Claes Oldenburg
One of the original Pop artists, Claes Oldenburg was born in Stockholm. The son of a Swedish diplomat, he spent his early years in Stockholm and Oslo until the family moved to Chicago in 1937.
Oldenburg attended Yale University, then returned to Chicago, where he worked for a newspaper and also attended drawing classes at the Art Institute. He moved to New York in 1956.
Oldenburg’s early art in New York were works of urban realism in cardboard and paper that were influenced by the work of Dubuffet and the New Realists, and were seen as a brutal response to society. In 1961 Oldenburg rented a storefront on the Lower East Side and sold brightly painted plaster objects as well as three-dimensional and wall reliefs based on hamburgers, pastries, men's and women's clothing, and other commodities. The signature soft sculptures followed, objects of commonplace household objects made of vinyl or canvas stuffed with kapok. These pieces transformed the medium — the soft sculptures are intended to be sensual experiences and commentary on our material world of objects and our relationship to them.
In 1965, still working in vinyl, plaster and cardboard, Oldenburg began making large works termed “Colossal Monuments,” which are large public sculptures with public and private meanings. In the 1970s, Oldenburg was fabricating large-scale works in durable materials such as steel, and working with Coosje van Bruggen, he had received many such public commissions in the United States and Europe.

- Expressive Painting After Picasso catalog 1983 (Basquiat cover)By after Jean-Michel BasquiatLocated in NEW YORK, NYBasquiat Cover Art 1983: Rare early 1980s exhibition catalogue published on the occasion of: “Expressive Painting After Picasso”- a group featuring works by: Pablo Picasso, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francis Bacon, Georg Baselitz, Joan Miro & more at the Beyeler Gallery, Basel Switzerland. Medium: Exhibition catalog 1983; softcover, 48 pages. Dimensions: 10 x 11.5 Inches Very good overall vintage condition. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Jean-Michel Basquiat’s dramatic life and iconic paintings—which variously feature obsessive scribbling, enigmatic symbols and diagrams, and iconography including skulls, masks, and the artist’s trademark crown—make him one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. The self-taught painter embraced graffiti before committing to a studio practice. He found a mentor and friend in Andy Warhol, who helped the young artist navigate the 1980s New York art world. Across his oeuvre, Basquiat drew on his own Caribbean heritage; a convergence of African American, African, and Aztec cultural histories; classical themes; and pop cultural figures including athletes and musicians. The immediacy and intellectual depth of his paintings won him widespread acclaim both before and after his untimely death at the age of 27. Basquiat’s paintings now belong in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others. In 2017, Basquiat’s Untitled (1982) notched $110.5 million at auction and became the most expensive artwork by an American artist to ever be sold. Related Categories: Basquiat ephemera. - 10 Statues of Liberty, ParisBy Andy WarholLocated in New York, NYAndy Warhol 10 Statues of Liberty, Paris, 1986 Offset Lithograph 38 3/4 × 27 inches Edition of 500 Published by: Galerie Lavignes-Bastille, Paris Unframed This oversized vintage Warhol exhibition poster was published on the occasion of the exhibition "Andy Warhol: 10 Statues of Liberty" at Galerie Lavignes-Bastille, Paris, 8 April - 30 May, 1986. The print was published in an edition of fewer than 500, and is considered especially collectible as it was a lifetime edition for an exhibition that Warhol attended. It was printed in 1986, the year before Warhol died. Warhol's renditions of the Statue of Liberty have been the inspiration in both subject matter and style of many subsequent generations of Pop artists, including Peter Max's ubiquitous Statues of Liberty. Warhol reprised his successful 1960s series based on Lady Liberty, with 10 of the large-scaled Camouflage Statue of Liberty paintings based on a close-up enlargement of the figure’s head. These later Liberty works commemorated the 100th anniversary of the gift of the statue from France to America, according to Warhol biographer Victor Bockris. Warhol traveled to Paris in March that same year for the debut of this body of work at Galerie Lavignes-Bastille. The show was initially an uncharacteristic and inexplicable failure. “It was a great show,” recalled the dealer Patrice...Category
