Homage to the late great David Bowie. Figurative painting. About the Artist: Le Closier is a Belgian painter living in New York. After moving to Paris in the early 2000's, mixing Pop Art and Street Art, he started painting on the walls of his Montparnasse neighborhood in Paris (famous in the 50's for being the gathering point of writers and painters i.e Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Picasso, Matisse, Cézanne, Modigliani....). A few years later, Le Closier made official portraits for tennis players Serena Williams, Kei Nishikori, Gustavo "Guga" Kuerten, Bryan Brothers, David Goffin, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jeremy Chardy, American golf player Cristie Kerr and Paris-Saint-Germain's president Nasser Al-Khelaifi (among others). ​ In May 2016, he was asked by France Pavilion to paint a portrait of Chief Justice Stephen Breyer for the French/American business week at the French Embassy in Washington, DC. Fresco. 2001, canvas, mixed media, 46x38 cm Ieva Iltnere (b. 1957) entered the Latvian art scene in the early 1980s. Together with other young painters of her generation she attracted much attention and radically changed prevailing conceptions about the Latvian figural painting. The fame of this generation of artists has not diminished since that time. In 1988 Ieva Iltnere took part in the young artists’ exhibition “Post-Traditionalism” at the Central Artists’ House in Moscow as well as in the exhibition “Riga – Lettische Avantgarde” at the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Berlin. It was the first important show of Latvian avant-garde art in Western Europe. In 1990 Ieva Iltnere and her like-minded contemporaries participated in the famous exhibition-action “Gentle Fluctuations” at the Exhibition Hall Latvija in Riga. This exhibition encouraged radical aspirations of the young painters’ group and promoted the adoption of new influences in Latvian art. In 1992 there was Ieva Iltnere and Jānis Mitrēvics’ joint exhibition “Works” and in 1994 – her solo exhibition “School” at the Art Museum Arsenāls. She took part in important Latvian art exhibitions at the Zvolle City Museum (2002), Frauen Museum in Bonn (1992), Grand Salle de l’Aubette in Strasbourg, Maison du Danemark in Paris (1997), Städtische Galerie im Buntentor in Bremen, etc. Ieva Iltnere is one of the most outstanding and creative artists of her generation. Her art is able to communicate great, significant ideas, important to both the individual and the society in general, through intimate subject matter. Iltnere has created a particular imagery that clearly marks her individual style. Her early works deal with themes of family, mother and child, depiction of intimate aspects of life. The artist raised everyday phenomena to the level of sacredness. Today the artist synthesizes traditional means of painting and conceptual approach, inspired by different cultures, Western avant-garde art of the 20th century and Biblical themes (solo exhibition “Stories”, 2002). Iltnere’s paintings feature subdued colouring and discrete intonation. The artist pays particular attention to light and composition. Each work is endowed with a personal touch. Iltnere’s works are found in collections of the Latvian National Museum of Art (previous title - State Museum of Art), the Artists’ Union of Latvia Museum (Riga), the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow), Ludwig Museum (Aachen, Germany), Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum (New Jersey, USA) as well as in private collections in Latvia and abroad. His work included projected DVD installations, Type C prints, and collaborative film projects. Education and career Blake graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a B.F.A. in 1993 and the California Institute of the Arts with an M.F.A. in 1995.[1] Still from Blake's Winchester Redux, a five-minute digital video with sound, continuous loop (2004) His work was selected for the Whitney Biennial in 2000, 2002[2] and 2004.[3] His "Winchester" series, inspired by the story of Sarah Winchester and the Winchester Mystery House, was shown at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2005.[4] He also was selected to participate in the Renaissance Society group exhibition, "All the Pretty Corpses", in 2005.[5] Blake also created the painted abstract interlude sequences for Paul Thomas Anderson's fourth film Punch-Drunk Love, and contributed images and video for Beck's album Sea Change. Blake was also involved in creating and commissioning a soundtrack album called The Forty Million Dollar Beatnik with Neil Landstrumm and Mike Fellows in 2000 on Scandinavia Records and Pork Salad Press to accompany an L.A. drawings/script show by Blake of the same title. His work is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art[6] and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.[4] Personal life Blake was the boyfriend of filmmaker, cultural critic and video game designer Theresa Duncan. In February 2007, the couple moved from Los Angeles to New York City, and resided in the East Village. He was also the son of Anne Schwartz Delibert and the brother of Adrienne Morningstar Delibert.[7] Death On July 10, 2007, Blake found Duncan dead in their apartment, the result of an apparent suicide. On July 17, 2007, Blake was reported missing off New York's Rockaway Beach in Queens. According to press reports, a woman had called 911 to report that she saw a man walking out into the ocean. Blake's clothes and wallet were reportedly found along with a suicide note that referred to Duncan. On July 22, 2007, Blake's body was found by a fisherman in the waters off Sea Girt, New Jersey. Blake's cause of death was presumed to be suicide by drowning.[8] According to statements by acquaintances of the couple that have appeared in published reports (including an article in the January 2008 Vanity Fair), Blake said that he and Duncan were being followed and harassed by Scientologists prior to his disappearance. Blake also included his allegations of harassment by Scientologists and others in a 27-page "chronicle" he prepared for a lawsuit he planned to file.[7] The Law & Order episode "Bogeyman" in season 18 is loosely based on the deaths of Duncan and Blake. In the episode, the body of the character paralleling Theresa Duncan has forensic evidence that calls into question her suicide, while the Jeremy Blake parallel character survives his suicide attempt. A legal case against him is disrupted by the cult group Systemotics, resulting in a near mistrial followed by a plea accepted after the ADA implies both he and the judge are connected to Systemotics.
