Chinese School, 20th century; After Ren Renfa (Qinglongzhen, 1255-1328). Signed center right in Chinese with artist chop mark for 'Yueshan Daoren' 月山道人, brush name for Ren Renfa. (Qinglongzhen [now Qingpu, Songjiang, Shanghai Municipality], b.1255; d. 1328). Chinese painter. Under the Yuan dynasty (1279–1368) he became an official, rising to the level of Vice-President of the River Conservation Bureau. He was famous for his paintings of horses, which were much admired by both his Mongol and Chinese patrons. In horse painting he followed in the tradition of the Song-period (960–1279) artist Li Gonglin, which was characterized by use of the ‘iron-wire’ line and a minimum of shading. Ultimately, however, Ren’s style can be traced to the Tang (ad 618–907) painters Yan Liben and Han Gan. Ren’s earliest surviving painting is dated 1280, indicating that he was a mature artist by his mid-twenties. Although he worked as an official under the alien Mongol emperors, he was capable of paintings that incorporated clear political messages. The most famous is Fat and Lean Horses (Beijing, Pal. Mus.), in which, according to his inscription, the fat horse...

Cindy Kane (American, b. 1957) Untitled, 1985 Oil on plywood Sight: 31 1/2 x 28 1/2 in. Framed: 39 3/4 x 36 x 2 in. Signed lower right: KANE Signed, titled, dated verso: Cindy Kane, Untitled, 1985 Cindy Kane (American, 1957-) grew up in Washington DC during the Vietnam War era, absorbing the period's powerful political climate. She is a self-taught artist whose multi media work is born out of a deep sense of connection to the political and environmental issues of our times. Her early work was influenced by the experience of living and working at the bottom of the Grand Canyon National Park, where she had the opportunity to document Anasazi Indian pictographs in pen and ink drawings. These images would inform her work for years to come. She draws on personal narrative and experience to create her paintings of maps, birds, toys, and artifacts from nature, often collaging bits of newspaper headlines, pieces of her children's homework, and pages of sheet music beneath layers of color and imagery. In a review of her work, author and critic John Loughery wrote; "Kane leads us into a peculiar netherworld, a hard to place area that's both reassuringly ancient, and anxiously modern. This is a painter who is interested in the unconscious and the archetypal, and utilizes her own private, (but not inaccessible) vocabulary and imagery." In a submission to AskART, Diana Wilson...

Mixed Media Textile Assemblage Collage Painting on Wood Yanira Collado, Miami

Located in Surfside, FL

Yanira Collado (Dominican, American, 1975 ) "Que Ya Estan En El Olvido" Mixed Media unique fabric and painting assemblage collage on plywood Textile, clothing and found material on a custom-made frame. COA signed by the artist on 11/27/2020. Provenance: Oolite Arts, Miami Beach, where Collado was a resident artist. DIMENSIONS: H: 30" W: 24" As a child, Collado traveled between social structures: from Brooklyn, New York where she was born; to the Dominican Republic; to Miami, where her mother worked to become a tailor. Her use of construction materials summons the perception of a displaced personal and public history. She is a Caribbean African American artist with a Feminist leaning. In her practice, Collado displays an awareness of language conveyed through a keen analysis of identity, the latter referenced in her use of reclaimed literary texts and textiles, simultaneously opposed by various construction materials: wood, concrete, masonry brick, iron, and drywall. Materials with inherent geographic histories, processes, and economies imply varying degrees of personalized and public memory. "My connections are grounded to an alternate imagination: a Caribbean imagination and an alchemic consciousness. The Dominican Republic is a culturally rich country. Our musical narratives, folkloric traditions, oral histories, spiritual and supernatural beliefs are complex and embedded in our everyday life. All these components shaped my perceptions, sensibilities, and life experiences. I am always seeing the world through a Caribbean lens". Her artist residency fellowships include Bridge Red Art Center, North Miami, FL (2013-present), Project Row Houses, Houston, TX (2018), Oolite Arts, Miami Beach, FL (2019 – present), and the Joan Mitchell Foundation residency in New Orleans, LA (2020). She was awarded a South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship in 2021, and Ellie Creator Grant from Oolite in 2019, first place in the 2013 South Florida Biennial at the Art and Cultural Center/Hollywood, FL, and a Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship in 2018. Her work has been featured in group shows around the country including Perez Art Museum, Miami, FL; El Museo del Barrio, New York, NY; PRIZM Art Fair, Miami, FL; Storage Project Space, New York, NY; Oolite Arts, Miami Beach, FL; Project Row Houses, Houston, TX; Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, FL; Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, Florida International University, Miami, FL; The Franklin, Chicago, IL; Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL; and NOVA University, Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Collado’s work was pictured in the Artforum Critic’s Pick, accompanying the review of Fragment, a group exhibition at Emerson Dorsch. In 2016, Collado had a one-person exhibit at the Museum of Art + Design at Miami Dade College, in collaboration with Bridge Red Studios. She had solo exhibitions with Dimensions Variable, Under the Bridge and Far Side Gallery in 2018. In 2019, an interview with her and Onajide Shabaka, mediated by Ryan N. Dennis, was published in BOMB Magazine. Her work is in the collections of Perez Art Museum Miami and El Museo del Barrio. Collado lives and works in North Miami, FL. Matthias Alfen German Sculptor Modern Expressionist Painting Psychogram

By Matthias Alfen

Located in Surfside, FL

Matthias Alfen’s series of Janus figures are an innovation in figural art predicated on the advances made by the Futurist sculptor and painter Umberto Boccioni and the Modernist Alberto Giacometti. The qualities of chance and spontaneity, necessarily excluded in the sculptural work, are clearly evident in his drawings and paintings. “Psychograms” of unchoreographed hand movements display wide variation, repeatedly playing through one form after another. In the end, this multitude of variation serves to enhance the logic, consistency, and seductively rich appearance of Alfen’s designed sculptural works. Represented by Gallery Schuckin in New York, Paris, France, and Moscow, Russia. Matthias Alfen’s was strongly influenced by his family’s experience during World War II. His grandfather Klemens Alfen (1894-1955) was an accomplished painter and photographer, recognized for his landscape photography and for his technique (Special Honors for Excellence in Photo-Print Technology, 1932). He enjoyed the friendship and support of many in the artistic community, a community largely influenced by its German Jewish members. Having lost his entire circle of friends under Nazi oppression. Klemens, although not Jewish, also suffered under the Nazis for refusing to join them and struggling in post-war Germany, which had nothing to offer an artist like him, Klemens took his own life. At around the age of 16 he worked for some weeks as an assistant at his uncle’s art studio. Fritz Koenig...

Entitled "We," this exquisite woodcut by Chinese artist Ren Hui celebrates joy and the beauty of humanity with a crowd of smiling faces. Using a style he calls “uncomplicated and honest,” the artist creates beautiful compositions by carving small notches into a painted wood background. Ren Hui's artworks reflect the artist’s richness of experience - he’s been a soldier, a factory worker, and a photographer documenting life from Nanjing to Tibet. He says, “We have family, friends, ourselves, history, culture, trees, flowers, buildings, demolition—all of which are reflected in my work. This is my life.” Full of bold colors and high-contrast imagery, Ren Hui's modern pointillism...
