Alfred Edouard Tourillon (1871 1942) Still Life - Basket of Shrimps Oil Painting
Located in Meinisberg, CH
Alfred Edouard Tourillon (French, 9.9.1871 - 9.2.1942) Still life with a basket of shrimps, seaweed and a lemon • Oil on canvas mounted on canvas, stretcher ca. 38 x 46 cm • Vintage shabby chic frame ca. 60 x 69 cm • Signed bottom right Alfred Edouard Tourillon was born on September 9, 1871 in Livry in Seine et Oise, (Today Livry-Gargan in Seine-Saint Denis). He was born into a world, where painting has been going through unprecedented upheavals for two decades. The Academies of Fine Arts are called into question, the traditional approach to subjects and genres is shaken up and recently, painters have been indulging in a revolutionary concept of light and color. New techniques and outdoor plein-air painting lead to a new style of painting. Tourillon was attracted early in his life to the fine art of painting. At a very young age, he rubbed shoulders with artists living in the Nouvelle Athènes district in Paris and was eventually apprenticed by Denis-Pierre Begeret (1846 - 1910), who recognized Tourillon’s extraordinary talent for detailed composition in still lifes and landscapes. Based in Lagny, Alfred Edouard Tourillon went on to exhibit at the Salon des Artistes in 1896, 1898, 1899, 1900 and 1901 and received plenty of recognition for his talent from collectors, as well as from his peers. In 1899, he received an honorable mention by "Le Salon des Artistes Français" in Paris for "Les Artichokes". This painting was later acquired by Baron Alphonse de Rothschild and is held today at the Museum of the city of Draguignan. Tourillon would frequent the neo-impressionists of the Lagny group, meeting artists such as Maximilien Luce, Camille Pissaro, Henri Cortes Émile Gustave Cavallo-Peduzzi, being especially friendly with Léo Gausson and André Cortes...

Group portrait painting after the hunt, oil on canvas
Located in London, GB
This charming painting depicts a group of gentlemen gathered around a kitchen table and admiring an English Setter. The snowy rooftops, just visible from the kitchen window, combined with the lit fire and holly decorating the picture frames in the room, implies that this is a Christmas scene. It also appears that the gentlemen have just returned from a fox hunt, and are now warming themselves, drinking port and smoking long pipes by the fire. Five men — three gathered behind the table and two standing in front — are identically dressed in long black riding boots...

Plinio Colombi (1873 - 1951) Thistle Still Life - Oil Painting, 1949 Switzerland
By Plinio Colombi
Located in Meinisberg, CH
Plinio Colombi (Swiss, * 14.2.1873 Ravecchia † 22.9.1951 Spiez) Disteln (Swiss Thistles) • Oil on artist board ca. 47.5 x 49.5 cm • Frame ca. 57 x 60 cm • Signed & dated 1949 lower left Well known Swiss landscape painter and still life painter. He enjoyed painting the Swiss alpine thistles, of which we have an accomplished example here on offer. Plinio Colombi commenced in 1893 to study architecture at the technical college of Winterthur in Switzerland. He then changed direction and began to occupy himself with fine art. He ends up in Paris, hanging out with the artistic crowd of the day. Plinio then return to Switzerland, probably for financial reasons and settles in Bern to earn a living as painter/decorator. In his free time he creates landscapes, which display a closeness to the symbolist painter Arnold Böcklin. From about 1905 on, somewhat influenced by a young Ferdinand Hodler, Plinio begins to develop his own, unique naturalistic stile. Colombi paints subjects all over Switzerland and eventually settled down in 1924 in Spiez on the Lake of Thun, at the foot of the Bernese Alps. From that point on he creates his famous light flooded lake- and landscapes in all seasons and focuses on painting Swiss...
