Pierre Auguste Renoir Art

French, 1841-1919
Pierre-Auguste Renoir had his first experience with art in 1845 at the age of 4 when his family moved to Paris from Limoges and settled near the Louvre. By the age of 13, he had begun to seriously study and practice his work. Renoir started as an apprentice painter in a porcelain factory, where he spent five years. He then took drawing lessons from Charles Gleyre and in 1862, when he was 21; Renoir attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. It was at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris where Renoir met the future founders of Impressionism, Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, and Frederic Bazille. Renoir paintings remained in the traditional style during the 1860s. His portrait of his mistress, Lise Trehot, was traditional enough to be accepted for the 1867 Salon. Pierre Auguste Renoir’s paintings began to change shortly after he moved in with Claude Monet and Frederic Bazille in 1869. Renoir updated his technique and color scheme. Renoir painted mostly outdoors and began to use vibrant, pure colors and little brush strokes. Renoir, along with Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Alfred Sisley was part of the first exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists in 1874. It was at this exhibit that the term “Impressionism” was first used. The term was coined by a French art critic who took the name from a Monet painting. The term was meant to be derogatory and the show was a financial failure. Despite the failure, the artists continue to exhibit together and were joined by Edgar Degas and Georges Seurat. By the early 1880s, the public had begun to recognize the importance of the Impressionists’ work. In the early 1880s, Renoir traveled and painted extensively. He held his first one-man exhibition in 1883 in Paris. He received commissions from prominent Parisians and painted numerous group portraits of his friends, writers, and fellow artists. By 1887, Renoir was famous and donated several paintings to Queen Victoria for her Golden Jubilee. By the time he was 50, Renoir’s health began to decline. He suffered from cataracts, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankyloses, and spent the last twenty years of his life confined to a wheelchair. During this time he continued to paint and even took up sculpting.

His work presents a vision of a forgotten world, full of sparkling color and light. He once said: “Why shouldn’t art be pretty? There are enough unpleasant things in the world.” Born at Limoges on February 25, 1841, Renoir died at Cagnes-sur-Mer on December 17, 1919. When he was 13, Renoir entered a Paris porcelain painter’s workshop as an apprentice and developed a fine brush technique and facility with color. At 21, he attended courses at the École des Beaux-Arts and subsequently at Glyre’s. He made friends with Cezanne, Pissarro, Sisley, Monet, Bazille, and Diaz. In 1873, the artists Durand Ruel, Caillebotte, and Duret took an interest in his work. Renoir was involved in “The Society of Painters, Engravers and Sculptors,” which was founded in 1874, and witnessed the birth of Impressionism. From there, Renoir was immersed and able to spend time with his fellow artists of the day. He did not take up original printmaking until he was 50 years old, first with two small soft-ground etchings after his painting, “The Rustic Ball,” followed by an etching of Venus for the frontispiece of Mallarme’s Pages. Most of his engravings were done after his own pictures. In 1892, he did his first lithograph – a portrait of his son Pierre. In 1894, he met Ambroise Vollard, who played an important part in the production of Renoir’s and Cezanne’s lithographs...

Après le bain (After the bath)
Après le bain (After the bath)

Après le bain (After the bath)

