Fruit and Flowers monoprint by Calman Shemi Calman Shemi, sculptor and painter, was born in Argentina in 1939. A graduate of the School of Sculpture and Ceramics in Mendoza, he studied under the Italian-Argentinean sculptor Libero Badii whom he credits with putting him on the right path. “He taught me principals, not only related to sculpture, but human and philosophic principals. Shemi also carefully studied the work of such masters as Pablo Picasso, Caravaggio, Frank Stella and Henri Matisse. “From each one of these great artists I learned something from observing them,” he says. In 1961, at the age of 20, Shemi immigrated to Israel and joined Kibbutz Carmia of which he was a member for twenty years. There he worked in agriculture and also as a sculptor working with wood and clay. Several of his large-scale fiberglass and polyester sculpture projects are situated in public buildings. He was a student of German-Israeli sculptor Rudi Lehmann, a pioneer of the artistic movement known as “Canaanism.” Canaanite art was an effort to create a direct relationship with the land, bypassing historic Jewish connotations—hence the land’s primordial name is used. Canaanite works, with an emphasis on the inter-action of simple shapes, bear a deliberate resemblance to the sculpture and ritual art of early civilizations of the Middle East prior to Judaism, always with an eye to the fusion of man and the land itself. Though sculpture dominated his early years as an artist, in the mid ’70s Shemi developed the idea of the “soft painting” medium. Beginning with a color drawing done to scale, Shemi layers onto the drawing irregularly shaped pieces of variously textured and colored fabrics. Using a threadless 9,000-needle sewing machine, the fabrics are meshed to one another and to the background, resulting in vibrant wool tapestry carpet compositions infused with exuberant color and explosive movement. Over the years, Shemi has continued to challenge himself with new artistic mediums, developing two more techniques of painting: “Lacquer paintings” and “window paintings.” He also works in monotype, lithograph and silkscreen techniques. He creates his Lacquer Painting by applying vibrant colors to wood or metal panel that has been gilded with gold or silver leaf, and sometimes both. After the oil paint has thoroughly dried, many layers of lacquer are applied to the surface giving it a glowing effect. Between each layer of lacquer the piece is hand-polished to give the surface its very shiny look. Shemi’s “lacquer” and “window” paintings are reminiscent of ancient techniques used centuries ago in Japan and China. Shemi concludes, “All of the art that I create is full of optimism and beauty. That’s all. Simple, very simple.” During the past eighteen years Shemi has held more than seventy one-man shows in the U.S., Japan, Germany, Spain, Belgium and Israel. This stunning British Victorian Pre-Raphaelite Royal Academy exhibited oil painting is by noted historical female artist and suffragette Jessie MacGregor. She was tutored by Lord Frederick Leighton at the Royal Academy art schools in the 1870's and his influence can be seen here. Painted in 1892 and exhibited that year, the subject matter is when Dante, (1265-1321) later an Italian Florentine poet, first met Beatrice, the love of his life when he was nine. They met in a gathering at her father's palazzo in Florence. She was a few months younger than Dante and dressed in a crimson dress. They never actually spoke for another nine years although Dante often observed her. They were both married off during this time, as was the custom then and Beatrice died aged only 24. Dante remained devoted to Beatrice for the rest of his life and she was his principal inspiration for much of his well known work, such as La Vita Nuova (The New Life) and La Divina Commedia (The Divine Comedy). (see below biography for more details on Dante and Beatrice). This stunning Pre-Raphaelite oil painting depicts Beatrice kneeling on the grass, holding flowers and gazing up at Dante as he stands beside her, hands over her head, perhaps miming crowning her. Other children and their maids dance around them. Beyond them is a Florentine garden with beautiful arches and some figures to the right. To the left one can glimpse the landscape under a summer's sky. MacGregor has portrayed superb detail in the figures expressions and clothing with rich red and gold tones and the vivid blue sky echoing in the little boy's tunic. The brushwork is fantastic. MacGregor painted some fantastic paintings in her time, many of which were exhibited and now hang in art galleries. This painting is a superb example of her work, with excellent provenance and would grace any wall. Signed twice 'Jessie Macgregor/1892' lower right. Provenance. Housed in a gilt frame with ornate flower corners and reeded edge, 87 inches by 57 inches, in good condition. Jessie MacGregor (1847–1919) was a British painter. She was born in Liverpool to a Scottish father, Alexander (1820-1898) and Liverpudlian mother, Sarah (1820-1894). She had an older brother and 7 younger