Patti Smith (American, b.1946) is a singer-songwriter, poet, and visual artist, known for her role in the punk rock movement of the 1970s. Born in Chicago, and raised in South Jersey, she studied at Glassboro State Teachers College, before moving to New York City in 1967. There, she met and befriended Robert Mapplethorpe, with whom she maintained a close friendship and artistic partnership until his death.
Throughout the 1970s, Smith developed a reputation as a poet and performance artist. In 1975, she released her debut album, Horses, which would go on to become one of the most influential and critically successful albums of all time.
In 1979, and continuing into the 1980s, Smith largely disappeared from the public scene, moving to Detroit with her husband, MC5 guitarist, Fred “Sonic” Smith, and devoting herself to domestic life.
Following her husband’s death in 1994, Smith returned to the music and art scene, beginning with her successful comeback album, Gone Again.
She has also been featured a number of art exhibitions, including Strange Messenger at the Andy Warhol Museum in 2002, and Rockaway!, hosted by MoMA PS1 in 2014. In addition, Smith was named a Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture in 2005, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

- Raymond Pettibon Andrew Pope Inside Outside Baseball (Raymond Pettibon baseball)By Raymond PettibonLocated in NEW YORK, NYRaymond Pettibon, Andrew Pope: Inside Outside Baseball: A rare 2014 limited edition, hand-signed zine created by Raymond Pettibon & Andrew Pope to benefit New York's Printed Matter Inc. This scarce work quickly sold out upon its release. Medium: Offset printed staple-bound artist zine. 25 pages. Dimensions: 11 x 8.5 in (27.94 x 21.59 cm) Hand signed by both artists & numbered from an edition of 100 on the mid upper right. Excellent overall condition. Raymond Pettibon is a contemporary American artist known for his stylized ink drawings combining images and text. His inventive narratives blend historical content with consumer culture to yield incisive critiques of contemporary society. “I was making my work as transparent as possible, without equivocations, without calling attention to itself, without apology,” he explained. “There's a lot of conventions in the art world that are not to be transgressed, but my economy of means doesn't abide by those strictures.” Born Raymond Ginn on June 16, 1957 in Tucson, AZ, the artist is self-taught, but cites drawings by William Blake, Edward Hopper, Francisco Goya, and John Sloan as instructive to his practice. Deriving inspiration from comics, cartoons, and other pop culture iconography, Pettibon began designing album covers and ephemera for his brother’s band Black Flag in the mid-1970s. He went on to produce cover art for Sonic Youth, the Minutemen, and the Foo Fighters. In 2017, the artist was the subject of the major retrospective “Raymond Pettibon: A Pen of All Work,” held at the New Museum in New York, where he currently lives and works. Today, his works can be found in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Tate Gallery in London, among others. - Expressive Painting After Picasso catalog 1983 (Basquiat cover)By after Jean-Michel BasquiatLocated in NEW YORK, NYBasquiat Cover Art 1983: Rare early 1980s exhibition catalogue published on the occasion of: “Expressive Painting After Picasso”- a group featuring works by: Pablo Picasso, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francis Bacon, Georg Baselitz, Joan Miro & more at the Beyeler Gallery, Basel Switzerland. Medium: Exhibition catalog 1983; softcover, 48 pages. Dimensions: 10 x 11.5 Inches Very good overall vintage condition. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Jean-Michel Basquiat’s dramatic life and iconic paintings—which variously feature obsessive scribbling, enigmatic symbols and diagrams, and iconography including skulls, masks, and the artist’s trademark crown—make him one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. The self-taught painter embraced graffiti before committing to a studio practice. He found a mentor and friend in Andy Warhol, who helped the young artist navigate the 1980s New York art world. Across his oeuvre, Basquiat drew on his own Caribbean heritage; a convergence of African American, African, and Aztec cultural histories; classical themes; and pop cultural figures including athletes and musicians. The immediacy and intellectual depth of his paintings won him widespread acclaim both before and after his untimely death at the age of 27. Basquiat’s paintings now belong in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others. In 2017, Basquiat’s Untitled (1982) notched $110.5 million at auction and became the most expensive artwork by an American artist to ever be sold. Related Categories: Basquiat ephemera.
