1981

About the Item

Raymond Pettibon Black Flag, 1981: Rare early Raymond Pettibon Black Flag Punk Flyer - illustrated by Pettibon on the occasion of: Black Flag, Stains, Youth Gone Mad, Caustic Cause, Fear at Devonshire Downs, Sep 11, 1981. An exceptionally rare, well-preserved, post-marked example that is not to be passed upon. Off-set printed punk flyer. 8.5 x 11 inches. Condition: Minor wear commensurate with age & medium; otherwise very good overall vintage condition; stamped and addressed on the reverse. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Further Background: Before Pettibon gained international recognition in the mid-80s for his skillful marriage of text and drawing, he was an important figure in the Los Angeles alternative scene. Working inside the punk movement, Pettibon’s art from this early period encapsulates the irreverence, intensity, and heightened self-awareness of youth, and chronicles the development of his characteristic violently shadowed and coarse aesthetic. (Source: MOCA, Tuscon). Raymond Pettibon popularized the American punk aesthetic with his designs that captured the riotous and chaotic character of punk such as this rare Black Flag flyer. In your face and rebellious, Black Flag defined American punk with their destructive energy and spontaneity evoked here in the black and white designs, making the portraits reverberate both visually & contextually. • Raymond Pettibon Andrew Pope Inside Outside Baseball (Raymond Pettibon baseball)
    By Raymond Pettibon
    Located in NEW YORK, NY
Raymond Pettibon, Andrew Pope: Inside Outside Baseball: A rare 2014 limited edition, hand-signed zine created by Raymond Pettibon & Andrew Pope to benefit New York's Printed Matter Inc. This scarce work quickly sold out upon its release. Medium: Offset printed staple-bound artist zine. 25 pages. Dimensions: 11 x 8.5 in (27.94 x 21.59 cm) Hand signed by both artists & numbered from an edition of 100 on the mid upper right. Excellent overall condition. Raymond Pettibon is a contemporary American artist known for his stylized ink drawings combining images and text. His inventive narratives blend historical content with consumer culture to yield incisive critiques of contemporary society. “I was making my work as transparent as possible, without equivocations, without calling attention to itself, without apology,” he explained. “There's a lot of conventions in the art world that are not to be transgressed, but my economy of means doesn't abide by those strictures.” Born Raymond Ginn on June 16, 1957 in Tucson, AZ, the artist is self-taught, but cites drawings by William Blake, Edward Hopper, Francisco Goya, and John Sloan as instructive to his practice. Deriving inspiration from comics, cartoons, and other pop culture iconography, Pettibon began designing album covers and ephemera for his brother’s band Black Flag in the mid-1970s. He went on to produce cover art for Sonic Youth, the Minutemen, and the Foo Fighters. In 2017, the artist was the subject of the major retrospective “Raymond Pettibon: A Pen of All Work,” held at the New Museum in New York, where he currently lives and works. Today, his works can be found in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Tate Gallery in London, among others.
