ABOUT
Born in 1967, Piussi was raised in Florence where he studied at the Istituto d’arte, majoring in sculpture and painting and completing his artistic education at Milano’s Brera Art Academy. He lives in Florence, pursuing painting, bas-reliefs in terracotta and in bronze, and bronze sculpture.
Piussi presents an ideal, almost childlike world which can be found below everyday events, a step outside the flow of time, yet still a part of contemporary life, with a nod to Alex Katz and David Hockney. The drama, or lack thereof, is played out in simplified, almost abstract spaces. Pure in intent, Piussi’s oeuvre are inspired by the Early Renaissance.
Snapshot images of a world reduced to its essence, the apparently comic-book style has echoes of Giotto, Paolo Uccello, of medieval illuminations. Rather than mimicking the appearance of nature, Piussi reaches for its essence, without distracting details. Women stand on the shore of quintessentially peaceful seas, self-contained, at ease, unwitting replicas of classical goddesses - a proud diver echoes Neptune holding a trident.

Edmund Davenport was a New Yorker and a successful illustrator in the 1920’s. He painted covers for Women’s Home Companion and The Saturday Evening Post, and at the same time, he worked in the art department of Paramount Studios.
At the time of this publication, a young woman’s graduation from college was a rare accomplishment, and the opportunities for employment that required a college diploma, were even rarer. Nevertheless, it was a good reason for this pretty, young woman to be sitting on top of the world in the vicinity of “cloud nine.” “Top of the World” appeared on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post on June 13, 1925.

Stately portrait of Franklin Atwood Park by Arthur Trevethin Nowell (British, 1862-1940). Park is sitting for a classical portrait, wearing a suit with a blue bowtie against a dark background. Of particular note are his glasses and moustache, both rendered with expert detail. Park was the VP and Chairman of the Board for Singer Manufacturing Company and Manager of the Singer Division in Scotland when the portrait was commissioned. John Scott Russell of Scotland (1808-1882) was one of the great marine engineers of the 19th century. In 1858 he launched the Great Eastern, (depicted here in this painting) then the world's largest ship, which would make history by laying the first transatlantic telegraph cable.
He was one of the most distinguished naval architects of the 19th century. He made a study of the nature of waves for which he received widespread acclaim and recognition. He designed and built the wave - the first vessel constructed on the wave system - prior to establishing his own yard on the Thames which produces many steamships, most notably Brunel's ill-fated monster, The Great Eastern, as well as the worlds first successful ironclad warship H.M.S.
