Large Sculpture: 'Purple Fiesta: Baggage' Emotional Baggage Cart
Located in New York, NY
My Emotional Baggage Carts are vessels to dispose of racial trauma. The act of making, weaves the sting of macro and microaggressions into the cart, freeing me from these constraints. Each recovered shopping cart is unique, but they all are woven with upcycled materials like rope, paracord, grocery bags, rope lights, beads, fabric, and bottle caps. The cart is with a protective zip tie blanket to trap trauma and prevent its escape. For me, my Emotional Baggage Carts are a release, for you, they are an opportunity to look within and recognize any emotional baggage you, yourself may be carrying and release it. Theda Sandiford...

Nuit Blanche
Located in Montreal, Quebec
Text by Terence Sharpe There is a moment in Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris (1972) when the character Hari commits suicide by drinking liquid oxygen. As she is not actually a human, but an artificial hybrid product of the mysterious planet and the protagonists’ memories, she heals rapidly and is alive again minutes later. Her choice to take her own life is poignant, seemingly the action of a being becoming aware of its hopeless infinitude. Her realization that while the men will die on the space station or elsewhere, her existence is that of immortality, a deeply alienating notion that causes her to seek her own destruction. The Montreal artist Guillaume Lachapelle has one work that prompts a sense of eternal alienation that echoes Hari’s tragedy. The work greets the viewer with a empty doorway flanked by clinically white bookshelves...

Porcelain on granite Deniz Pireci's works; He tries to rediscover all the meanings contained in ceramics as a tool, to emphasize them even more, and sometimes simply to reveal them. As a tool, it is obvious that porcelain refers to fragility, craft, handcraft as well as mystery and the invisible. The use of porcelain in the field of contemporary art necessarily encompasses all these concepts, which it evokes as a material, within its scope. Pireci produces works that are included in many different trends with its approach to materials and art. At the same time, it not only questions our sovereignty over images, it creates an opportunity for us to lose it for a while. Untitled from the Ephemeral Mind series
Located in Montreal, Quebec
The mind is both organized and disorderly, linking thoughts and experiences unconnected within reality. It is unstable; memories are misplaced, sometimes forgotten, trapped in storage next to the illuminated, while others are never processed. This temporal structure is built up and destroyed within a lifetime, unique and never wholly accessible. My inspiration came from my own childhood understandings of how memories functioned. I imagined that the mind resembled a large filing room that required recurrent visits in order to maintain information’s availability. If memories were placed in a room and not accessed often enough, an individual could potentially forget the existence of an entire room and its memories. In order to prevent this loss, I regularly practiced “memory cleaning” days throughout my life, systematically revisiting important “files” and allowing me to retain some memories from as young as two years old. This piece is meant to be an impetus for viewers to further meditate and consider their minds and memories in relation to their understandings, their motivations, their fears, and their habits and question what they have remembered and forgotten, neglected, tried to forget, and what has become overwhelming, obsessive, and perhaps even relevant. Erika Dueck is a visual artist from Manitoba who finished her BFA (Honours) at the University of Manitoba in 2013 and is currently an MFA candidate at the University of Guelph. Her work has received several awards, including the National Winner of the BMO 1st Art! Invitational Student Art Competition, and recognition as one of eleven winners in the UNESCO Chair...
