The painting is about a brand of popular portable audio players manufactured and marketed by Sony since 1979. The original Walkman was a portable cassette player and its popularity made "Walkman" an unofficial term for personal stereos of any producer or brand.
By 2010, when production stopped, Sony had built about 200 million cassette-based Walkmans. The Walkman brand was extended to serve most of Sony's portable audio devices, including DAT players, MiniDisc players/recorders, CD players (originally Discman then renamed the CD Walkman), transistor radios, mobile phones, and digital audio/media players.

Biography
Coreen Mary Spellman (1905 - 1978)
Coreen Mary Spellman was a fine-art
teacher as well as a painter, designer, illustrator, lithographer and
muralist. Many of her paintings depicted human-made structures and
industrial landscapes in a style combining realism, precisionism and
abstraction. Often the central subject such as in "Railroad Signal" was
the only suggestion of humanity against a backdrop of stark Texas
landscape.
Of her painting these isolated subjects she said: "I
enjoy taking some rather obscure or unimportant subject or theme and
making something fine and important out of it . . . It always gives me
great pleasure to discover something which has been passed over as being
inadequate material". (Trenton 199)
Spellman was born in Forney,
Texas in 1905. At an early age she moved to Dallas, Texas and studied
under Vivian Aunspaugh before attending the College of Industrial Arts
(Texas Woman's University). She received a Master of Arts degree from
Columbia University and a Masters Degree from the University of Iowa,
Iowa City in 1942.
In addition, Spellman received a Carnegie
Scholarship for study at Harvard University, followed by studies with
Kenneth Hayes Miller, Vaclav Vytlacil, and Charles Wheeler...

When she wasn’t walking the runway, she spent endless hours in the great museums of the world, closely observing and studying the works of the Old Masters. “My time abroad, particularly in Paris, opened my eyes to the vast beauty and power of a great painting. After that I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to the pursuit of Fine Art” said Birkenruth. After returning to the States, Kelly studied at Otis College of Art in Los Angeles, CA. She then continued her studies through workshops and private study with renowned artists such as Daniel Sprick, Steven Assael and Jesus Emmanuel Villarreal.

Raised in an artistically rich atmosphere, Tom Darro has spent his entire life in the world of the arts. His father, Peter Darro, is a renowned painter and sculptor. His mother, Ann Darro, was an opera singer with the Chicago Civic Opera. In addition, three of Tom's uncles served as art directors for various organizations.
Born in Chicago, Tom opted not to take an offered scholarship to the Chicago Art Institute and instead headed for New York City. While there, he began his education in the intricacies of the art world. Later, Tom took the opportunity to move to Los Angeles to concentrate on his art studies. For over two years he took private lessons from European trained painter Theodore Lukits at his studio and workshop. He then studied color theory under artist Christian Title...
