Monserrate (Contemporary Landscape Painting of a Mountain in Columbia)
Located in Hudson, NY
Contemporary landscape painting of Monserrate in South America, neutral palette with light white mist over a dark green mountain 36 x 60 inches oil on canvas, unframed (thin wood stripping only) Painting is wired on the back for installation Magnificent contemporary landscape painting of "Monserrate", a mountain near Bogota in Columbia that rises 3.152 meters above sea level. All downtown Bogotá, south Bogotá and some sections of the north of the city are visible facing west, making it a popular destination for watching the sun set over the city. Bill Sullivan expertly paints wispy clouds that settle down around the mountain's peak. About the work by John Ashbery: With only a tinge of irony, Bill Sullivan makes new the vast spaces and swooning optimism of nineteeth-century Luminist painting. Reaffirming the contemplation of nature as its own reward, he also sets new tasks for painting and undertakes them with compelling eagerness. While there has been a tendency among some contemporary artists to present a revisionist view of the "great outdoors" of nineteenth-century landscape painters, Sullivan has no satirical agenda. After spending several years in South America amid the landscapes that attracted Frederic Edwin Church and Martin Heade, among others, he refined and strengthened this awesome imagery after returning to New York. A certain surreality floats though these vaporous visions of Columbia, though this may just be the result of Sullivan's careful documentation of scenes that looked unreal to begin with. About the Artist: Sullivan attended Silvermine College and earned an M.F.A. from The University of Pennsylvania, where he studied with Fairfield Porter, Neil Welliver, Jane Freilicher, John Button and Rudy Burckhardt. He also studied privately with Josef and Annie Albers. In the late 1960s, Sullivan joined Bowery Gallery, an artist-run gallery that was dedicatedto figurative art. Later, when the Alliance of Figurative Artists was starting, Sullivan organized weekly panels and discussions at The Educational Alliance. Sullivan's first solo show at Bowery Gallery in 1970 included paintings depicting people, New York cityscapes and still lifes. After this show, Sullivan developed an interest in landscape painting. New York City, the Hudson River and Manhattan's West Side highway became his main subjects. He had several shows of these paintings at Bowery Gallery and continued to paint the Hudson River until the end of his life. At one of these shows he met art collector G. W. Einstein, who became his friend and represented him for many years. Sullivan had his first solo show at G. W. Einstein Company in 1978. In 1977, Sullivan met Colombian writer Jaime Manrique; they traveled to Colombia, where Bill painted the places that Frederick Edwin Church and Martin Johnson Heade had painted in the 1850s. In Colombia he had a solo show in the Bogotá Museum of Modern Art in 1978. The years following his return from South America was the period when Sullivan's work was most in display in New York City. Sullivan remained in New York City until 2001 where he had several solo shows. In 2002, he settled in Hudson, New York, where his two nineteenth-century heroes, Frederick Church and Sanford Robinson Gifford, had lived. He painted many of the sites Church and Gifford rendered on canvas. "Post Progress" Oil painting
Located in Denver, CO
Todd Carpenter's (US based) "Post Progress" is an oil painting that depicts a black and white vast landscape with telephone poles overrun with brush and dense foliage, and mountains in the distance Bio/artist statement: Todd Carpenter is a Los Angeles based artist who uses black and white paint to explore the perception of space and beauty. Carpenter's formal education is in science - he holds a MS in Neuroscience from UCSD and a BS in Psychobiology from UCLA - and he brings this background into service when making art. His paintings explore the mechanisms of perception and aesthetics, examining among other things how the depiction of light can impart realism and convey emotion. Like his paintings bridging art and science, Carpenter's career has similarly straddled the two fields, and he has taught subjects ranging from neuroscience and environmental science to photography and painting. Artist Statement As a painter, I am particularly interested in how the depiction of light contributes to our experience of paintings. Painting, as with any visual art, is obviously dependent on light. But painting can also have a more specific connection in that the accurate depiction of light is crucial for achieving realism. Realism in paintings largely arises from the portrayal of depth - perceiving a painting as being realistic is equivalent to seeing its subject as existing in more than just the two dimensions of the picture plane - and one of the mechanisms by which humans perceive depth is through lighting cues. Light creates features such as shading, shadow, and contrast that tell us about the three-dimensional arrangement of our surroundings, and artists often use these features to impart realism to paintings. Light also factors in to the emotional impact of paintings. The differential illumination of our surroundings can evoke different moods, as evidenced by the influence sunsets, candlelight, and darkness can have on us. Such effectssuggest that our perception of light could be tied to primitive instincts, with light signaling factors such as shelter, nightfall, and warmth, which were once crucial for survival. The depiction of light in...

‘Having first pursued my interest in landscape through photography and urban design, I have turned to landscape painting. This has led me to become a more analytical observer of the many forces operating in the environment and our responses to them. The paintings are unusually wide perspective, precisely rendered, yet also contain freely created elements. I attempt to use composition and light to generate a twenty-first century perception within the continuing tradition of landscape painting.’ Terry...

Jigsaw
Located in Fairfield, CT
Represented by George Billis Gallery, NYC & LA --Every painting begins with a place to stand. Sometimes I find one in seconds; sometimes the hunt goes on for many seasons. A canvas can easily frame the everyday. But my task is to trap the exceptional. Whether I am outside on site, or in the studio working from memory, painting is a personal, idiosyncratic process founded in obsession, and wonder. "My subjects are genuine locations. They all have names, and many have familiar and private associations. But my attraction to a particular street or building often comes, in part, from a suspicion that it is also, in a sense, nameless. I nurture enduring relationships with a terrain. But for me, a particular motif resonates when it seems eligible for a larger catalog of spatial forms. My paintings are less portraits of Brooklyn than pages in an expansive, borderless inventory of space and light. Their index-like titles and typically symmetrical or balanced compositions intend to hint at something of the monumental, appropriate to a classifying program. It is neither the landscape's planning nor its architecture which conjures the shapes I paint. Rather, it is its observation; it is how a place appears that forms a distinct typology. At street level, tight, box-like canyons of space offer motifs best captured in a square format, while aerial, panoramic views from a rooftop invite me to explode them in a wider canvas. When looking around to frame a wider view, the optical distortions of curvilinear perspective weave parallel lines into trajectories mirroring the dome of the sky. And on a clear day, the path of the sun traces analogous curves across it. Only turning achieves a panoramic view, and sky and street are themselves revealed as events. At times, glare, fog, rain and snow are also deliberately organizing factors in my choice of standpoint. I wait for and design with all of them. Land maps posit an objective viewpoint. But star maps...

What do you think? Right side or Left side?, 2018
Located in Atlanta, GA
I was born in 1972 in Chartres. I live and work near Orleans. After having taken courses at the Beaux Arts in Orléans in drawing of live models, sculpture and painting, I decided to devote myself entirely to painting. Education ARTISTIC APPROACH: When the day fades, the truth appears in the light of the twilight. The whole being, invaded by the padded silence of the advancing night, sees his humanity bend under the awakening of his senses. He becomes again more instinctive, more animal, more true in the beauty of his solitude ... and the return to nature that the twilight imposes, then sends him back an exact image of himself...
