Pop Art Abstract Prints

POP ART STYLE

Perhaps one of the most influential contemporary art movements, Pop art emerged in the 1950s. In stark contrast to traditional artistic practice, its practitioners drew on imagery from popular culture — comic books, advertising, product packaging and other commercial media — to create original Pop art paintings, prints and sculptures that celebrated ordinary life in the most literal way.

ORIGINS OF POP ART

CHARACTERISTICS OF POP ART

  • Bold imagery
  • Bright, vivid colors
  • Straightforward concepts
  • Engagement with popular culture
  • Incorporation of everyday objects from advertisements, cartoons, comic books and other popular mass media

POP ARTISTS TO KNOW

ORIGINAL POP ART ON 1STDIBS

The Pop art movement started in the United Kingdom as a reaction, both positive and critical, to the period’s consumerism. Its goal was to put popular culture on the same level as so-called high culture.

Richard Hamilton’s 1956 collage Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing? is widely believed to have kickstarted this unconventional new style.

Pop art works are distinguished by their bold imagery, bright colors and seemingly commonplace subject matter. Practitioners sought to challenge the status quo, breaking with the perceived elitism of the previously dominant Abstract Expressionism and making statements about current events. Other key characteristics of Pop art include appropriation of imagery and techniques from popular and commercial culture; use of different media and formats; repetition in imagery and iconography; incorporation of mundane objects from advertisements, cartoons and other popular media; hard edges; and ironic and witty treatment of subject matter.

Although British artists launched the movement, they were soon overshadowed by their American counterparts. Pop art is perhaps most closely identified with American Pop artist Andy Warhol, whose clever appropriation of motifs and images helped to transform the artistic style into a lifestyle. Most of the best-known American artists associated with Pop art started in commercial art (Warhol made whimsical drawings as a hobby during his early years as a commercial illustrator), a background that helped them in merging high and popular culture.

Roy Lichtenstein was another prominent Pop artist that was active in the United States. Much like Warhol, Lichtenstein drew his subjects from print media, particularly comic strips, producing paintings and sculptures characterized by primary colors, bold outlines and halftone dots, elements appropriated from commercial printing. Recontextualizing a lowbrow image by importing it into a fine-art context was a trademark of his style. Neo-Pop artists like Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami further blurred the line between art and popular culture.

Pop art rose to prominence largely through the work of a handful of men creating works that were unemotional and distanced — in other words, stereotypically masculine. However, there were many important female Pop artists, such as Rosalyn Drexler, whose significant contributions to the movement are recognized today. Best known for her work as a playwright and novelist, Drexler also created paintings and collages embodying Pop art themes and stylistic features.

Charles Pachter is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting and patriotic images have independently earned their place in the nation's museums. For the uninitiated, his work is accessible and beloved (notably his amazing hockey mural at Toronto's College Street subway station). While Pachter’s work shares some characteristics with Jim Dine, David Hockney and even Andy Warhol, his style is resoundingly charming, singular and uniquely Canadian. Located in NEW YORK, NY
Raymond Pettibon Black Flag 1980: Rare early Raymond Pettibon Black Flag punk flyer designed by Pettibon for a gig by Black Flag, Mommy Men, the Circle Jerks, Stains, and Descendents at the Hideaway; Sept. 19, 1980; striking, highly collectible early Raymond Pettibon punk art. Off-set lithograph. 8.5 x 11 inches Very good overall vintage condition. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Rare. Further Background: Before Pettibon gained international recognition in the mid-80s for his skillful marriage of text and drawing, he was an important figure in the Los Angeles alternative scene. Working inside the punk movement, Pettibon’s art from this early period encapsulates the irreverence, intensity, and heightened self-awareness of youth, and chronicles the development of his characteristic violently shadowed and coarse aesthetic. (Source: MOCA, Tuscon). Raymond Pettibon popularized the American punk aesthetic with his designs that captured the riotous and chaotic character of punk such as this rare Black Flag flyer...

La Grande Occassione Della Pittura Americana Milano (Hand Signed by Jim Dine)

La Grande Occassione Della Pittura Americana Milano (Hand Signed by Jim Dine), 1963 Offset Lithograph invitation poster (hand signed by Jim Dine) Hand signed by Jim Dine on the front -signed in person for the present owner, so provenance is direct. 12 1/4 × 16 3/4 inches Unframed Uniquely signed. The gallery acquired this historic 1963 invitation and then Jim Dine graciously signed it years later in black marker - as he was/is the only artist of the entire group who was still alive. We know of no other one in the entire world with any hand signature by any of the artists exhibited. This very rare invitation/poster was published on the occasion of this important 1963 exhibition of American painting at the Galleria Ariete, Mostra n. 94, in Milan, Italy. The roster of artists represented is literally a Who's Who of American Abstract Expressionists of the era. The Galleria dell'Ariete in Milan, Italy, opened in 1955, and ran an active exhibition until its closing in the mid-1980s. It was among the most important galleries in Italy for contemporary art, and had extensive connections with dealers, collectors, artists, and critics in Europe, the United States, and Japan. Beatrice Monti della Corte opened the Galleria dell'Ariete at Via San Andrea, 5, Milan, Italy in 1955, when she was twenty-five years old, principally as a showplace for modern art; Galleria dell'Ariete rapidly became one of the foremost Italian galleries...

Gal Chews Same Gum Since 1965 offset lithograph, Hand signed by Ed Ruscha RARE!
Located in New York, NY
Ed Ruscha Paintings (Hand signed by Ed Ruscha), 2014 Offset lithograph print (Hand signed on the front) Published by Gagosian Gallery, Rome 26 × 27 inches Unframed Highly collectible when hand signed by Ed Ruscha Provenance: Donated by the artist to a major arts charity Acquired by the present owner from the above Accompanied by original documentation sheet from the charity as provenance This poster featuring Gal Chews Same Gum Since 1963 (2014) was produced in 2014, in conjunction with Ed Ruscha: Paintings at Gagosian, Rome. The exhibition included recent paintings in which the artist continues to meditate on the melancholy of the Psycho Spaghetti Westerns in complex pictures that conflate his signature elements with the visual devices, perspectival techniques, and refined atmospheres of old master paintings to depict the romantic road trip of youth reduced to roadside dystopia. Provenance: donated by Ed Ruscha to a major charitable arts organization. About Ed Ruscha: There are things that I’m constantly looking at that I feel should be elevated to greater status, almost to philosophical status or to a religious status. That’s why taking things out of context is a useful tool to an artist. It’s the concept of taking something that’s not subject matter and making it subject matter. —Ed Ruscha At the start of his artistic career, Ed Ruscha called himself an “abstract artist ... who deals with subject matter.” Abandoning academic connotations that came to be associated with Abstract Expressionism, he looked instead to tropes of advertising and brought words—as form, symbol, and material—to the forefront of painting. Working in diverse media with humor and wit, he oscillates between sign and substance, locating the sublime in landscapes both natural and artificial. In 1956, Ruscha moved from Oklahoma City to Los Angeles, where he attended the Chouinard Art Institute. During his time in art school, he had been painting in the manner of Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning, and came across a reproduction of Jasper Johns’s Target...