By Pierre Auguste Renoir

Located in New Orleans, LA

For Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Impressionism's pre-eminent figure painter, depicting the nude was an exercise in bringing the canvas to life. He once said, “I look at a nude, I see myriads of minuscule shades. I have to find those which will make the flesh on my canvas come to life and resonate.” This compelling portrait by Renoir entitled Après le bain presents the nude figure of a woman in a serene, private moment, absorbed in the task of drying herself after a bath. The artist’s mastery of light and shading is incredible, achieving a sense of vitality in this otherwise ordinary scene. Renoir is celebrated for his figural work, especially his Rubenesque female nudes, however, it was not until the artist was in his forties that he depicted the nude with any frequency. In 1881, Renoir traveled to Italy, where he studied the works of the Renaissance masters and the ancient art of Pompeii and Rome. Upon his return to France, the nude became his favored subject, and he used the motif to combine the spontaneity of Impressionism with the solid modeling of classical painting. Renoir’s medium here, sanguine, a reddish-brown chalk, was used extensively in the Renaissance by Leonardo (who employed it in his sketches for the Last Supper), Michelangelo and Raphael. Its warm hue lends itself well to depicting flesh, and the chalk drawing allows for a greater focus on line, form and texture in a departure from the aspects of color and light that so often preoccupied the Impressionists. Après le bain conveys the impression of arrested motion with perfect naturalness, deftly capturing the moment before the elegant lines of the sitter's form change position. The sitter is almost certainly Gabrielle Renard, the nanny to Renoir’s children and a frequent model for the artist. Gabrielle was the cousin of Renoir’s wife, Aline, and came to Montmartre to work for the family at the age of 16. She developed a strong bond with the family and became a favorite subject for Renoir, appearing in several of his most important works, including his 1911 Gabrielle with a Rose (Musée d'Orsay). When Renoir began to suffer from severe rheumatoid arthritis that would eventually leave him unable to walk and scarcely able to grasp a paintbrush, it was Gabrielle that would assist the artist by positioning the paintbrush between his crippled fingers. Born in Limoges, France in 1841, Renoir began his career as an apprentice to a painter of porcelain wares. He later moved to Paris at the age of 21, enrolling at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts. It was here, while studying under Charles Gleyre, that Renoir attained a tremendous appreciation for the academic style of painting, a quality that would last throughout his career. This was also when he met Claude Monet and several other classmates, with whom he would later form the Impressionists. Working closely with Monet, Renoir began experimenting with the portrayal of light and its effect on his canvases. The youngest member of the Impressionist movement, an astute Renoir recognized how a subject was constantly changing due to the dynamic effects of light on color. Relying heavily upon his academic training that focused on composition, lines and descriptive details, Renoir distinguished himself among his contemporaries. His intuitive use of color and expansive brushstroke, along with acute attention to his subject, have placed him among the finest painters in history. This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the work of Pierre-Auguste Renoir from the Wildenstein Plattner Institute. Oil on Canvas Painting Portrait of the Italian Noble Family of Zanardi Count

By Lucia Casalini Torelli

Located in Firenze, IT

This museum quality old master oil on canvas formal portrait painting depicting the family of the Count Zanardi is signed by the artist- the female painter Lucia Casalini Torelli- and published in a book dedicated to Casalini Torelli’s workshop and academy. This palatial masterpiece artwork comes directly from the ancient Villa Maraini Guerrieri - Palidano di Gonzaga (Mantua), an historic Italian heritage building owned by the descendants of the family portrayed for more than two centuries, until 1998. The big scale of this oil on canvas masterpiece painting states the relevance of Lucia Casalini Torelli as a painter. The present artwork is a formal family portrait painting that aim to introduce the characters depicted according to their social role in the society. The noble family is all gathered under a loggia overlooking a park, the landscape in the background is partially covered by a beautiful red cloth on the right side. The father stands up and holds the hand of his eldest son, proudly introducing his future heir. The son wears a light-blue dress and red boots, he is depicted in a serious pose holding a black tricorn hat under his arm and a rapier sword on his belt. The mother wears an elegant gold and dark green brocade dress, she is sitting with her youngest daughter on her knees while her second son is by her side. The little daughter wears a lovely long red and dress with white lace and holds an apple on her hand. The son stands next to his mother and is dressed in a brown priestly clothes. This palatial old masters piece was probably painted in 1740 due to the similarities with Cardinal Doria’ s portrait, now on display at the Doria Palace Museum, the official residence of the Prince of Genoa. The painting features original canvas (“prima tela”) and antique original patina, it is in excellent overall condition considering the age, use and its large scale. A formal detailed condition report and the results of the inspection with the UV lamp accompanied by photos is available on request. As well as for its exceptional quality and quite perfect state of conservation, this painting is particularly important and even more valuable both for the artist who painted it and for its absolutely exclusive provenance. Lucia painted the most prominent and powerful noble families of her time, the location of these paintings is unknown to the art market as it is extremely likely that the portraits are still kept in private collections. Furthermore, Lucia was one of the most appreciated artists of her time, so important that she was admitted as a member of the academy at a time when women were forbidden to attend these studies. In 1706, Felice Torelli...

James Whistler (1834-1903), Venus, 1859. Etching and drypoint, printed in black ink on laid paper, an impression in the second (final) state: there was no published edition. 6 x 9 inches (15 x 22.6 cm) sheet 73/8 x 117/8 inches (18.8 x 30.3 cm) Reference: Kennedy 59; Glasgow 60 A very fine impression. A study of Héloïse, ‘Fumette’, asleep in bed, her head pressed into the pillow and the bedclothes covering her lower legs. This is one of three portraits Whistler made of Fumette in 1859: one of the others shows her standing and in the third only her head and shoulders are depicted. Venus is a work in the Realist tradition, and may be compared with Courbet’s nudes of the same period. The artist may also have had in mind Rembrandt’s study of Antiope in his etching Jupiter and Antiope. Venus was never published and there is no record of it being shown until 1898 when it was included in an Exhibition of Etchings, Drypoints and Lithographs by Whistler at H. Wunderlich & Co., New York. To have been overlooked for exhibition until so late in Whistler’s life might suggest that the subject was considered improper. Gabrielle Aux Grenades By Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Located in New Orleans, LA

