Santa Barbara art photographer Cheryl Medow creates images that entice the viewer to enter her world, both real and imagined.
Cheryl Medow's background in the arts is diverse, but interconnected.
Medow studied ceramics at the famed Chouinard Institute and received a BA in Art from UCLA, concentrating on life drawing with charcoal and pastels. Continuing her art education, she studied printmaking at Hand Graphics in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
With a wealth of materials and techniques, Medow layers her photographs and weaves them together to create visual narratives.
There have been numerous articles written about her work. Avian Alchemy by Becca Cudmore was published by Audubon News/Culture on June 5, 2015, Proof. National Geographic - An Altered Reality by Becky Harlan along with National Geographics Sunday Stills, Sunday, July 12, 2015 and an article in Inspire Adobe Photoshop For The Birds by Alyssa Coppelman in August.
In 2016, Medow was included in the SLIDESHOW Night at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Century City, California. She received the Juror's Award at PhotoPlace Gallery in Middlebury Vermont for Great Blue Heron With Chicks Revisited and her print will be exhibited from March 23 through April 22 and White Ibis With Fish will be part of the Online Gallery Annex at PhotoPlace.
Medow was a finalist in the 89th Annual International Competition at The Print Center in Philadelphia given the Olcott Family Award. She is also a finalist at the LensCulture Earth Awards 2015.
In 2015, Medow's images were exhibited at The G2 Gallery in Venice, CA and at Flock: Birds On The Brink / Ganna Walksa Lotusland, curated by Nancy Gifford...

Provenance: private collection - Cleveland, OH. Lithography and hand-coloring by American artist John T. Bowen (1801-c.1856). Comes from Audubon's famous seven volume portfolio "The Birds of America", First Royal Octavo Edition (1840-1844), which consists of 500 hand-colored lithographs. The preceding 1836 Havell edition of this work has a different title: "Black-bellied Darter", (Plate: CCCXVI - 396, No. 64).
Based on a drawing inscribed "New Orleans 1822 - redrawn ... 1836". This conspicuous bird had various names including "water turkey" and "Bec à Lancette".
The Anhinga, sometimes called snakebird, darter, American darter, or water turkey, is a water bird of the warmer parts of the Americas. The word anhinga comes from a'ñinga in the Brazilian Tupi language and means "devil bird" or "snake bird".
To make 'The Birds of America' more affordable and widely available, in 1839 John James Audubon began the first octavo edition, a smaller version of the folio which was printed and hand-colored by J. T. Bowen in Philadelphia. Employing a new invention, the camera lucida, the images were reduced in size, rendered in intermediate drawings by John James Audubon and his son John Woodhouse, and then drawn onto lithographic stones. These miniatures exhibit a remarkable amount of attention to quality and detail, as well as a meticulous fidelity to the larger works. Carmen Almon uses copper sheeting, brass tubing, steel wire and enamel paint to create exquisite botanical sculptures. She captures the fragility of a moment in time by interpreting particular plants based on her memories of them. “These botanical compositions seem to defy their sheet-metal origins to come alive. Branches bend, vines loop, leaves twist, and a few surprising bugs, from butterflies to beetles, drop in to colonize her plants.” Through her work, one is reminded of the beautifully illustrated botanical books of the 17th and 18th century – Linneaeus, Ehret, Redouté – which Carmen often refers to for inspiration. Each piece takes up to twelve weeks to complete, therefore, few are realized each year making them rare treasures.
In reference to our human connection to flowers, Carmen states, “Romance, marriage, funerals. Subconsciously, they represent so many things, innocent beauty, courage in the face of obstacles and continuity in the cycle of life and death. When I work on a plant, I am often thinking of this.”

A delightful painting of a mother duck with her ducklings by constant Ludovic Artz. A white duck can be seen sitting on a river bank surrounded by her five ducklings. Two of the ducklings are shown taking rest by her side as the others forage close by.
Constant David Ludovic Artz was born in Paris on 3 June, 1870, the son of David Adolph Constant Artz (1837-1890) and Josephine Jouanin. His father was a Dutch artist who had moved his family to Paris to set up a studio. The family returned to Holland in 1874 and settled in the Hague. Artz was taught art by his father and at the age of 12 enrolled at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. He also received tuition from Hendrik Mesdag (1831-1915) and Willem Maris (1844-1910) who had an influence on his subject matter.
He married Johanna Sophia Cecilia Ginjoolen at the Hague on 5 July, 1893. One of the witnesses was the artist Tony Offermans (1854-1911) whom he was apprenticed to at his studio. The couple went on to have two children together and to supplement his income, Artz also worked as an art teacher. One of his pupils was Leendert Scheltema (1876-1966).
After divorcing from his first wife in 1915, he married Lucie Sophie van der Hoeven in 1917. At some point he moved to Soestdijk, living there until 1926 when he relocated to Katwijk at Sea in. He returned to Soestdijk in 1931 where he died on 23 February, 1951.
Like his father, Artz was fascinated by nature and after painting a series of landscapes and seascapes began producing scenes featuring ducks and waterfowl usually on or by lakes and rivers. He was an expert at painting the play of light upon water and also preferred to work with smaller canvasses. His work can be found in private and public collections including the Rijksmuseum.
Presentation: The work is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.
