This ability to alter or enhance reality is the very crux of what an artist is all about, and their success at attaining this is usually the defining element as to their stature in the field, as either an abstract or realist painter. Occasionally a painter is able to combine these two distinct disciplines and create an art form, which holds a viewer’s attention by balancing the paradox of the flat painted surface with the illusion of depth and space. "As a painter, it is important for me to address the concerns of painting what has been done-and what can I add to this. My work on aluminum is an attempt to use the qualities of refracted light, and have these qualities interact with the painting. The completed image is produced both by refracted light, created by the use of various wire brushes and paint airbrushed in transparent layers. Within this process about half of the image is produced by refracted light alone, simulating paint, and about half by paint." Knox Martin was born in 1923 in Barranquilla, Colombia. He was the son of the aviator, painter, and poet William Knox Martin, the first man to fly over the Andes Mountains. After serving in World War II, Knox Martin attended the Art Students League of New York on the G.I. Bill from 1946-1950, where he studied with Harry Sternberg, Vaclav Vytlacil, Will Barnet, and Morris Kantor. In 1954, Knox Martin's friend Franz Kline placed a painting of his in the Stable Gallery Annual. Inviting the accidental while painting, the artist's materials continue to reveal limitless possibilities for improvisation, like jazz music. Influenced by scientific theories-both real and imagined, kitsch, music, decorative art and indigenous textiles, Fagan's abstract paintings and interactive performance build connections between color and surface to sound. This exploration has led to creating a series of interactive games with viewers, the most recent being The Alphabet Game. To play, viewers select, from colored squares, the color(s) that best represent each note in the familiar ABC Song melody. Through these playful interventions their thoughts about color and music are explored in-depth. Documenting their responses in the form of photographs and notes in journals, Fagan has compiled the results of fifteen artists who played the Alphabet Game during a lecture on color where the artist was the guest presenter in order to create this particular painting. Fagan distilled the data gathered and painted this visualization of a color/sound alphabet based on the colors selected by this artist's group. Serse creates drawings by erasure. He covers a sheet of paper with a dense layer of graphite, then ''draws'' on its surface with an eraser. Using photos as his point of departure, Serse renders mountains, bodies of water and trees from the shades of gray that emerge as he plies his eraser. The resulting image is mounted on aluminum. The artwork represents a composition with several silouhettes of musicians at the top, and a desert landscape at the bottom. Laura D'Andrea is an artist who adores both music and natural landscapes, and who manages to combine the two of them in an original way. Laura D’Andrea is an Italian artist and engraver. She was born in Sicily, where she currently lives and works. She studied printing techniques and especially xylography at the Academies of Fine Arts in Rome and Urbino, as well as Philosophy and Literature at the University of Grenoble. Her first exhibition was “La mia Sicilia” (My Sicily) in 1969 at the Galleria Flaccovio in Palermo, where, a few years later, she exhibited with “Hippies a Londra” (Hippies in London). In the 1980s, she moved to Il Cairo in Egypt, where she studied Arabic calligraphy and found the opportunity to realize a series of graphic works to be exhibited at the Egypt Academy of Rome. In those years, she dedicated herself to doing research on the historical Sicilian Baroque art and culture. Between 1986 and 1988, her solo show “L’Immaginario nel Barocco” (The Baroque Culture) took place at the Galleria Artivisive in Rome, at the Museum and Library of Ursino, at the Recupero in Sicily, and at the European Parliament in Strasbourgh. In 2002, she participated in the exhibition “Memoria Greca nel Mediterraneo” (Greek memory in the Mediterranean) in Sicily. In 2007, she exhibited in Rome and in Saudi Arabia. Between 2011 and 2015, she started exploring the world of jazz music, which would become an important subject for her future artworks; in those same years, she exhibited her works in England and in Belgium. Her artworks represent a leap in the Mediterranean Sea, between Sicilian and Arab cultures. Laura D’Andrea loves jazz music: on her canvases, we can perceive the sounds of places and people far in both place and time. Other important elements of her works are calligraphy and Archeoscrittura. Archeoscrittura is a fascinating practice consisting of artists exploring their own genetic memories for finding signs of archaic scriptures. Laura D'Andrea draws inspiration from the depths of her personal memory, and from the study of symbols found in the Archaic writing in the Mediterranean. Her works can be viewed at the Museum of Modern Art Pecci in Florence; at the Museum of woodcut Carpi in Modena; at the Museum of Modern Art Maga in Varese, Milan; at the Museum of Modern Art in Valencia, Spain; at the Museum of Art Mart in Trento and Rovereto with the donation of Mirella Bentivoglio.