Pierre-Auguste Renoir 1841-1919 French Gabrielle aux grenades (Gabrielle with pomegranates) Signed "Renoir" (upper left) Oil on canvas Pierre-Auguste Renoir is synonymous with Impressionist portraiture, known for his light and airy canvases that perfectly capture the beauty and warmth of subjects. Among his most cherished subjects are those closest to him, particularly Gabrielle Renard, his family’s nanny. Gabrielle is featured in some of Renoir’s most famous portraits, each rendering something new about her monumental presence in Renoir's life and artistic practice. This stunning portrait, entitled Gabrielle aux grenades, is one of the most detailed and compelling portraits of Gabrielle Renard to come to the market in recent years. As the nanny to Renoir’s children and the cousin of his wife, Aline, Gabrielle held a cherished place in Renoir's life and home. She played a crucial role in assisting the famed artist during his later years, positioning Renoir’s paintbrushes as he battled rheumatoid arthritis. This intimate portrait captures her gentle features in Renoir's iconic feathery style, epitomizing the essence of his celebrated oeuvre. From the quintessentially Renoir color palette to the delicate rendering of Gabrielle's eyes and the fruit before her, Renoir's affection for the subject is evident in this intimate work. Painted in 1915, this portrait stands as a testament to the artist's prolific career, created during its final chapter. Despite suffering from arthritis, Renoir nonetheless achieves a rich depth of color and meticulous level of detail indicative of his finest technique, making this portrait an exceptional rarity. Renoir’s portraits of Gabrielle are now displayed in major museums and prestigious private collections, including the Musée d’Orsay, the National Gallery in London, the Harvard Art Museums, the Musée de Grenoble and the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, which houses the largest collection of paintings by Renoir...

PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR Le Chapeau Épinglé (2e planche). Color lithograph, 1898. 600x488 mm; 23 5/8x19 1/4 inches, full margins. Edition of 200. With the second printed signature in the stone, lower left. Printed by Auguste Clot, Paris. Published by Vollard, Paris. A very good impression of this important lithograph with strong colors. Renoir (1841-1919) was, along with Edgar Degas, Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, a founder of the Société Anonyme Coopérative des Artistes, Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs and a key organizer of the 1870s Impressionist exhibitions. He is best known for his renditions of the sensuous and monumental bathing nudes that he produced from the 1880s onward, many of which were inspired by the works of Titian, Rubens, and 18th-century French painters such as Boucher and Fragonard. Like many of his contemporaries, Renoir embraced printmaking as a medium that allowed for more freedom of expression and experimentation. Ambroise Vollard, the eminent Parisian dealer and publisher, and Auguste Clot, the famed lithography printer, were both extremely instrumental in Renoir's foray into printmaking. They greatly encouraged and facilitated his practice of the medium. Vollard met Renoir during the height of Renoir's career and saw the opportunity for lithography to help disseminate the artist's ever popular work, and Clot worked closely with Renoir to masterfully capture the delicate quality of his pastels in color lithography. Renoir began producing lithographs and etchings in the late 1880s and created an oeuvre over the following two decades consisting of 25 etchings and 29 lithographs, many of them commissioned for various albums or books. His most famous prints reproduce popular compositions he had established in earlier paintings. The current lot is based on an 1893 oil and pastel painting which represents the artist Berthe Morisot's daughter pinning a flower on her cousin's hat. The same subject was reproduced in a series of etchings by Renoir...

La Danse à la Campagne (Dance in the Country)

By Pierre Auguste Renoir

Located in Palo Alto, CA

Pierre-Auguste Renoir brings his subjects to life in La Danse à la Campagne (Dance in the Country), 2e planche, c. 1890, so much so that you can almost imagine the music. The people depicted in this etching are Renoir’s brother Edmond and Suzanne Valadon. Using swift and careful lines, Renoir creates areas of dark and light that add incredible depth to the image. The lines are expressive of movement, and Renoir captures this lively moment in time. The woman’s dress sweeps up as she is spun around the dance floor by the gentleman. His own coat flairs out as they dance. These little moments of movement bring truth to the entire etching. Created circa 1890, this etching on wove paper is stamped with the signature of Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Limoges, 1841- Cagnes-sur-Mer, 1919) in the lower right margin.
