Illusion Watch, Pen & Ink on Paper, Black by Modern Indian Artist “In Stock”
Located in Kolkata, West Bengal
Shuvaprasanna Bhattacharya - Untitled - (unframed size) Pen & Ink on Paper , 11 x 8 inches , 2009 (Delivered) One of the most popular series of the Master Artist, The Golden Flute is the artists more romantic renedition of Art. The iconic figures of Krishna, Radha, and Ganesha that found lyrical expression in the Icons series are modern representations and sophisticated idealizations of the same images in the popular media. Krishna is a cosmic musician, and the tune he creates by playing his transcendental flute is embodied with cosmic energy. When Krishna is depicted as being between the age of 5 and 8, it is always with his flute. Therefore, during this period, he is aptly called Murlidhara (murali means “flute,” and dhara means “hold”), signifying the one who holds the flute. He is never without it, whether he is with his mother, on the grazing grounds with his herd of cows, among his cowherd companions or roaming around on the Jamuna banks. Gopis lose their selves in this tune. For them, music becomes the voice of love, which is too passionate and secretive. Style : The city of Kolkata has always figured prominently in his work. His themes come from his personal interactions with its urban milieu - its sickness and sordidness, its violence and vulnerability and all that compounds its existential agony. Shuvaprasanna has depicted varying moods of the city and its people, its places, and all its facets that make the city distinctive. He doesn't merely portray reality as 'matter of fact' and his presentation of reality often has dream-like elements in it. In terms of technique, Shuvaprasanna boasts a precise, finely executed style that yields an unmistakable visual intensity. He works comfortably in an assortment of media, including oil on canvas, charcoal, and mixed media. About the Artist and his work : Born : In Calcutta, 1947. Education : Graduated from Indian College of Art (R.B. University, Calcutta) in 1969. Exhibitions : Shuvaprasanna has had several gallery and museum exhibitions, including at the Tao Art Gallery and at the Chawla Art Gallery, Square One Mall. Several works by the artist have been sold at auction, including 'ABODE' sold at Waddington's 'Fine Prints & Photography Auction' in 2014. There have been many articles about Shuvaprasanna, including 'An exclusive edifice' written by Kunal Ray for The Hindu in 2014. Selected Solo Exhibitions : 2011 - Shuvaprasanna: Recent Works, CIMA, Centre of International Modern Art, India, Kolkata 2010 - Summer Show 2010, CIMA, Centre of International Modern Art, India, Kolkata 2007 - ‘Madhura: The Golden Flute’, organized by Indian Contemporary at Visual Arts Centre, Hong Kong 2006 - ‘The Divine Flute’, Aicon Gallery, USA 2002 - ‘Icons and Illusions’, Gallery ArtsIndia, New York 1998 - ‘An Appreciation of Ted Hughes’, Exhibition of Crow Paintings...

Backyard
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
In "Backyard," the central figure—a woman—commands attention against a backdrop of natural beauty. She stands in her own space, seemingly lost in thought, creating an atmosphere of both stillness and introspection. Adetayo's portrayal of this woman invites viewers to consider the emotions and thoughts that might be coursing through her mind. Is she reflecting on memories? Contemplating her place in the world? The interpretation becomes a personal journey for each observer. The landscape that envelops the woman is not just a passive backdrop but a powerful metaphor. Just as the external world shapes our internal experiences, the landscape symbolizes the myriad influences that contribute to one's sense of self. The woman's connection to the environment around her mirrors the intricate relationship between identity and surroundings. The notion of a "backyard" often evokes a sense of familiarity and intimacy. It is a space that is uniquely personal, and this artwork invites us to ponder what this personal space means for the woman depicted. In much the same way, we are all shaped by our own "backyards"—our histories, cultures, and experiences that come together to form our individual identities. The tranquility of the artwork encourages viewers to embrace the beauty of stillness and contemplation. In a world that often moves at breakneck speed, "Backyard" reminds us of the value of taking a moment to disconnect, reflect, and connect with our own thoughts and emotions. The woman's posture, relaxed and poised, suggests that she is attuned to this moment of quiet introspection. Adetayo's choice to depict a woman adds an additional layer of significance. Historically, women have been portrayed as subjects of scrutiny and objectification, often with their thoughts and emotions overlooked. "Backyard" challenges this norm by presenting a woman as the focal point of a scene that radiates depth and complexity. While "Backyard" is a singular artwork with a specific subject, its themes resonate universally. Regardless of gender or background, the artwork invites viewers to reflect on their own personal landscapes, the spaces they occupy, and the introspective moments that shape their lives. Adetayo's ability to capture such universal themes while maintaining a unique and personal touch is a testament to the power of art to bridge gaps and foster connections across diverse audiences. Italian Scene, Pen and Ink with Wash Painting by Reginald Brill, 1950s circa
Located in Kingsclere, GB
Italian Scene, Pen and Ink with Wash Painting by Reginald Brill, 1950s circa Additional information: Medium: Pen and ink with wash 33 x 48.3 cm 13 x 19 in Reginald " Reggie" Brill was a versastile 20th century artist and teacher. Brill was born in London in 1902 and spent his early childhood there and in Yorkshire. By the time of the First World War, at the age of 13, he was living in lodgings in London, working in a City office and attending St Martins School of Art in the evenings. Considering his lack of education, winning a scholarship to The Slade (now part of University College London) in 1921 where he studied under Henry Tonks for three years, was a huge achievement. On leaving The Slade he found patronage in Lincolnshire, but by the time of the General Strike (1926) he had returned to London and was working on Lansbury's Labour Weekly. He married Rosalie, also an artist, and in 1927 won the Prix de Rome in Decorative Painting. Following two years at The British School in Rome, Brill went to teach at Blackheath School of Art. During 1930 he spent three months painting in Egypt and it was there that he met Col. T G Gayer-Anderson, one of the twin brothers who were to