Art Subject: Window
"Maxwell Street" wall sculpture
Located in Glen Ellen, CA
Sandblasted carved glass, cast glass, bronze and wood. Steve Linn describes himself as a documentary sculptor, conducting meticulous research on each of his selected subjects and choosing which references to interpret for the piece he then creates. "I was born and raised in Chicago," Linn says, "and in 1956 before my 13th birthday, my father took me to Maxwell Street to buy me my first suit. This was a momentous occasion, not because I was getting a suit, but it was my introduction to the blues. Maxwell Street was the center of Jewish pushcart commerce and haberdashery emporiums, it was also where black blues musicians congregated, played, and thrived in harmony with their neighbors. My dad let me stay and listen that day and I became a life-long fan." The merchants provided electrical extension cords from their establishments to power the amplifiers of the musicians, and in return the musicians were an attraction to lure customers into the shops. Many famous blues musicians got their start on Maxwell Street having migrated to the city from the deep south: Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Bo Diddley, and Howlin...

Outsider Art Wall Sculpture: 'The Red House'
Located in New York, NY
Gérard Cambon was born in 1960 in Toulouse (Fr). He has a degree in political science and is a self-taught artist. In the earlier years of his life practiced and experimented with collage and model making. Later, with an interest in old machines and patinas he started collecting old and used objects, tools, and fragments of items whose previous lives remained obvious. When he travels, one of his greatest pleasures is to find materials in antique shops or ironmongeries. In 1994, he began creating Locomobiles and reliefs and presented them to the public for the first time at “La Jeune Peinture,” a Parisian art fair. In 1995 , he stayed during 8 months in the hospital for eight months (leukaemia) where he began preparing and creating plans for new Locomobiles and reliefs. As his health improved, he committed himself to his artwork and during the same year met a Parisian gallery owner who decided to organize a solo show for him, Le Galerie Beatrice Soulie in Saint Germain des Pres. He has shown his work since 1996 in Paris and since 2000 in the United States (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle). He is currently being shown by galleries in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg , Denmark, and the United States. He keeps on trying out new materials (fabric, leather, glass, plants, metals,…) that he integrates into his bas-reliefs: traction engines...

"Sleeping Swan" ceramic sculpture with lace, hand sculpted flowers and swan
Located in New York, NY
This wall-mounted sculptural installation is created with hand-built ceramic and glazes, presented on a shelf with vintage lace. The artist has incorporated pressed lace, ceramic flowers in dark pink which are mounted to a wall panel hung on the wall above the hand sculpted glazed ceramic figure of a sleeping swan. A contemporary sculptural tableau of a a swan with flowers floating above. This ceramic sculpture is featured in a solo exhibition of new works by Sascha Mallon, entitled, "Mending Dreams. Front Room Gallery is pleased to present, “Mending Dreams” a solo exhibition of new sculptural works by Sascha Mallon. “Mending Dreams” includes hand-build ceramics, assemblage sculptures and drawings which capture moments in time, accessed through memories and dreams. The forms and the figures in this exhibition relate to the artist’s Austrian heritage; she creates images of animals, people, and nature that reference allegories, myths, and stories, re-contextualized in contemporary life. She is particularly interested in expressing inner thoughts and feelings and how those relate to reality. Sascha Mallon’s work encourages viewers to slow down and to notice the beauty and wonder of the world around us. “Mountains are a recurring theme in my work. They are a metaphor for the body and also allude to my Austrian heritage. They refer to the border between inside and outside and represent stability and home. My mountain sculptures are formed out of broken pieces of glass and ceramics. This work started when I broke one of my favorite cups. The mountain represents the idea that when we face difficulties and challenges in life there are two possibilities: either we accept it and learn something, get stronger, and grow, or part of ourselves breaks and we carry the weight of the loss with us. The mountain is also a metaphor for the fact that many different pieces forming a whole are stronger than the individual parts.” -Sascha Mallon Another recurring subject in Sascha Mallon’s work is a series of figures in a position of waiting, sleeping, or dreaming. For example, her ceramic sculptures of female...

La déconvenue
Located in Montreal, Quebec
Text by Marsha Taichman [...] There is art unless there is so much missing we cannot build a structure around it.. - Kate Hall, from Water Tower, 1998-2000 (after Rachel Whiteread) Montreal artist Guillaume Lachapelle presents a new collection of works at Art Mûr that is sure to surprise and delight gallery goers. These works are full of pristine lines and beautiful intrigue. He constructs and presents miniatures and life-size pieces that are subversive and unusual upon close examination. In these pieces, scale can be quite skewed. Even when objects are the size that we expect them to be, say, a 15-foot silver gazebo that one may enter and stand inside, they seem small. Lachapelle’s works can be mounted displays of tiny mechanical-seeming devices, apparatuses of unknown origins with no clear purpose, despite the fact that they offer a distinct air of functionality. In the works that Lachapelle has selected for this exhibition at Art Mûr, his subject matter has moved away from human and animal scenes and delved deeper into free-standing machinations. This means that we will see a greater starkness and a closer focus on the materiality in his constructions. The collection is full of the unexpected and the unusual. A library with a sunken-in, curved interior of wavy shelves...

Ocean Portal
Located in New York, NY
Ben Young’s sculpture fluidly blends glass, concrete, bronze, steel, and light to depict romantic and pensive imagery highlighting the fragility of our climate and its most precious resource – water. Born in Australia and raised in New Zealand, Young is an avid surfer and environmentalist, inspired by a lifetime on and around oceans, bays, and reefs, with an intimate understanding of the challenges our precious ecosystems face. Young’s thought-provoking sculpture shows great range, portraying the beauty and solitude of life on the ocean, haunting depths of the deep sea, and stunning and relaxing upside of island life. Water is many things to many people, which Young encapsulates brilliantly in his work, encompassing themes of sustainability throughout. Using concrete to create mountains, crevasses, sand bars, and cliffs, Young’s innovative use of materials is transportative. With hand-carved glass as his guiding medium, Young amplifies light and its relationship with water – our most sacred element – to create a glowing unity that people from around the world connect with on a personal level, whether they are beachside or in the Desert. Ben Young’s exhibition Delicate Space at Chesterfield Gallery...
