Girl in restaurant in Paris. 19th century, oil on wood, 46x37,5 cm Eduardo Léon Garrido (1856-1949) Eduardo León Garrido was born in Madrid in 1856. He falls within the Group of Spaniards in Paris, as he warns in his style, with clear influences of Impressionism, somewhat reminiscent of Manet. He was the eldest son of Luis Garrido Fernandez, an official at the Ministry of Finance. His father would have liked him to embrace an administrative career but Eduardo León moved towards the artistic career. Trained in the Escuela Superior de Madrid, he painted his first work « the theft of the Sabine women », at only eighteen years old. Then he entered the Studio of Vicente Palmaroli (1834-1896). He will always consider the latter as his true teacher. In 1875, at the age of 19, he arrived in Paris to continue his studies with a scholarship from the city of Madrid. The same year he exhibited for the first time at the Salon where he presented a « Saint Jerome ». Very quickly he appears to be noticed by the famous merchant of the Rue Chaptal, Adolphe Goupil, for who he worked a few years. Notice that Vincent van Gogh worked for Goupil & Cie from 1869 till 1876 (his brother Theo entered in 1873. From 1876 on Garrido exhibits portraits and stylish, contemporary scenes. Catalogues indicates that he changed his dealer for the gallery Borniche around 1880. During the years 1882-1894 he did not expose anymore at the Salon (except once, in 1887, with the portrait of his friend, the painter Bréauté) . However, he painted a lot to feed the gallery of his dealer and a few galleries in Madrid. During that period he had also some student : Anne Blanche Dillaye (1851-1931), the american painter, studied with him from 1885 till 1887. From 1892 onwards it is the merchant Félix Gérard (one of the first dealers of work by Manet and Courbet), of the Rue Lafitte, which concludes with him an exclusive contract. He probably imposed to the artist to paint a different style. This sealed a radical departure from his 1880-1890 period, during which he painted the streets of Paris, café terraces, newspaper kiosks, and was likened to very fashionable Belle-Époque artists. From 1892 onwards, Garrido painted almost solely gallant scenes in the 18th century style, in keeping with current tastes and clients’ demands. Meanwhile, Garrido left Paris. In 1888 he established a studio on the banks of the Marne at La Varenne-Saint-Hilaire (Val-de-Marne near Paris). He married there in 1892 one of its models, Leonie Beck, and in 1893 their first child, Louis- Edouard, was born. He is quickly integrated into local life and became an art teacher in the Philotechnic Association of La Varenne. From 1895 onwards he presented new works at the Salon des Artistes Français and in 1914, he obtained the French citizenship, while two of his son went into battle (World War I). He continued painting, mainly landscapes, portraits of family members (children, granddaughter Odile born in 1923) and flowers. At the end of his life and because of poor eyesight he painted exclusively flower bouquets. In 1939, Eduardo León and his wife Leonie arrive at Caen. They settled with their son, Louis- Edouard, who resided there. Eduardo Leon Garrido died there in 1949. He is buried in the family burial at the cemetery Venoix in Caen. Some of his paintings can be seen in the Museo del Prado (Madrid), the Museo Carmen Thyssen (Málaga), the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Argentina), Bilbao Fine Arts Museum and private collections such as the Bellver Collection in Sevilla. Adriana Verelst Portrait of Lady Lempster 1683-1769 Oil on canvas, unsigned Image size: 49 ½ x 40 ⅓ inches Contemporary-style gilt frame The sitter is identified as Lady Sophia Osborne, Baroness Lempster (Leominster) (1661 - 1746), the daughter of Thomas Osborne, First Duke of Leeds, and Lady Bridget Bertie. Her first marriage was to Donogh O’Brien, Lord Ibracken in 1679, who passed away in 1682. She then married William Fermor, First Baron Leominster, in 1691, gaining her the title Baroness Leominster. She and William had five children, including Thomas Fermor, First Earl of Pomfret. The portrait is dated 1685, indicating that this identification was added after the creation of the portrait. During the early 18th century a highly romanticised view of country life reached its peak. Many members of the nobility, particularly women, chose to have their portraits painted in shepherdess costume, a break from the conventional norms of formal portraiture. This style developed from 17th century Roman pastoral landscapes by artists like Claude Lorrain and Dutch three-quarter length portraits of shepherds and shepherdesses. These works aimed to evoke themes of Arcadia, poetic escape and landed virtue, with their subjects depicted wearing fashionable and expensive clothing, inconsistent with actual farm work. A knowledge of Latin and Greek pastoral poetry signified education and refinement, desirable qualities for a woman to possess. Life in the country was perceived as peaceful, contemplative and free of hardships, and to be painted in this pastoral style was to create a tangible expression of power and wealth, creating tension between the aristocratic fantasy and the reality of rural life. Lady Lempster has opted for such a depiction. She is shown seated, wearing a white silk gown, head tilted slightly to one side and with a shepherd’s