bequeath The Little Hall in Lavenham as a hostel for art students. It was there that Brill retired to act as warden, thus continuing his nurturing of art students until his death in 1972. Brill took up his appointment at The School of Art, Kingston upon Thames in January 1934. It was situated in the Technical Institute (Kingston Hall Road) and Brill found it bohemian and disorganised. He proceeded to inject enthusiasm, order and discipline. Within 5 years of his appointment a purpose-built School of Art was opened in Knights Park. It remained open throughout the war and by 1945 there was a waiting list for places. Under the skilled and totally dedicated direction of Brill, Kingston School of Art became established with national reputation for excellence. In 1961 Sir Charles Wheeler opened the new building at Knights Park. Costing £100,000, this more than doubled the size of the Art School. Brill, was a well-known figure in Kingston. His eloquence made him popular as a guest speaker and his promotion of Art and Design stretched well beyond the doors of Knights Park. Apart from establishing two of the main buildings which makeup what is now known as the Faculty of Design, one of the most visible local contributions he made was the setting up of a topographical collection of paintings depicting Kingston, which has since become known as The Brill Collection at Kingston Museum. Brill gained huge respect and admiration from the hundreds of pupils who studied at Kingston during his 30-year leadership. He published two books, Modern Painting 1946 and Art as a Career 1962, both bearing a strong educational angle. He regularly exhibited along with leading artists of his era at The Royal Academy, both his paintings and his acutely observed drawings. All the while he was a prolific artist, although reading his diaries, intensely self-critical. His perfectionism, acute powers of observation and relentless research can be seen in his drawings, which via the media and methods he explored throughout his life reflect mid 20th century British Art at its most typical. His major series of work, known as 'The Martyrdom of Man', was carried on in parallel to his career as a teacher. These paintings reflect his care for fellow man and depict people at work, e.g., The Operation, The Jury, Linemen, Waiting Room and Rest, which recently sold at Sotheby’s and was specially restored for The Brill Retrospective. His smaller works also play with the theme of everyday events and communication amongst people, such as The Bull Ring and Market Place paintings. Brill's name is associated particularly with human figure compositions, but he also worked on landscapes, portraits and details of plants, animals, interiors etc. As one would expect he moved from one media to another, and his unusual hand painted and cut paper mosaics...

CARLOS CARNERO (1922-1980) ORIGINAL DRAWING BY FERNAND LEGER STUDIO WORKER
Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire
"Landscape" by Carlos Carnero (Uruguay/ French 1922-1980) Pen and pencil on paper, unframed paper: 16.75 x 5.75 inches provenance: the artists estate, Paris Fine original French drawing by the important and fascinating painter, Carlos Carnero (1922-1980). The painting has excellent provenance, having come from the artists estate sale in Paris. The artists close connection to one of the 20th centuries most important artists, Fernand Leger is of important significance, with his own work being widely collected and appreciated. The artist: Carlos Carnero (1922-1980), a native of Montevideo, emigrates to Paris and joins Fernand Léger's studio workshop at the end of the 1940s. Located on the Boulevard de Clichy, the workshop-school has some seventy-five students. At the end of his life, Léger elaborates a protest against Cubism advocates the return to the human figure. The head of the workshop, Nadia Khodasievich, brilliant painter, first pupil of Malevich, then of Leger in the mid-1920s, became the assistant thenthe mistress of this one and the wife in 1952. In the workshop, Carlos Carnero, soon nicknamed "Carlos" is noted for his talent and involvement. In addition to art education, the couple Léger entrusts the task of the secretariat of the workshop: movements of the stocks, inventory paintings, material organization of exhibitions. After the death of Léger in 1955, Carlos becomes very close to Nadia, rigorous in the construction of the posterity of the master. With his new companion Georges Bauquier, they found, on their own funds, the museum Fernand Léger de Biot - Carnero gives his assistance. Carnero's style is very close to that of his master, filled with joy and colorful dynamism. At the beginning of the 50's, he tried the cubisante figuration of the portraits of Picasso then adopts the abstract balances between lines, shapes and colors of Léger. Some dates: Classical studies in Montevideo (Uruguay). 1941 to 1946 School of Fine Arts, architecture section (Montevideo). 1947 Travel grant (Italy, Spain, France). 1948 Painting workshop at André Lhote workshop. 1949 Entered the Académie Fernand Léger, first student, then 1949 to 1955 Assistant-collaborator of Fernand Léger. 1955 to 1970 Collaborator of Nadia Khodasievitch and Georges Bauquier. "Beatificado" Modern Tabloid Inspired Religious Social Commentary Painting
Located in Houston, TX
Modern, large scale social commentary painting by California artist John Valdez. Comes with the original sketch as well as a book about the artist. Inspired by the cover of a Mexican tabloid, Valadez invites the viewer to examine the duality of a society that mourns the death of an iconic religious leader and neglects those close to them who are perhaps deemed not worthy of consideration. The bold red headline reads “El cardenal Gabiri será beatificado” (Cardinal Gabiri will be beatified) above a large accompanying image of the cardinal in his casket and two smaller images, one of sobbing mourners and another of the cardinal sitting at the altar. Dividing the image is a subhead that reads, “El pueblo católico está de luto” (the Catholic people are mourning) placed above a depiction of four young boys who seem to be sniffing glue. The adjacent text reads “The indifference of the adults is the cause behind the issues these forgotten children have to live.” This work was exhibited at the Pacific Standard Time, Long Beach Museum of Art in 2011, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in 2012, as well as the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, IL in 2013. Signed by artist in front lower right corner as well as titled and dated in front lower left corner. Currently unframed, but options are available. Artist Biography: John Valadez...

