Working within the traditions of Social Realism and the American Scene movement, he combined expressive draftsmanship with a modernist sense of design to create images of remarkable graphic power that address themes of labor, race, industry, and everyday American life. Born in Massachusetts in 1913, Panesis studied art at Syracuse University before joining the faculty of Alfred University, where he taught ceramics.