siblings. MacGregor first learned drawing at the drawing academy in Liverpool run by her grandfather Andrew Hunt, a landscape painter. Her mother taught her to use water colours. Her parents went to live in London and she began to study painting there, becoming a pupil at the Royal Academy Schools in 1870 for seven years where her teachers were Lord Leighton, P. H. Calderon, R.A., and John Pettie, R.A. She won a gold medal at the Royal Academy for history painting in December 1871, the prescribed subject being An Act of Mercy. She was the second woman after Louisa Starr's gold medal in 1867, and the last woman to do so until 1909. She first exhibited at the RA whilst still a student, in 1871. She continued with a historical genre when history paintings were broadening their reach towards literature and romance. Her subjects were almost always women or children. MacGregor was made an Academician for the Liverpool Academy of Art in 1874. By 1880 she was using a studio on Elm Tree Road and exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy. in 1884 her brother Archibald also started working from this address and they both had paintings at the RA that year. In 1888 she moved studio to Hill Road St John's Wood. In 1892 MacGregor had two painting at the RA, a portrait of Miss Phyllis Eden and our painting, In the Childhood of Dante. This was described as a fresh bit of Italian Childhood and harmonious colour grouping by the Western Daily Press. Portraits rarely got a mention in the papers but narrative works were much more popular. She lectured widely for the Victorian University extension scheme at the Arts Clubs of Liverpool, the National Gallery and Leighton House museum and other regional centres. A beautiful and important painting by the great artist Enzo Benedetto, an absolute protagonist of the so-called ‘Second Futurism’. It depicts a seascape captured in its essence of natural energy with the waves of the sea crashing powerfully on the coast, probably a glimpse of his homeland, Calabria. This artwork, never before on the market, comes from an important Italian private collection. Enzo Benedetto (Reggio Calabria 1905 - Rome 1993) Benedetto, called Record by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, approached the Second Futurism in 1924 after meeting Mino Somenzi and was active as a Futurist until his death, becoming a tenacious continuer of the movement's principles, revisited in 1967 with the Futurism Today manifesto. Benedetto theorised and practised the union of colour with the word and coined the term chrome-paroise to define the synthesis of painting and writing. In 1926 he promoted the futurist hall for the 4th Calabrian Art Biennial in Reggio Calabria where Depero, Dottori, Tato, Fillia, Pozzo, Benedetto Marinetti and himself, amongst others, exhibited. In 1927 he participated in the National Futurist Exhibition in Palermo. He moved permanently to Rome in 1927 and joined the Manifesto in 1931. In a short time he took part in the ‘great Futurist exhibition’ in Imola, the ‘first exhibition of Calabrian art’ in Rome, the ‘33 Futurists’ exhibition at the Pesaro gallery in Milan, and above all the ‘great Futurist exhibition’ at the ‘international artistic circle’ in Via Margutta in Rome. Benedetto had begun flying in 1926, as a photo of the time documents. That same year, inspired by the exploits of the aviator of the same name, he had executed the painting De Pinedo. He adhered to the Manifesto already signed by Balla, Marinetti, Depero, Dottori, Tato, Prampolini and Fillia, which advocated the triumph of a spatiality enhanced by flight in its dynamic effects and freed from the fixity of the horizon. In World War II he was imprisoned in Africa by British troops until the end of the conflict. Benedetto continued his Futurist activities in the second half of the 20th century. From 1939 to 1946 he volunteered for the African campaign and was sent to Libya, after which he was imprisoned for six years in the concentration camps in Alexandria, Ismailia, and in India in Bangalore and Yol in Kashmir. During this imprisonment he was able to paint and some canvases from this period were brought back to Italy, rolled up as personal luggage, In January 1943, he painted Yol, a new psychological oil portrait of Francesco Tommaso Marinetti. In 1946, he returned to Italy and in April 1947 presented his first solo exhibition in Rome. The exhibition dedicated to the great Italian poet and founder of Futurism was opened by Benedetta Marinetti. In World War II he was imprisoned in Africa by British troops until the end of the conflict. Benedetto continued his Futurist activities in the second half of the 20th century. In 1946, he returned to Italy and in April 1947 presented his first solo exhibition in Rome. In 1948 he had a personal exhibition in Capri at the gallery, ‘l'oblò’, and in Reggio Calabria in the Hall of the ‘Francesco Cilea’ Municipal Theatre. In 1949 he took part in the Calabrian Biennial in Reggio Calabria. In 1950 quanta took part with ceramics in the Selective Exhibition of Artistic Craftsmanship in the Angelicum in