Flower Garland Surrounding the Virgin and Child, after Jan Brueghel the Elder (flowers), Circle of Frans Francken II (figures), Antwerp, circa 1615–1625, Oil on copper This finely executed garland painting on copper belongs to the Antwerp tradition of collaborative devotional cabinet pictures developed in the early seventeenth century. The meticulously rendered floral wreath may be associated with the circle of Jan Brueghel the Elder, while the central figures are attributable to the circle of Frans Francken II. The copper support, favored for high-quality works of this type, provides an exceptionally smooth surface that permits minute precision of detail and preserves the jewel-like luminosity of the colours. Set against a dark, subtly modulated background, the oval garland appears to float freely within the pictorial field, leaving the corners and margins open and lending the composition an airy sense of balance. The wreath is constructed from a carefully orchestrated rhythm of large, voluminous blossoms—roses in varying hues, carnations, anemones, and marigolds—interwoven with a profusion of smaller flowers, leaves, and stems. Our finely painted work depicts The Triumph of the Bacchus as a young boy and is one of the most popular mythological subjects in Antwerp at the beginning of the 17th century. Feasting, wine and fun are the themes that constantly appeal to the public. Thus unfolds before our eyes on our painting the procession composed of nymphs, baccantes, fauns, satyrs and children, their bodies naked, partially covered with brightly coloured draperies that help to brighten up the parade. Playing various instruments, dancing and drinking, while carrying vases and poles adorned with grapevines, participants to the rhythm of a noisy brass band make their way to an ancient temple standing on the right. The exaggerated gestures convey to us the frenzy of the excited crowd. The Child Bacchus follows the joyous procession, carried by satyrs and nymphs, crowned with ivy and joyfully raising a cup of wine. In the foreground, the drunken participants leave the procession, the children on the left and the group of bacchantes and satyrs on the right are resting among various objects scattered at their feet: cups, vases, ewers bear witness to the festivities in progress. In the background, a hilly landscape stretches out on the horizon, a semblance of calm that contrasts with the bustle of the foreground. The artist strives to multiply the many details, whether it be figures, costumes, flowers or vegetation, in order to demonstrate his know-how and the perfection of his execution. The acidulous palette with fresh and varied colours is characteristic of Hendrick Van Balen's works. Inviting the accidental while painting, the artist's materials continue to reveal limitless possibilities for improvisation, like jazz music. Influenced by scientific theories-both real and imagined, kitsch, music, decorative art and indigenous textiles, Fagan's abstract paintings and interactive performance build connections between color and surface to sound. This exploration has led to creating a series of interactive games with viewers, the most recent being The Alphabet Game. To play, viewers select, from colored squares, the color(s) that best represent each note in the familiar ABC Song melody. Through these playful interventions their thoughts about color and music are explored in-depth. Documenting their responses in the form of photographs and notes in journals, Fagan has compiled the results of fifteen artists who played the Alphabet Game during a lecture on color where the artist was the guest presenter in order to create this particular painting. Fagan distilled the data gathered and painted this visualization of a color/sound alphabet based on the colors selected by this artist's group.
