Area Nightclub Archive (Area nightclub NY)

By Fernando Natalici

Located in NEW YORK, NY

Area Nightclub Archive 1983-1987: A collection of 40+ items (including approx 30 club invitations) spanning the history of the seminal 1980s New York nightclub known as "Area". Area opened its doors in September 1983 and virtually overnight became the nexus of one of the most vibrant Downtown art and club scenes in New York. Every six weeks, they transformed the enormous space at 157 Hudson with a different art exhibit & performance theme. Area was the place where A-listers such as Andy Warhol, Francesco Clemente, Julian Schnabel, Madonna, JFK Jr. & many others went to see and be seen: A place where Basquiat DJ'd, while Keith Haring and Andy Warhol produced several installations. Area's wildly creative invitations became the hottest tickets in town and instantly collectible art in and of themselves. Further details: Comprised of 40+ items in total: approx 30 club invitations; 3 original darkroom photographs taken by & signed by Fernando Natalici - the art designer of each piece; 6 drink tickets; 2 original mailing envelopes; a Halloween handkerchief invite; plus an original advertisement proof for the 80s fashion publication Details Magazine (image 4). Invitation dimensions ranging from: 9.5 inches on the longest side to 3.5 inches on the shortest side + 1 invite folding out to 11x17 inches (image 8). 3 signed silver gelatin photographs measuring: 8x10 inches (2 works) & 5x7 inches (1 work); Ad proof (image 4): 11x15 inches. Most pieces generally in good overall vintage condition; with a couple or more invites in fair condition. Provenance: Obtained directly from the club's original graphic designer, Fernando Natalici. Rare and not to be passed upon. Literature/References: Area: 1983-1987 by Eric Goode Jennifer Goode (pub. by Abrams 2013). New York Magazine 2013: "It Was the Hottest Club in Town." New York Times November 2013: "Waking Area Nightclub From the Dead". Exhibitions: 'Area: The Exhibition': The Hole Gallery NYC November 2013. Area: Further History (New York Magazine 11/1/13): "Influenced equally by sixties-era happenings and the gonzo childhoods of its proprietors, Area opened its doors in 1983. The club, unlike any that came before it, underwent a painstaking transformation roughly every six weeks, with themes like Confinement, Suburbia, and Science Fiction that incorporated elaborate art installations with taxidermied bears...

Marlon Brando, Libertyville, Illinois, 1950 - Silver Gelatin Print

By Art Shay

Located in Chicago, IL

On assignment for Life Magazine in 1950, Art Shay photographed Marlon Brando at his family farm in Libertyville, Illinois, just north of Chicago. Looking straight into Art's lens, Brando is innocent of the fame that is about to become his world. He went on to a career spanning sixty years including winning two Oscars for Best Actor. This photograph is unframed. Contact the gallery for framing options. Art Shay Brando Portrait, 1950 silver gelatin print 20h x 16w in 50.80h x 40.64w cm ASY12088 “Art Shay’s photography shakes you up, sets you down gently, pats you on the head and then kicks you in the ass.” Roger Ebert “[Shay’s work] ranks with some of the greats of the 20th century.” Ellen & Richard Sandor, Renowned photo collectors “I’ve admired Art Shay’s work for almost forty years, and he keeps getting better. He can do anything with a camera, but what he mostly does is capture real moments and transform them into visual poetry. His work continues to be an inspiration to me.” William Friedkin, Director of French Connection “Art Shay is one of our finest photographers. His work over the past fifty years has artfully captured the beauty, humor, and pathos of America.” Studs Terkel “Art Shay is one of the best photojournalists I know. I’ve been a fan of his work since the early 1950s - before the launch of playboy magazine.” Hugh Hefner “Algren, Terkel, Royko, they gave us a voice. Art Shay gave us a face.” Tony Fitzpatrick, Chicago Artist “Art Shay is America’s Cartier-Bresson.” Thomas Dyja, author of The Third Coast “Chicago’s Art Shay in many ways is to American photography what Nelson Algren was to American writing: that rare and absolutely necessary citizen who’s blessed with a cold eye, a clear head, and a warm heart. What is it about Chicago that keeps giving us men like this?” Russell Banks, Novelist “The best images of Simone de Beauvoir and her times have been passed down to us by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Gisele Freund, Robert Doisneau, Georges Brassai, and in America, the Chicago-based Art Shay, all world-class photographers.” Christophe Loviny, Art Editor, Paris “Art Shay is the best photo-journalist Chicago ever produced.” Arthur Siegel, photographer; IIT Institute of Design President “I have one of Art Shay’s pictures over my desk. It reminds me every morning of my Chicago roots. Arts photos, like me, have the Chicago accent, which may be to say he’s telling you the truth. I think it takes a realist to see the humor in things. I know it takes a realist to see the depths of tragedy. Art’s work is so real it feels like a Madison Street guy tapping me on the forearm.” David Mamet

Atelier of John Gibson Venus in Marble Neoclassical Sculpture
Atelier of John Gibson Venus in Marble Neoclassical Sculpture

Atelier of John Gibson Venus in Marble Neoclassical Sculpture

Located in Pistoia, IT

Large white marble sculpture depicting Venus, from the workshop of John Gibson, Rome, circa 1850. Known as Venus Verticordia or Venus Colored, its history is fascinating. John Gibson (June 19, 1790 - January 27, 1866) was a prominent Welsh neoclassical sculptor. He studied in Rome with Canova and opened his own workshop there, where he worked until his death. Born in Wales and raised in Liverpool, John Gibson had a brilliant career. After completing his apprenticeship at the age of 26, this ambitious Welshman arrived in London as a promising artist. He exhibited several times at the Royal Academy and, within two years, realized the dream of every young sculptor of his time: to study in Rome. The next two years spent with Canova shaped his career and sculptural approach. Gibson also studied with Bertel Thorvaldsen and, at the age of 31, opened his workshop on Via della Fontanella, near Piazza del Popolo. John Gibson's workshop was one of the largest in Rome during his lifetime; it was an essential stop on the circuit of Roman sculptors' workshops, as described in Hawks Le Grice's famous 1840 manual. He employed specialized modelers, sculptors, and trainers and counted among his students several promising artists, such as Harriet Hosmer...