Milan, and with paintings in the Historical Review of Futurism in the Palazzo di Re Enzo in Bologna. He then held an important solo exhibition in Milan, at the ‘Centro d'Arte San Babila’ and participated in the sixth Quadrennial in Rome. He had a solo exhibition in Fano and another exhibition in Rome in the Galleria del Palazzo delle Esposizioni and in the Galleria del Teatro ‘il Millimetro’. In 1951 he took part in the collective exhibition ‘Mostra Nazionale della Pittura e della Scultura futurista’ (National Exhibition of Futurist Painting and Sculpture) in Bologna, Palazzo del Podestà, with Acquaviva, Giacomo Balla, Primo Conti, Tullio Crali, Fortunato Depero and Gerardo Dottori. In 1953 he took part in the exhibition ‘l'arte nella vita del mezzogiorno’ (art in the life of southern Italy) in Rome and was included in the jury for the awarding of prizes. He also took part in the third exhibition ‘il maggio di Bari’ and in the ‘biennale del mare’ in Rimini. From 1954 to 1960 he took part in many collective exhibitions such as the ‘Sesto Maggio di Bari’, the ‘Villa San Giovanni’ award, the ‘Terni award’, the ‘Avezzano award’, the fifth exhibition of the ‘Triglia d'Oro’, the Michetti award, a personal exhibition in Varese, at the ‘piccola permanente’ In 1961, he stayed in Munich in Germany and exhibited at the Schoeninger Gallery and in the city's ‘Kuntz-Cabnier-Klimt’ studio. Encouraged by his long-standing friendship with Emilio Pettoruti, he also stayed in Paris, where he painted syntheses of the city that were very successful. In 1962, he held a personal exhibition in Venice at the San Vidal gallery and another in Munich at the Wolfgang Gurlit gallery. Margrete Levy 1881-1962 Levy was a Danish artist; she worked in Paris from 1905-1911. Levy was niece to the Danish master painter Kristian Zartmann. She married French author Louis Nicolai Levy in 1911. She applied for technical school at Charlotte Sode and Julie Meldahl's school before applying for admission to the Academy of Fine Arts for Women, where she studied at Viggo Johansen 1900-1902. In 1902 she traveled to Florence as a nanny for a Danish family, giving her the opportunity to study the old masters of the art collections. When she returned home, she continued her education in 1904-05 at Bertha and Dorph's painting school. In 1905, she traveled to Paris and taught at various drawing schools while studying the collections of the Louvre, especially Leonardo da Vinci, who inspired her for the symbolic painting Five Sisters , 1905, which she debuted at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition the following year. 1906-07 she was a student at the French Academy in Rome. With a few interruptions she exhibited at Charlottenborg's Spring Exhibition 1913-43, and on several occasions she also participated in Charlottenborg's Autumn Exhibition and the Artists' Autumn Exhibition. She had several personal exhibitions, including 1910 in Ole Haslunds Hus, 1919 and 1923 in Kunstforeningen, 1927 at Møntergården and 1945 in Alfred Andersen's Art Shop. She participated in several foreign exhibitions, for example Modern Danish Artists in Brighton, England 1912, and Exposition présentée par le Club international Féminin , Paris 1958. She was often represented at exhibitions reserved for women, for example Nine Painters in Admiral Gjeddes Gaard, in 1936 and Nordic Artists in Stockholm 1948. She participated in the Women's Artists Retrospective Exhibition in 1920, which was organized by the Women's Artists Society, on whose board she sat. Along with 18 other members, including Anna and Helga Ancher, Christine Swane, Elisabeth Neckelmann and, Olivia Holm-Møller, she exhibited at the Kunstforeningen in 1930. This superb British 19th century equine oil painting is by noted horse lover, George Gascoyne. Painted in 1889, this French born chestnut horse is Phoenix. While he was essentially a miler, Phoenix (sometimes seen spelled as “Phenix”) came from a family that had produced Classic winners in France at up to 15 furlongs. He proved an excellent sire following his export to Argentina, becoming the foundation stallion for Guillermo Kemmis' breeding program at Haras Las Rosas. This painting is from his time in Argentina with Kemmis. Phoenix is depicted in a flat landscape against a vivid blue sky. A gentleman, possibly his owner, Guillermo Kemmis, stands smiling in front of him holding his reigns and gives perspective to how tall Phoenix is. Although in profile, Phoenix is turning to look at the viewer, his chestnut coat gleaming and his anatomy perfectly portrayed. This is a superb Victorian equine portrait of a noted horse in the 19th century and is a lovely example of Gascoyne's work as a horse lover. Signed with initials and dated GG 1889 lower right. Notable progeny: Hawk Eye (ARG), Lenape (ARG), Marinera (ARG), Osiris (ARG), San Martín (ARG), Surplice (ARG) Connections: Phoenix was owned by Comte Frédéric de Lagrange. After being exported to Argentina, he stood at Haras Las Rosas, the stud farm of leading Argentine breeder Guillermo Kemmis. His last known foals were born in 1894.
