Scottish Highland Cattle Bulls Country Landscape Watercolour 1936
Scottish Highland Cattle Bulls Country Landscape Watercolour 1936

Scottish Highland Cattle Bulls Country Landscape Watercolour 1936

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

Title: Scottish Highland Cattle Bulls Country Landscape Watercolour 1936 Artist: L W Rowe, 20th century Medium: watercolour on paper, unframed Size: 7 x 9.75 height x width in inches Signature: signed lower left, L W Rowe Date: dated lower right, 21-10-36 Stamped verso: no stamp visible from the images provided Provenance: private collection Condition: fair to good vintage condition. The sheet shows age toning, foxing, surface marks, handling wear and visible edge wear. There are losses, tears and old adhesive / mount marks to the reverse, particularly around the edges and corners. The painted image remains attractive, clear and highly decorative. Description: A charming signed watercolour by L W Rowe, dated 21-10-36, depicting two Highland cattle standing in a rural landscape. The cattle are shown in profile beneath bare trees, with soft fields, a pale path and distant countryside beyond. Their long horns, shaggy coats and strong silhouettes make them immediately recognisable as Highland cattle, giving the work excellent decorative and collectable appeal. The painting is especially attractive for its earthy palette and gentle pastoral atmosphere. The artist uses warm browns, ochres and deep umber tones to describe the animals’ coats, contrasting them with soft greens, muted greys and pale blue washes in the surrounding landscape. The darker Highland bull to the right gives the composition weight, while the warmer russet animal to the left introduces richness and texture. The handling is loose but observant, with the cattle carefully placed within a quiet countryside setting. The trees and background are painted with light, atmospheric washes, allowing the animals to remain the clear focus of the work. The date of 1936 gives the piece additional period interest, while the signed lower-left inscription helps distinguish it from a purely anonymous animal study. Highland cattle remain a highly popular subject in British and Scottish art, particularly for collectors drawn to rural landscapes, country house interiors, animal paintings, farming scenes and traditional countryside subjects. This watercolour would work especially well in a country home, kitchen, hallway, study, boot room or gallery wall of animal and landscape works. The sheet has visible age-related wear, including toning, foxing, edge losses, tears and old adhesive marks to the reverse, all consistent with a vintage work on paper. Despite this, the painted image remains appealing and decorative. Unframed and ready for sympathetic mounting, this is a characterful 1930s Highland cattle watercolour...

By Max Manning

Located in Los Angeles, CA

Max Manning is a Houston-based painter whose practice he describes as “algorithmic abstraction”, studio-built systems that he deliberately disrupts to create compositions where loosely figurative fragments, patterns, and color fields collide. Working in series, Manning sets up rule-driven visual frameworks such as grids, repeated motifs, cut-outs, and layered shapes, and then interrupts them through shifts in palette, gesture, and scale. The result is a retro-contemporary language: paintings that acknowledge a world shaped by data and screens while insisting on the tactility, stillness, and breath of paint. • One-of-a-kind abstract artwork on paper measuring 20 x 16 inches • Unframed and signed by the artist on the back • Includes certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery • Convenient local Los Angeles delivery available • Affordable Continental U.S. and international shipping available Across his practice, Manning has maintained a clear studio ethos: to “paint through the questions” of life lived alongside algorithms. Instead of reproducing digital aesthetics, he uses rule sets to destabilize them—allowing glitches, misalignments, and pauses to surface. The work’s visual “systems” act less like predictive code and more like open, humanized structures where attention can rest. This stance has resonated with curators and collectors attuned to abstraction’s current arc: grounded in art-historical form, responsive to contemporary cognition, and committed to the slow time of looking. Manning earned a BFA in Two-Dimensional Studies from Bowling Green State University (2011) and an MFA from the University of Cincinnati (2014). His work has been exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad and gained early institutional and critical attention through selection for the 2017 Texas Biennial, curated by Leslie Moody Castro, with press coverage in Texas arts media. Artspace Warehouse has been representing and exhibiting Max Manning's original artworks since 2025. The gallery has been a 1stdibs partner since 2014 with consistently excellent reviews from clients worldwide. The gallery exhibits a large selection of affordable original artworks from established and emerging international artists with diverse backgrounds at high standards. Description: This evocative watercolor by Jack Grunwell captures the Bathampton Toll Bridge, a charming historic landmark nestled along the Kennet and Avon Canal near Bath, England. Bathampton, a picturesque village, is known for its scenic waterways, Georgian heritage, and tranquil rural charm. Grunwell’s use of warm golden hues for the tollhouse and the reflective shimmer of the water creates a sense of nostalgia and serenity. The architecture, with its distinctive red roof and Georgian-style windows, showcases the character of 18th and 19th-century buildings that once served as essential river crossings for travelers and traders. Bathampton is steeped in history, with connections to Jane Austen, the Kennet and Avon Canal, and the grandeur of Bath’s Georgian architecture. This scene perfectly encapsulates the timeless beauty of the English countryside, making it an ideal piece for collectors who appreciate historic British landscapes, waterways, and heritage architecture. Key Features: Historical Significance: Depicts Bathampton’s Toll Bridge and historic tollhouse, an important local landmark.
