The elegant form of a nude female figure is captured in this sculpture by Canadian artist Richard Tosczak. This table-top piece is named after ‘Taygete’ one of the Pleiades--seven sister nature deities (nymphs) found in Greek mythology. She stands, head bowed, arms clasped around her neck as if in deep thought. Known for his beautiful figurative work, this piece retains the artist’s signature highly textured appearance and rich earthy patina. Tosczak’s pieces are first conceived on paper in quick pen and ink drawings. The spontaneity of this approach is evident in the almost abstract appearance of the sculpture. Mariette Lydis (Vienna 1887 - Buenos Aires 1970) is an Austrian painter and illustrator who was successful in Paris in the 1930s, in Montparnasse and then in Argentina, where she emigrated in 1940. Mariette Lydis was born on 24 August in Vienna, Austria 1887. From 1919 to 1922 she signed her works with the initials MPK for Marietta Pachoffer Karñy, a name derived from her first marriage in 1910 to Julius Koloman Pachoffer-Karñy, who died on 22 April 1922. Subsequently she lived in different cities around Europe, among others: Athens and Florence. She moved to France from 1926 to 1939, during these years she exhibited and became a member of the Salon d'Automne. She befriended Count Giuseppe Govone, the art publisher, in 1928 and married him on 1 August 1934, for whom she illustrated the books of many authors and cultivated a great friendship with Henry de Montherlant, which came about through the publication of a first in 1938 monograph by the author of Les Jeunes Filles. A grouping of four framed engravings of Hawaii, Tahiti, Tonga and Vancouver Island from the atlas of the official British Admiralty sanctioned journal of Captain Cook's 3rd Voyage entitled "A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean Undertaken by the Command of His Majesty, for Making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere", published upon completion of the voyage in London in 1784 by Strahan & Cadell. These engravings were made from drawings by John Webber (1752-1793), who was the artist on Captain James Cook's 3rd and final voyage of discovery. The set of engravings includes: "A Canoe of the Sandwich Islands, the Rowers Masked", Plate 65 in the atlas; "A Dance in Otaheite" (Tahiti), Plate 28; "King of the Friendly Islands" (Tonga), plate 20; "Inside of a House in Nootka Sound" (Canada), plate 42. These engravings are professionally framed in Koa wood, the same wood as was used to make the canoes of the ancient Hawaiians. Koa wood is legendary in Hawaii. Not only is this amazing wood native to Hawaii, but it is known for the deep rich colors and varied grain pattern. Koa has an honored heritage in Hawaii and is highly revered and sacred. The word “koa” means “warrior” in Hawaiian. The warriors of King Kamehameha the Great, created canoes and weapons from a wood plentiful on the Big Island of Hawaii. This wood became synonymous with the warriors themselves, and it became known as koa. These four engravings would make a wonderful grouping for a display of 2, 3 or 4 prints.
