length: 18 inches). Condition: In good overall vintage condition. Bright well-preserved colors; some minor discoloration in several areas due to normal age related wear and use; scattered stains located on the hem, inner arm area(s) and cuffs; scattered minor pilling; loose thread on the reverse of hem. Basquiat's artwork throughout remains fully intact. Unique. One of a kind. Signed ‘MANMADE’ and numbered 5/100 on the reverse. Provenance: Gifted by Basquiat to Lucy Sante; obtained directly from the former. Sante's relationship to Basquiat is well documented in three publications (see below literature/references for more). Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Sante. Literature/References: -'Boom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat,' by Sarah Driver - this 2018 documentary features an in-depth section devoted to Basquiat's 'Man Made' clothing, featuring an interview with designer Patricia Field & artist Kenny Scharf. - 'Basquiat Before Basquiat' (MCA Denver; see Sante, p.40-43 ). - 'Stranded' issue four index (Spring 1980). Basquiat's identity is confirmed as 'Man-Made' midway on page. - 'Zeitgeist: The Art Scene of Teenage Basquiat' (Howl Arts 2018; essay: 'Stranded' by Lucy Sante). - 'An Intimate Look at Jean-Michel Basquiat's Early Days' by Lucy Sante (Village Voice 2/8/17). -'Man Made by Basquiat' (MinnieMuse) May 2019. -'Exploring Jean-Michel Basquiat's 1970's Clothing Collection, 'Man Made.'' Vice Magazine, May 2019. - ‘The Jean-Michel Basquiat Reader’ (Moore pg. 334) discusses Basquiat’s Man Made painted clothing. - 'Basquiat Dancing at The Mudd Club' photograph by Nicholas Taylor of Gray (Basquiat wears a similarly painted sweatshirt). Basquiat’s use of ’MAN MADE', see: - Glenn O'Brien "Graffiti '80;" High Times, June 1980 (p. 53-54); "Jean-Michel Basquiat who is known to many as SAMO, had changed his alias to Man Made". - Jean-Michel Basquiat: 1981, the Studio of the Street (Diego Cortez; 2007 p. 80). - The Last Time I Saw Basquiat (NYR Daily 9/3/16; essay by Lucy Sante). - Basquiat: Boom For Real (Barbican; Nairne, Buchhart & Johnson p.26). - Sotheby's S2 Catalog & Sale, "Man Made" (May 2013). Intertextual References: Basquiat's 'BAD' motif further appears in the following 1979 works: - "Stupid Games, Bad Ideas" (color xerox; see Basquiat: Boom For Real pg. 108). - Basquiat (untitled) "Test Pattern" (original drawing and xerox; see Basquiat: Boom For Real pg. 147). - Basquiat (untitled) "Gumby Is Bad" t-shirt (worn on camera by the artist at Canal Zone...

Joan Kahn Indigo Denim Blue Color Abstract Expressionist Modernist Oil Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
Oil paint on heavy paper. (this might possibly be acrylic paint) This does not appear to be signed. Joan Kahn (USA 1953-) grew up in New York City; Princeton, New Jersey; and Vermont; in an environment that patronized the arts. At home her father, a professor, and mother, a state economist and homemaker, collected nineteenth and twentieth century drawings and prints, Middle eastern rugs, and ceramics, pewter, and old tools. Her grandfather, Max Westfield, was an academically trained portrait painter and her great uncle was a well-known gallery owner and art dealer in pre-World War II Germany. One of the influential experiences of Joan’s youth was visiting her grandfather in his studio in Tennessee where the family had first immigrated. Growing up near New York, and spending a year in Paris during high school, provided formative visits to museums and galleries. Joan was academically talented in grade and high school, but after her father’s death during her first years at university she found herself concentrating on studio and history of art. It was a subject above others absorbed and concentrated her focus. Influential in Joan’s development and later work are the historic movements of the Bauhaus and Modernist design and architecture, geometric art and design of diverse cultures, Color Field Painting. Many artists have had a impact on her work, such as Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian, Sonia Delaunay, Mark Rothko, Ad Reinhardt, Antoni Tapies, David Smith, John McLaughlin, Tony Smith, Louise Nevelson, Robert Mangold, Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, Valerie Jaudon, Jasper Johns, James Turrell, Robert Irwin, Vija Celmins, Caio Fonseca, Peter Halley, Ed Moses, Juan Usle, and Nancy Haynes...

