Pop Art Abstract Prints

POP ART STYLE

Perhaps one of the most influential contemporary art movements, Pop art emerged in the 1950s. In stark contrast to traditional artistic practice, its practitioners drew on imagery from popular culture — comic books, advertising, product packaging and other commercial media — to create original Pop art paintings, prints and sculptures that celebrated ordinary life in the most literal way.

ORIGINS OF POP ART

CHARACTERISTICS OF POP ART

  • Bold imagery
  • Bright, vivid colors
  • Straightforward concepts
  • Engagement with popular culture
  • Incorporation of everyday objects from advertisements, cartoons, comic books and other popular mass media

POP ARTISTS TO KNOW

ORIGINAL POP ART ON 1STDIBS

The Pop art movement started in the United Kingdom as a reaction, both positive and critical, to the period’s consumerism. Its goal was to put popular culture on the same level as so-called high culture.

Richard Hamilton’s 1956 collage Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing? is widely believed to have kickstarted this unconventional new style.

Pop art works are distinguished by their bold imagery, bright colors and seemingly commonplace subject matter. Practitioners sought to challenge the status quo, breaking with the perceived elitism of the previously dominant Abstract Expressionism and making statements about current events. Other key characteristics of Pop art include appropriation of imagery and techniques from popular and commercial culture; use of different media and formats; repetition in imagery and iconography; incorporation of mundane objects from advertisements, cartoons and other popular media; hard edges; and ironic and witty treatment of subject matter.

Although British artists launched the movement, they were soon overshadowed by their American counterparts. Pop art is perhaps most closely identified with American Pop artist Andy Warhol, whose clever appropriation of motifs and images helped to transform the artistic style into a lifestyle. Most of the best-known American artists associated with Pop art started in commercial art (Warhol made whimsical drawings as a hobby during his early years as a commercial illustrator), a background that helped them in merging high and popular culture.

Roy Lichtenstein was another prominent Pop artist that was active in the United States. Much like Warhol, Lichtenstein drew his subjects from print media, particularly comic strips, producing paintings and sculptures characterized by primary colors, bold outlines and halftone dots, elements appropriated from commercial printing. Recontextualizing a lowbrow image by importing it into a fine-art context was a trademark of his style. Neo-Pop artists like Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami further blurred the line between art and popular culture.

Pop art rose to prominence largely through the work of a handful of men creating works that were unemotional and distanced — in other words, stereotypically masculine. However, there were many important female Pop artists, such as Rosalyn Drexler, whose significant contributions to the movement are recognized today. Best known for her work as a playwright and novelist, Drexler also created paintings and collages embodying Pop art themes and stylistic features.

"Signs of the Times" LIFE / QUESTION MARK 40x40" on Canvas
Located in Southampton, NY
The paintings of Robin Morris are her observations of life, stylized, playful, and yet challenging to the viewer. Her emotions are hidden beneath layers of color and pattern. Stepping into the public eye in 1982, with the publication of her first lithograph, "The Couple". The fifty editions that followed, firmly established her in the artistic community and enhanced her broad-based collector appeal. This print on canvas is a particularly rare image. It is numbered 11 of 295 images, but only 3 were ever created of this 40x40" image on canvas. One print went to the artist Robin Morris, One went to us at ARDT gallery...

Located in Culver City, CA
"He is the Child of a mountain of a Man" Print 40×50 in Ed. 1/10 by Kate Garner Signed and numbered by the artist. Not framed. Ships in a tube. Kate Garner is an English photographer, fine artist, and singer. Garner has photographed a wide range of musicians and celebrities, including Dr. Dre, Leigh Bowery, JT LeRoy, Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, David Bowie, Cameron Diaz, PJ Harvey, John Galliano, Björk, and Kate Moss. Her work has appeared in the American and British versions of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar as well as W magazine, Interview, GQ, Vanity Fair, Elle, and The Sunday Times. Kate Garner was expelled from high school at the age of 16 and became a runaway who joined The Children Of God. To escape the grasp of the cult she hitchhiked from London through Eastern Europe to India in 1970, where she lived for a year as a traveler before being located by her parents. She attended art school at Blackpool in the North of England and later moved to London, where she began to both photograph and model for up-and-coming magazines such as The Face and i-D. Kate Garner first came widely into the public eye as one-third of the 1980s avant-garde, new wave pop project Haysi Fantayzee, along with other members Jeremy Healy and Paul Caplin. Emanating from street art scenes such as the Blitz Kids that were cropping up in London in the early 1980s, Haysi’s music combined reggae, country, and electro with political and sociological lyrics couched as nursery rhymes. Catapulted to stardom by their visual sensibilities, Haysi Fantayzee combined their extreme clothes sense – described as combining white Rasta, tribal chieftain, and Dickensian styles – with a quirky musical sound comparable to other new wave musical pop acts of the era, such as Bow Wow Wow...

They appeared several times on the BBC Television program Top of the Pops. Pop Style- Limited Edition Abstract Prints - Spring Rosy Clouds #10
Located in Beijing, CN
Pop Style- Limited Edition Abstract Prints - Spring Rosy Clouds #10 The piece is signed and numbered, limited edition of 99 A.P About Spring Rosy Clouds The highly conceptual series has drawn materials from the rocks of Chinese Gardens. Garden rocks, viewed as mountains -the larger world of nature in microcosm, often supplanted actual scenery as sources of inspiration for images of landscape. Whether it’s garden design or Chinese landscape painting, one of the most important considerations is the harmonious arrangement of elements expressing different aspects of yin( metaphor of feminity) and yang(metaphor of masculinity). In this series, the artist uses digital techniques to combine the image of flower (feminity) and rocks (masculinity), expressing the vitality of life. Behind the simple lines lie an outstanding creating ability of lines that have long set the artist apart. The pink color, along with the implied meaning of Spring in the title of work suggests implicitly the repressed sexual concept in East, revealing in a moderate tone the artist’s insight about contemporary Chinese culture. Charles Pachter is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting and patriotic images have independently earned their place in the nation's museums. For the uninitiated, his work is accessible and beloved (notably his amazing hockey mural at Toronto's College Street subway station). While Pachter’s work shares some characteristics with Jim Dine, David Hockney and even Andy Warhol, his style is resoundingly charming, singular and uniquely Canadian. Pop Style- Limited Edition Abstract Prints - Spring Rosy Clouds #11
Located in Beijing, CN
Pop Style- Limited Edition Abstract Prints - Spring Rosy Clouds #11 The piece is signed and numbered, limited edition of 99 A.P About Spring Rosy Clouds The highly conceptual series has drawn materials from the rocks of Chinese Gardens. Garden rocks, viewed as mountains -the larger world of nature in microcosm, often supplanted actual scenery as sources of inspiration for images of landscape.
