Bas relief on hand-made paper; Visual statement of society’s role in conformity of the individual and acquiescence to nationalism. William G. Haendel is originally from Wisconsin, born in West Bend in 1926. He has had exhibitions in Canada, Sweden, Italy, and England as well as many in the United States. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison with a M.S. degree in 1954 followed by advanced study in both Seattle, Washington and London, England. In 1960 he was the recipient of a Fulbright Award to study silversmithing and sculpture in England. He is Professor Emeritus in Sculpture from Northern Illinois University and currently resides in DeKalb, Illinois. His most notable work is with cast paper. Images are created by transferring a wet sheet of hand-made paper to plaster molds.

Late Colonial Sitting Room, Boston MA, 1760 - Miniature Room by Kupjack Studios

A new middle class began to emerge in Colonial America and a migration into urban areas began. Unlike farmhouses, these new homes were elegant two-store homes designed in the new Georgian style, imitating the lifestyle of the upper middle class of England. The interiors consisted of a passageway down the middle of the house with specialized rooms off the sides, such as a library, dining room, sitting room or a primary bedroom. Unlike the multi-purpose space of the farmhouse, each of these rooms served a separate purpose. This new middle class had leisure time to entertain guests. In this sitting room, the Kupjacks have replicated this stately room with upholstered furniture, a working fireplace, decorative ceramics and silver accent pieces. This miniature room is presented in a custom leather bound case with faux books on either end as if it could be placed in a bookshelf. the room can also be installed in a wall.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Huang Yulong was born in 1983 in Anhui Province, China. In 2007 he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in Jiangxi Province. As one of the new generation of Chinese artists and part of the ‘post-80s generation’ and ‘only child’ generation, Huang is strongly influenced by the phenomenon of foreign culture in China, which he combines with his fascination with pottery and the material world. Huang is best known for his sculptures of Buddhas in hoodies, displaying an exchange of Eastern tradition and Western contemporary style. Halicarnassus was an ancient Greek city in Caria, in Anatolia. It was located in southwest Caria, on an advantageous site on the Gulf of Gökova, which is now in Bodrum, Turkey. The city was famous for the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, ranked as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Halicarnassus was loyal to the Persians and formed part of the Persian Empire until Alexander the Great captured it at the siege of Halicarnassus in 333 BC. Here, the Kupjack Studios have meticulously researched the era and have gone to painstaking detail to present this miniature version of Alexander's Tent. Based on a scale of one foot equals one inch, each piece of furniture, rug, decoration is fabricated with exacting detail.
