The sheet shows age toning, foxing, surface marks, handling wear and visible edge wear. There are losses, tears and old adhesive / mount marks to the reverse, particularly around the edges and corners. The painted image remains attractive, clear and highly decorative. Description: A charming signed watercolour by L W Rowe, dated 21-10-36, depicting two Highland cattle standing in a rural landscape. The cattle are shown in profile beneath bare trees, with soft fields, a pale path and distant countryside beyond. Their long horns, shaggy coats and strong silhouettes make them immediately recognisable as Highland cattle, giving the work excellent decorative and collectable appeal. The painting is especially attractive for its earthy palette and gentle pastoral atmosphere. The artist uses warm browns, ochres and deep umber tones to describe the animals’ coats, contrasting them with soft greens, muted greys and pale blue washes in the surrounding landscape. The darker Highland bull to the right gives the composition weight, while the warmer russet animal to the left introduces richness and texture. The handling is loose but observant, with the cattle carefully placed within a quiet countryside setting. The trees and background are painted with light, atmospheric washes, allowing the animals to remain the clear focus of the work. The date of 1936 gives the piece additional period interest, while the signed lower-left inscription helps distinguish it from a purely anonymous animal study. This artwork "Couple Holding a Baby" c 1940 is an oil painting on hardboard by noted American artist Victor Thall, 1902-1983. It is signed at the upper right corner by the artist. The board size is 10.75 x 17.25 inches, framed size is 22.25 x 27,75 inches. Framed in original gold wash frame, with fabric liner. it is in excellent condition. About the artist: Victor Thall belongs to that unique American brand of rugged individualist. Working closely for a time with such painters as Gorky and de Kooning, Thall wasn't content to join the burgeoning American clique of Abstract Expressionism. Instead, on the eve of its international recognition, he abandoned New York, making a worldwide tour of indigenous cultures attempting to find a solution to the crisis of abstraction. Thall felt that painting needed to communicate in a way that Abstract Expressionism could not. Using parts of its vocabulary, Thall created work that was modern in spirit but based on fundamental traditions that he believed connected the whole history of art. In this way he resembled his contemporary Max Beckman, and it is fitting that Thall was chosen with Beckman by The New Yorker art critic Robert Coates as the best painter of the 1949 Whitney Annual. Fiercely uncompromising in his opinions, Thall sadly fell into obscurity in his later years. Yet it was a willful obscurity. But America does eventually honor her difficult individualists, even if sometimes years after their deaths. Victor Thall was born in New York in 1902. He studied at the Art Students League under Arthur B. Davies, George Bellows, George Luks, and John Sloan. Further studies were at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He left for Paris in 1924 continuing his studies at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Academie Julien. Returning to the United States in the early 1930's, he became friendly with Willem de Kooning and Arshile Gorky. He participated in the WPA New Deal Art Project of New York City between 1935 and 1939. He taught at the Art Students League in the late forties and was represented in the Whitney Annual of 1949 and 1950. His paintings are in numerous private collections in the United States and Europe. Ellen Powell Tiberino, matriarch of the Tiberino artist dynasty that includes her artist-husband Joseph and three artist-children (Raphael, Gabriel, and Ellen), often looked to Black women and girls as subjects, in the contexts of motherhood, pregnancy, and childhood, as well as subjects drawn from her neighborhood communities. Her work is expressionistic and passionate with dramatic gestures and dark colorism in her figures, but it is also intimate and highly personal. At this point in her career, Tiberino had been struggling with cancer, and as a result, her palette became brighter and more colorful than her former dark palette. "Three Sisters" includes Ellen Powell Tiberino’s self-portrait in the front of the composition, nursing an infant. Tiberino’s two sisters, Joyce and Anne, sit behind her. Tiberino likely paints from memory or imagination here, since her four children were well beyond nursing age when she created this painting. "Three Sisters" is likely among the last large-scale canvases Tiberino completed, opting to work on a smaller scale and while seated as her illness progressed. Tiberino ultimately lost her battle in 1992. "Three Sisters" comes from a private Main Line, PA collection, acquired directly from the artist immediately upon its completion. Framed in original wood strip frame. It is in excellent condition. Tiberino graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1959, where she was awarded a prestigious Cresson scholarship to study in Europe. After returning to the US, she lived and worked in New York until she married fellow artist (Joseph) and returned to her hometown of Philadelphia where she continued to create oil paintings, oil pastels drawings, sculptures, murals, and mosaics.
