American photographer Julius Shulman’s images of Californian architecture have burned themselves into the retina of the 20th century. A book on modern architecture without Shulman is inconceivable. Some of his architectural photographs, like the iconic shots of Frank Lloyd Wright’s or Pierre Koenig’s remarkable structures, have been published countless times. I met this young married Samburu in the middle of a busy market in western Kenya. She was with a group of young women browsing the wooden stalls dotted across the dusty red earth in the lowlands of the Matthew’s Range. In Samburu communities young men spend years as warriors – a wandering lifestyle which make it impossible for them to marry. Instead they take girlfriends and give them beads and necklaces to indicate their relationship.

As an artist, He is fascinated by the opulence and richness of still life of the golden age of Dutch painting in the 17th c. These works, of course, symbolize mortality and the temporal nature of material goods. In his still life, He built these images with the same symbolic references but with the best quality, you can get. By playing with light and dark, He captures the beauty of every flower and each object down to the smallest detail. In addition to photography, he uses high-resolution scans to achieve extreme detail. He use photography as a base, but in the end, he arrive at an image that nobody could actually shoot as a photograph.He is not a photographer in the traditional sense, but he does take many pictures and he needs a lot of layers. In his still life of flowers and objects, he creates a balance between objects and living materials with light and shadow and the best quality. He created the photographic illusion of a painting from the golden age in a new tech way by scanning every object individually and combining these with photographs that he took. The construction takes a lot of time and months of post-production. In his work, everything has to be perfect. It’s like a movie. The light and color have to be right. (It is quite obsessive work.) He loves the idea of “the impossible image” – the idea of there being no limits and of using the photograph as the basis for an image that’s in his head.

Baobabs are one of Africa’s natural wonders: they can live more than 2,500 years, and their massive, water-storing trunks can grow to more than one hundred feet in circumference. They also serve as a renewable source of food, fiber, and fuel, as well as a focus of spiritual life. But now, suddenly, the largest baobabs are dying off , literally collapsing under their own weight. Scientists believe these ancient giants are being dehydrated by drought and higher temperatures, likely the result of climate change.
Photographer Beth Moon, already responsible for some of the most indelible images of Africa’s oldest and largest baobabs, has undertaken a new photographic pilgrimage to bear witness to this environmental catastrophe and document the baobabs that still survive. In this oversize volume, she presents breathtaking new duotone tree portraits of the baobabs of Madagascar, Senegal, and South Africa. She also recounts her eventful journey to visit these fantastic trees in a moving diaristic text studded with color travel photos.
