Evert Moll (Dutch, 1878–1955) Rotterdam harbor painting, a signed original oil on canvas: a steamship, tugboats and barges in Dutch Impressionist brushwork. Signed bottom left. A large steamship dominates the right of the composition, smoke drifting from its funnel through the rigging. Tugboats and a sailing barge work the choppy water around it, and a laden barge crosses the foreground. Beyond, the quays and buildings of the port of Rotterdam run along the horizon beneath a broad sky of white and grey cloud. This is the working harbor Moll made his own. It is painted with the quick, broken brushwork and touches of pure color that characterize his marine scenes, with orange, blue and green flickering across the water. The painting is undated. Moll became best known for his views of the port of Rotterdam and the shipping on the Nieuwe Maas painted in the 1920s and 1930s, and this harbor view probably dates from that period. The reverse confirms a pre-war date. The stretcher carries a label of Kunsthandel Gebroeders Koch giving the firm’s Rotterdam address on the Noordblaak, in the city centre which was destroyed in May 1940, alongside its Hague address on the Hoogstraat. Essay: Painted during Carl Johansson’s journey to Tenerife in 1894, Lavaklippstrand presents the volcanic Atlantic coastline as an austere study of rock, water and light. Jagged formations of dark lava dominate the foreground and middle distance, breaking the surface of the sea in an irregular progression towards the horizon. Behind them, the coast dissolves gradually into mist, while the almost colourless sky occupies the upper half of the composition. The painting is unusually restrained for a landscape executed during a period when Johansson had recently encountered the brighter palette of modern French painting. Here, instead, he deliberately reduces the scene to a near monochrome range of blacks, greys, browns and white. Johansson was born in Härnösand in 1863 and studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm between 1882 and 1885, where his teachers included Edvard Perséus and the landscape painter Per Daniel Holm. He belonged to the generation of Swedish artists that increasingly looked beyond academic landscape conventions during the 1880s and 1890s. A beautiful large early 20th century oil on canvas depicting a tranquil beach landscape, by Daniel Sherrin. Excellent quality and condition work by this well known artist on a great scale. The artist lived and worked on the Kent coast and so this work is likely to depict a landscape in Whitstable or Herne Bay. Signed lower left and presented in a bespoke gilt frame. Artist: Daniel Sherrin (English, 1869-1940) Title: Tranquil Beach Landscape Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 25.5 x 35.5 inches (65 x 90 cm) including the frame Daniel Sherrin was an accomplished British painter of landscapes and maritime subjects. He spent the majority of his life in Seasalter, near Whitstable in Kent, where he became a local celebrity of repute. His father, John Sherrin RI RWS (1819-1896), was a painter of delicate still lifes in watercolour and trained by the distinguished William Henry Hunt (1790-1864). However, it’s unlikely that he provided any early tuition for his son as he actively dissuaded the young lad from entering the profession. As such, Sherrin was instead apprenticed to Peter Moore, a draper in Canterbury, while using any spare moment to sketch. It’s reported that he’d rise at 4am and complete a painting before breakfast. His artistic training beyond this point is unclear as several sources refer to him studying under Benjamin Williams Leader RA (1831-1923) although this is likely to be anecdotal rather than based on any facts. It’s plausible that he was actually self-taught and diligently studied from nature to hone his draughtsmanship. While still a teenager, Sherrin was offered a substantial contract by a significant picture dealer in London. Working rapidly, he could produce an extraordinary number of works to order - an attractive proposition. Several dealers sought his services and perhaps it’s fair to say that the speed of his production led to a raft of works, which failed to demonstrate his true ability. Given the right motivation, his landscapes were on a par with those of many leading contemporaries.
