Contemporary Art

CONTEMPORARY STYLE

Used to refer to a time rather than an aesthetic, Contemporary art generally describes pieces created after 1970 or being made by living artists anywhere in the world. This immediacy means it encompasses art responding to the present moment through diverse subjects, media and themes. Contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, performance, digital art, video and more frequently includes work that is attempting to reshape current ideas about what art can be, from Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s use of candy to memorialize a lover he lost to AIDS-related complications to Jenny Holzer’s ongoing “Truisms,” a Conceptual series that sees provocative messages printed on billboards, T-shirts, benches and other public places that exist outside of formal exhibitions and the conventional “white cube” of galleries.

Contemporary art has been pushing the boundaries of creative expression for years. Its disruption of the traditional concepts of art are often aiming to engage viewers in complex questions about identity, society and culture. In the latter part of the 20th century, contemporary movements included Land art, in which artists like Robert Smithson and Michael Heizer create large-scale, site-specific sculptures, installations and other works in soil and bodies of water; Sound art, with artists such as Christian Marclay and Susan Philipsz centering art on sonic experiences; and New Media art, in which mass media and digital culture inform the work of artists such as Nam June Paik and Rafaël Rozendaal.

The first decades of the 21st century have seen the growth of Contemporary African art, the revival of figurative painting, the emergence of street art and the rise of NFTs, unique digital artworks that are powered by blockchain technology.

Major Contemporary artists practicing now include Ai Weiwei, Cecily Brown, David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami and Kara Walker.

“Roses in a Porcelain Pitcher”
Located in Southampton, NY
Original oil on board still life painting of roses in a blue and white porcelain pitcher. Signed lower right by the artist and dated 1999. Condition is excellent. The painting is housed in a gold gallery frame with narrow linen liner. Overall framed measurements are 17.5 by 14.5 inches. Provenance: A Sarasota, Florida collector. John C. Traynor combines the 19th century element of atmosphere with the realistic, yet soft rendering of color and light reminiscent of the Dutch Masters to create his own distinctive style. John was born in 1961 and spent his early years growing up in Chester and Mendham, New Jersey. His classical training began at the Delbarton School in Morristown, New Jersey, and afterward he continued his art education at Paier College of Art in New Haven, Connecticut. As a merit scholar, John studied figure painting with Frank Mason at the Art Students League of New York. He concentrated on his understanding of form while studying drawing with Carroll Jones...

In the nearly quarter of a century since that pivotal show (which would come to define the Young British Artists), Hirst has become one of the most influential artists of his generation. His groundbreaking works include The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991), a shark in formaldehyde; Mother and Child Divided (1993) a four-part sculpture of a bisected cow and calf; and For the Love of God (2007), a human skull studded with 8,601 diamonds. "Pearl Royale" Platinum Sculpture 9' x 2' in Edition of 3 by Colin Burn

The Pearl Royale is the most luxurious vibrator ever created. Crafted from pure platinum its pave’ and channel set with over 70 carats of flawless white diamonds, royal blue sapphires, rare pink diamonds plus lustrous South Sea pearls. This exquisite sculpture is a truly unique piece of contemporary jewelry art that will be recognized for centuries to come. Sculpture comes with Limited Edition Artist Certificate of Authenticity and Jewelry Certificate of Materials. Artists Inspiration: “To encourage discussion and question society on the value we place on the sexual experience. From my observations it seems society could not reconcile such a luxurious item for the act of sex. I was of the mindset if we accept genuine luxury into other aspects of our lives then why not the sexual experience. It had to be outlandishly lavish with a high level of status, so the term fit for a king or queen was foremost in my mind. I wanted to create a unique piece of jewelry art that would hold its own and could proudly sit along side the world's finest crown jewels. Ultimately for me it symbolizes how we should Treasure the Erotic.” ABOUT COLIN BURN: Australian artist Colin Burn is a bold provocateur in the world of conceptual art, using his work to disrupt societal norms and spark critical dialogue often around uncomfortable truths. His art pushes boundaries, urging viewers to rethink their assumptions on value, power, and meaning, especially in contexts often deemed taboo or overlooked. Known for his masterful fusion of symbolism and opulence, Burn transforms ordinary objects into potent allegories, frequently employing their high monetary value to amplify the emotional and intellectual resonance of his themes. He understands that society frequently ties value to price, and this awareness is central to his approach. With an attention-grabbing allure, Burn’s work invites viewers to look beyond the surface, encouraging them to explore the deeper, often concealed meanings behind what they see—reminding them that true value lies not only in the material cost, but in the idea or theme that it represents. A compelling example of this is his Pearl Royale chess set...

SF 89-153.
Located in Östermalm, Stockholms län
Artwork size: 67 x 51 cm. Frame size: 112 x 97 cm. Free shipment worldwide. Archive number SF 89-153 in the Sam Francis Foundation. Stamped with the Sam Francis Estate logo and stamped signature on verso. Sam Francis’s paintings are a journey into a dream, a voyage into the landscapes of the soul where colours are lights on fire. Alongside names such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline, Sam Francis is an artist who has succeeded in demonstrating a total mastery of abstract expressionism’s impassioned and spontaneous genre. The explosions of colour – red, blue, green and yellow – the streaks, strokes and bold lines of his pictures are the physical synthesis of the deepest crevices of the soul. His colours create rhythmical motifs that, characteristically enough, can be called the “musicality” of his paintings. The work of Sam Francis provides a visible meeting place for the conscious and the unconscious. His pictures are the cross-fertilisation of what has already been experienced with what exists still only as desire, a struggle between melancholy and merrymaking. Influenced by C.G. Jung, the father of psychoanalysis, Sam Francis spent a large portion of his life exploring the premise that dreams, instincts and intuition provide, the keys which unlock the mysteries and meaning of our inner lives. He was also fascinated by the four ancient elements – earth, water, air and fire – which developed into a leitmotif in his work. Sam Francis was born in San Mateo in California, USA in 1923. After starting to paint at the age of around twenty, he soon found himself increasingly consumed by the power of art. He spent much of the 1950s in Paris, from where he not only made frequent excursions to a number of European cities, but also embarked on many journeys to South America and Asia. He continued to move from place to place, primarily in the USA and Japan, right up until his death in 1994. Sam Francis’s first...