crook and wicker hat adorned with flowers in her lap. She sits on a bench, in front of a large tree, an expansive view visible on the right behind her. So ingrained was this style that the crook and hat alone would be enough to suggest Arcadia to the viewer. There is an interesting contrast between the female sitter and the woman artist who painted her. The shepherdess costume was used predominantly in portraits of women sitters, with the aim of expressing virtues such as purity and appropriate education rather than a distinct, individual personality. Portraits of men however, depicted sitters in settings, costume and surrounded by objects that signified their profession and accomplishments. Adriana Verelst was a woman with a career of her own, able to support herself and defying expectations of the time, the conformity of Lady Lempster’s portrait emphasising Verelst’s own unconformity. Adriana Verelst Adriana Verelst (c. 1683–1769) was an English portrait artist, and daughter of the portrait painter Herman Verelst. Her exact date and place of birth are unknown, though her parents were from Vienna. Verelst is a prime example of how women artists were often misrepresented or even erased from the cannon of art history. There have been questions surrounding her biography with the view that her sister, Maria Verelst and fellow portrait artist, did not exist and could be Adriana Verelst herself. Contemporary evidence of Adriana’s birth, marriage, career and death exist, however, she has not been included in later art histories. In contrast, there is no contemporary documentary evidence for the existence of Maria Verelst, though she is named in later publications. The name Maria Verelst first appeared in Matthew Bryan’s Dictionary of 1816 and it has been argued that his use of the name was a misinterpretation of ‘M’ being an abbreviation for Maria rather than ‘Mademoiselle’. The date of birth and location in Antwerp was given by J.B. Descamps in 1753, though there is no archival evidence of a birth or baptism for Maria in Antwerp at this time. In 1762, Horace Walpole made the link between Maria and Herman Verelst, an Anglo-Dutch painter, as the father of the artist. As Herman had fled from the siege of Vienna in 1683, biographers resonated that with a birth date of 1680, Maria must have been born in Vienna. Biographers also stated that Maria was trained by her uncle, Simon Verelst, a renown painter of flowers and still lifes. The first reference to 1744 as the date of Maria’s death was in 1859 in Mrs. Ellet’s Women Artists in all Ages and Countries, though no source is given for this date. It has been argued that Maria Verelst is in fact Adriana, claiming that earlier biographies used ‘M. Verelst’ as Mademoiselle in reference to Mademoiselle Adriana Verelst. Frame size 42.5 inches x 34.8 inches ( 108cm x 88.5cm ). Available for sale; this original oil painting is by the German artist Albin Mattenheimer and is dated 1875. The painting is presented and supplied in its original period frame (which is shown in these photographs). The frame has benefitted from cleaning, restoration and reinforcement, which was performed on our instruction, supervision and approval. The canvas and the painted surface have been professionally restored whilst in previous ownership, probably within the last 20 years. This includes a couple of repairs to perforations in the canvas which are of good material integrity. This antique painting is in good condition. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The painting is signed and dated 1875 lower left. Albin Mattenheimer (1823–1875) was a German painter associated with the artistic traditions of Bavaria during the nineteenth century. Born in Bamberg in 1823, he belonged to the distinguished Mattenheimer family of artists, several generations of whom worked as painters, restorers, and teachers in southern Germany. The family had established a notable artistic reputation from the eighteenth century onwards, particularly through Andreas Theodor Mattenheimer and his descendants, who were active in Bamberg, Munich, and other Bavarian cultural centres. Mattenheimer studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, one of the most important artistic institutions in Germany during the nineteenth century. He subsequently worked in Munich and is generally regarded as a landscape painter. His surviving recorded works include views of Nuremberg and other Bavarian subjects, reflecting the enduring popularity of topographical and landscape painting in the period. He is often associated with the circle of painters known as the Chiemseemaler, artists inspired by the scenery of the Chiemsee region of Upper Bavaria. Like many German painters of his generation, Mattenheimer worked during a period when Romanticism was gradually giving way to a more naturalistic approach to landscape and genre painting. His works demonstrate an appreciation of atmosphere, place, and the character of the Bavarian countryside. Although comparatively little is known about his career today, Mattenheimer’s paintings occasionally appear on the art market and are represented in specialist reference works on nineteenth-century German art. His relative obscurity has meant that much of his oeuvre remains under-researched, and works by the artist are consequently of particular interest to collectors of German and Central European painting.
