Glowing Wave Crashing at the Shore - Seascape
Located in Soquel, CA
Highly detailed seascape by William Henry Blackman (American, b. 1930). A wave crashes at the shore, glowing from the sun shining through. Above the wave, a few gulls glide across the scene. The rocks in the foreground and the cliffs in the midground are finely textured, adding a lovely sense of realistic detail. Signed "Wm. Blackman" in the lower right corner. Artist's stamp on verso, along with other inventory markings. Artist's name written on edge of canvas. Presented in an ornate wood frame with a linen liner and fillet. Canvas size: 18"H x 24"W William Henry Blackman (American, b. 1930) was born in San Diego, CA in 1930. He spent most of his early years in West Los Angeles. Blackman began painting at age 12. In high school he majored in art so he could experiment with various mediums to find ways to interpret his ideas. In December of 1948 he joined the Navy and was stationed in Hawaii. He studied at Woodbury College where he learned advertising and graphic arts. In 1960 he bought a home with his wife Shirley in the San Fernando Valley and worked as an advertising manager. His position put him in contact with art directors and they would lunch together and then visit various art galleries in the area. He began oil painting again as a hobby. In 1964 he made an important contact through an associate at his agency. This person was a vice-president at Aaron Brothers Galleries and purchased paintings for them. They had showrooms in various major cities and sold original framed paintings to art galleries and furniture stores. He said they could possibly sell some of his seascapes so Bill began painting in his spare time. Gradually, they sold more than he could produce so Bill made the decision to leave the advertising business and devote his time to painting. Note: the original Aaron Brothers Art Galleries Certificate included with the painting. In 1965 the Blackman's moved to Thousand Oaks, California. He began his career as a fine artist and to this day resides in Thousand Oaks. He contracted with Aaron Brothers to be his exclusive agents and began specializing in seascapes. After a few years he added landscapes and some other subjects. Bluebonnet landscapes...

Romare Bearden, Dreams of Exile (Green Snake), 1971, by African-American, signed
Located in New York, NY
A North Carolina native, the African-American Romare Bearden spent most of his career in New York City. For several decades he was a social worker in Harlem. But of course he traveled widely, read and studied with great care, and created a phenomenal body of work. This 1971 lithograph is a good example of his oeuvre -- far reaching though it may be. It speaks to his skill and knowledge of contemporary printmaking while featuring a complex subject representative of his interests. A lush jungles is packed with flora and fauna. 'Green Snake' is part of the title and there is a particularly winsome reptile showing up so well on the sand-colored border between the dense forest and the aquamarine water. There are of course many other land and sea animals showing themselves -- even a curious ginger cat...

'Towards your Heart' Large scale Photo. Triptych Ocean, Sea, Blue, Beach Cottage
Located in Penzance, GB
'Towards Your Heart' Limited edition archival photographic triptych. Unframed, hand signed and numbered (Edition number 3 of 25) _________________ It is not the size Nor power from which you fly But towards your heart The wild Atlantic explodes in raw abandon, given scale in this daring dance by the graceful flight of the sea bird. Sophia's poetic photographs are an exploration of the balance in all things: in the sensual interplay of light and shadow; in wild raw energy and serene stillness; in chaos and harmony; in the enduring and the effervescent. They are a contemplation of the awareness that everything in existence is temporary, they speak of the ephemeral nature of all things. Moments, feelings, experiences cherished and appreciated in their impermanence, for that is where the beauty comes from. 'I work in a balancing act of control and freedom; of discipline and guidance, whilst simultaneously relinquishing all authority and throwing the odds to the winds, to chance encounters and the unexpected'. Photographic triptych: each of three parts measuring 30 x 20 inches. Each printing is bespoke to order and can be printed on a single paper 30 x 60 inches. Please contact me for further information, or send a message with your order. Limited edition of 25 Archival Print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag® paper, one of the most beautiful and high quality art papers available. The luxurious matt finish provides a reflection free image that is rich in detail, depth and tone. Hand signed, titled and numbered to the lower right corner on an approximately 1 inch white border. Each print comes with a Certificate of Authenticity featuring a signature and edition number. Other sizes available * Please note that images of the artwork in situ and framed are an indication of how the piece can look, and in the context of other artworks. Birds of Europe by John and Elisabeth Goult, 1832
By John Gould and Elizabeth Gould
Located in Paris, FR
Rare Set of 6 beautiful Naturalistic hand-colored lithograph prints by John Gould from his work Birds of Europe, embelished with gum arabic in vibrant colors. Published 1832 - 1837 by Hullmandel, Walter and Walton. Presented in gold leaf wood frames. Very charming . The price includes the set of 6 framed ones. John Gould (1804–1881) is the most prolific publisher of ornithological subjects of all time. In 19th-century Europe, his name was as well known as Audubon’s was in North America. Unlike Audubon, whose life’s work focused on one region, Gould traveled widely and employed other artists to help create his lavish, hand-colored lithographic folios. John Gould’s love of natural history was fostered in the gardens of King George III where his father was chief gardener at Windsor Castle. Although trained as a gardener, Gould’s interests quickly evolved, and at the age of 20, he was appointed taxidermist to the Zoological Society of London. After three years, he progressed to the position of curator of birds and chief taxidermist. In 1830, newly married, Gould and his artist wife, Elizabeth Gould...

Artist Biography - While Knorr’s images take some of their inspiration from the Indian tradition of personifying animals in literature and art, there is another almost subconscious strain to her work. Going back to the time of cave painting we see that these early visual artists not only recorded their lives and surroundings, but used art to express themselves. The depiction of animals in symbolic and powerful ways and the urge to create these images with the best tools at hand is a line stretching from these unnamed cave painters to Karen Knorr. Playfully combining technologies and genres, Knorr mixes digital...