Di-symo, Pen and Ink on Paper, Laid on Paper Painting by Richard Allen, 1970
Located in Kingsclere, GB
Di-symo, Pen and Ink on Paper, Laid on Paper Painting by Richard Allen, 1970 Additional information: Medium: Pen and ink on paper, laid on paper 56.5 x 56.5 cm 22 1/4 x 22 1/4 in Signed, dated and titled Richard Allen was an Abstract artist of the 20th century who worked across painting, graphic and technological media. Allen was born in Worcester in 1933. Influenced by his father, he attended Shropshire Institute of Agriculture where he studied for a National Diploma. From there he became aware of what he considered his “irrational” yet unshakeable interest in art, since the College shared buildings with Worcester School of Art. Upon the advice of his window-cleaner Bob, Allen decided to apply to the School. Whilst in Worcester he attended Geoffrey Whiting’s pottery course. Allen took national service in 1952 during the Korean War, serving as an engineer. He returned to Worcester in 1954 to study for his A levels and NDD, after which he attended Bath Academy of Art, Corsham, in 1957. He embraced Bath's unconventional teaching of that time and developed a keen interest in abstract painting. In 1959, his last year at Bath, he was commissioned to make a 15 x 9 foot abstract mosaic for a Wiltshire college, in which the first signs of Allen's grid construction, and blocks of colour within a grid, are seen to appear. In 1960 he won an Italian Government Scholarship in Art to study in Ravenna. After only three months in Ravenna, working on restoration of Byzantine mosaics, he moved to the more lively city of Milan in which he worked with large-scale mosaic production. These commercialised mosaics informed his later works, and Allen considers his time in Milan to be one of fruitful cultural interaction. He married fellow Bath Academy of Art student Eve Laurens the next year, and began teaching part time. He taught at Croydon College of Art for eight years, during which time he began working on his Op Art paintings and was awarded the title of Commonwealth Scholar in Art and Architecture. The scholarship gave him the opportunity to study in the Indian Institute for Advanced Studies in Shimla for a year, during which he was able to travel India extensively. During his time in London Allen worked alongside such figures as Bridget Riley and Bruce McLean, their commitment to artistic professionalism informing his own identity as an artist. Allen started experimenting with line, colour, optical effects and the relationship between art and science. His Op Art works relied upon Interferometry, allowing him to lay grid lines over paintings to create visual manipulations. In 1967 he had his first solo exhibition at the University of Sussex. In 1971 he was invited by Malcolm Hughes to join the Matrix group of artists, whose exhibition opened at the Arnolfini Gallery that year which led to a further exhibition at the Whitechapel gallery the following year. The Matrix group was concerned with Systematic painting, which worked to create images that consciously reveal their own methods of construction. This led to his involvement with the Systems movement in music, with performances often accompanying the openings of System exhibitions. Concern with systems informed Allen’s work throughout his life. In 1972 Allen returned to graphic works, namely making large-scale charcoal pieces on canvas. His work at this time was still very much based on the grid and cross. His work was included in the Hayward gallery British painting Exhibition in the mid 1970s, and was also displayed in a solo exhibition at the London Institute of Contemporary Arts. Allen moved to Jersey in 1977, where he continued working with charcoal and exhibiting internationally. The minimalist exhibition ‘Fundamental Painting’ in Amsterdam, 1975, inspired Allen to put together a similar English exhibition. His position on the Committee of the Art Information Registry/Air and Space, enabled him to work on this. The exhibition was held in the Air Gallery in Charing Cross and led to his curation of Fundamental Painting exhibitions in Holland, Belgium, France and Italy. In 1991 he returned to England and began working on his "white paintings", having not worked with colour for twenty years, which were to be his last works. Shortly after his wife Eve died in 1997 he was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease. Allen began working with specially adapted computer software...