By Kazuo Sumida

Located in New York, NY

11 x 14 inch gelatin silver print. Edition 15. Signed on verso. Kazuo Sumida first visited New York in 1995. He found the city to be one of “both bustle and silence,” particularly the underground world of the subway, where he encountered “a place full of characters.” By 2002, he had produced a large body of work of images taken in this subterranean metropolis – tender scenes of lovers and children; gritty portraits of beggars for whom the subway is home; artists, musicians, commuters, and others who pass through the tunnels on their daily journeys. The resulting monograph, A Story of the New York Subway, was published in 2002. Sumida was born in 1952 in Kochi Prefecture in southern Japan. Although photography was not his formal career, Sumida has pursued the art throughout his life. He graduated from Osaka Photography Graduate School in 1983, and also studied at the International Center of Photography in New York, on a fellowship from the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. He lives in Japan, and continues to visit New York frequently. His work has been shown at the Tokyo Ginza Kodak Photo...

She Gives Her Heart Away

She Gives Her Heart Away

By Todd White

Located in Toronto, ON

29" x 16.5" Unframed Limited Edition Giclee with Hand Embellishment of 135 Hand Signed by Todd White Todd white captures restaurant, night and Hollywood scenes with contrasting colors serving the viewer’s eyes as those in his stolen scenes serve or are served-wine, coffee, cigarettes, cigars, and martinis. He creates timeless scenes of diverse attraction, of known intimacy. Within the exaggerated features and textured skin of his characters lies truth, yours and theirs. Distinctive bodies and details to lips, eyes, hair, skin, hands and what is held in each, separate and blend his characters’ lives. The smoke that rises from their lips, the drinks that linger at their fingertips, the clothing that adorns their bodies and the crowd created among lovers, friends, patrons and co-workers all speak a certain poetry. Each character depicts the subtleties of what one shows and what one hides. An asymmetrical face tells of an asymmetrical life, of how life wears and how we wear life — what we choose to carry in our hands and on our faces — how we wear ourselves, what smoke and color we stand in. Todd’s paintings are captivating, demanding a second look, often invoking humor or thoughts of familiar feelings — I’ve been there, I know them. Above all, the work is infectious and has caught the attention of the public (galleries cannot keep enough of Todd’s work in stock) as well as celebrities (Vin Diesel, Hugh Hefner, Macaulay Culkin, Eric McCormack, Ryan Stiles and Joe Rogan are collectors of Todd’s oil paintings). But who is the artist behind the art and where did his unique style come from? Todd began in at Warner Bros. Studios while working on the popular series, tiny toons. Through character clean-up and development, Todd began to forge his own artistic style. Shortly thereafter, Todd became part of the lead animation team for the internationally renowned cartoon, sponge bob square pants. Over the next three years, Todd sharpened his eye in storyboarding, illustration and character design. Throughout this period, Todd privately experimented with style and concept, eventually arriving at a process which guides him through every piece. The impact is apparent in his paintings; Todd’s rat-pack-meets-Picasso style results, in part, from his desire to reveal his characters’ innermost thoughts and emotions on their faces. Todd likens his portraits to his favorite episode of the Twilight Zone in which people wore masks that later became their faces and revealed who they truly were. Fast forward ten years later, and until Todd can conceptually see the story in his head, he refuses to paint a single signature knuckle curled around one of his famous martinis. "I actually name my pieces first and then i visualise each face and its personality. Then I develop each person’s story." The stark, unblemished delivery of his subjects is very much intended: whatever isn’t necessary to the story isn’t on my canvas. "I don’t waste a lot of time with backgrounds because they don’t interest me. They aren’t necessary. Instead i focus on what is essential. For example, the hands." Hands are a focal point for Todd, reflecting the subject’s state of mind as much as any body language or facial expression. Everyone’s hands are full of personality he surmises. Take Al Pacino; without his hands, he’s not nearly as interesting to watch. In addition to more obvious influences, such as Austrian expressionist Egon...

Debbie Harry photograph by Fernando Natalici: Cooler than cool... Debbie Harry, New York, 1977, photographed on the set of "The Foreigner" by celebrated New York underground photographer Fernando Natalici. The Foreigner (director Amos Poe 1977) - a seminal cinematic work at the height of the 1970's American underground - a film which has been documented in virtually every publication pertaining to the history of the late 70's New York Downtown Art scene. Digital C-Print on Kodak Lustre. 16 x 20 inches. Signed, titled & numbered from an edition of 20. Obtained directly from the artist. Excellent condition. About The Artist: New York based photographer Fernando Natalici is best known for his iconographic documentation of the downtown Manhattan art scene of the mid/late 70's and early 80's. Natalici’s portfolio includes sought after images of a young Patti Smith, Blondie, Talking Heads, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, The Ramones and more. As an Art Director, Fernando has played a key role in creating memorable visuals for historic NY venues such as CBGB's, The Mudd Club, Area and Danceteria. Fernando’s photo archive and art design were most recently featured in two highly regarded New York shows: “Area” at The Hole Gallery NYC (2014) & “Downtown New York Film” at The Museum of The Moving Image (2015). "The Foreigner" is a testament to the "punk" sensibility as manifested at CBGB during this time; the streets and lofts of SoHo and the Lower East Side art scene. Related Categories Deborah Harry...