Post Modernist Color Pop Art Sculpture Memphis Milano Peter Shire LA Metal Art
Located in Surfside, FL
Peter Shire Night Studio, 1989 Welded steel and aluminum metal sculpture with anodizing and two-part polyester painting, Movable kinetic Elements: yellow vane 27 1/4" tall, 18" wide, and 15" deep. Edition of 24 (not sure if they were all produced, this is not numbered) This piece is unsigned. There is some Paint Loss present, and some small Scratches. Overall, the piece looks to be in Nice shape. Additionally, the yellow squares can turn when they are pushed, or if they are in the presence of a strong gust of air. Peter Shire (born 1947) is a Los Angeles, California artist. Shire was born in the Echo Park district of Los Angeles, where he currently lives and works. His sculpture, furniture and ceramics have been exhibited in the United States, Italy, France, Japan and Poland; Shire has been associated with the Memphis Group of designers, has worked on the Design Team for the XXIII Olympiad with the American Institute of Architects, and has designed public sculptures in Los Angeles and other California cities. Shire has been honored by awards for his contribution to the cultural life of the City of Los Angeles. He is an influential LA ceramicist along with and influenced by Ken Price and ceramic master Peter Voulkos. Of a similar mod vibe to Charlie Hewitt and Brad Howe. The Memphis Milano Group was an Italian design and architecture group founded in Milan by Ettore Sottsass in 1982 that designed Post modern furniture, fabrics, ceramics, glass, and welded, painted, metal objects from 1981 to 1988. The Memphis group's work often incorporated plastic laminate and was characterized by ephemeral design featuring colorful and abstract decoration as well as asymmetrical shapes, sometimes arbitrarily alluding to exotic or earlier styles. They drew inspiration from such movements as Art Deco and Pop Art, including styles such as the 1950s Kitsch and futuristic themes. Other members included Martine Bedin Michael Graves, Javier Mariscal, Nathalie du Pasquier, Matteo Thun and Marco Zanuso. Further reading A Neglected History: 20th Century American Craft. Hardcover. Bound in publisher's original white cloth with spine and front cover stamped in black. Full color illustrations throughout, including several color foldouts. 392 pages. About Alexander Liberman: Considered a revolutionary Minimalist artist, Alexander Liberman produced works that predated the movement by more than a decade. Liberman, not wanting to limit himself to any one form of expression, worked to produce radically minimalist paintings and sculpture in order to illuminate his beliefs about celestial motion, the movement of the eye, as well as human sexuality. The artist’s fascination with American industrialization and modernization ultimately resulted in his widely known red steel sculptures and geometric paintings, which seem to decompose the turbulence of the time period. Alexander Liberman was born in 1912 in Kiev, Russia. He studied first in London and then in Paris. He took courses in philosophy and mathematics at the Sorbonne and architecture at L’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Liberman has had numerous solo exhibitions at museums such as the Jewish Museum, New York (1966); Storm King Art Center, Mountainville, NY (1970); and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1970). His sculpture and paintings are included in the museum collections of the Art Institute, Chicago; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; the Tate Gallery, London and many others. Additionally his public sculpture can be seen in over 40 cities around the world including Honolulu, Los Angeles, Miami, New Haven, New York, Oklahoma City and Philadelphia. Alexander Liberman died in November of 1999 at the age of 87. - Courtesy of Mitchell-Innes & Nass About Barbara Rose: Barbara Ellen Rose (June 11, 1936 – December 25, 2020) was an American art historian, art critic, curator and college professor. Rose's criticism focused on 20th-century American art, particularly minimalism and abstract expressionism, as well as Spanish art. "ABC Art...

Joan Kahn Rome Vibrant Bold Color Abstract Expressionist Modernist Oil Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
Oil paint on heavy tar paper. Hand signed and dated verso.
