He studied sculpture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse from 1893 to 1896, where he trained in plaster works. He completed this teaching in the Barrias studio in Paris. He began to exhibit his works in 1899 at the Society of French Artists and in 1907 obtained a medal of honor at the Salon as well as an allowance to reside at the villa Abd-el-Tif in Algiers where he designed and produced the decorations. He returned there regularly until 1914. After the Great War, Poisson collaborated with the Compagnie des Arts Français with Süe and Mare. In 1922 the city of Niort commissioned Poisson a war memorial located on the esplanade of the keep. Poisson created the monument to the dead in Le Havre in 1925, considered his masterpiece. Originally from Tours, he obtained a municipal grant to study at the Fine arts Schoool in Paris. He learned sculpture there under the direction of Jules Cavelier and Louis-Ernest Barrias and became a laureate of the Prix de Rome in 1891. As a resident of the Villa Medici in Rome from 1892 to 1895, he befriended Adolphe Déchenaud who painted his portrait. His career earned him numerous public and private commissions and Sicard received various awards at fairs and exhibitions, including the medal of honor at the 1900 World's Fair and the medal of honor at the 1905 Salon. Having become a professor at the School of Fine Arts in Paris, François Sicard was elected member of the Institute in 1924 and president of the Fine arts Academy in 1930. Born Paris, France 1847; Died 1933 Victor Gilbert's natural ability as an artist was recognized early, but his family lacked the financial resources to send the young man to the École des Beaux-Arts. Rather than enrolling in the École, Gilbert was apprenticed to Eugene Adam as an artisan painter and decorator. His only formal education was evening classes with Pierre Levasseur at the École de la ville de Paris. Perhaps it was his early immersion into la vie quotidienne that formed the basis for his later choices of subject matter for his art, that of the markets and streets of Paris. Despite his lack of formal training, Gilbert's admissions to the Paris Salons of 1873 and 1874 were very well received by audiences and critics alike; at this time he was supported by the dealer Paul Martin, who was an important proponent of the Impressionist movement.
