Note:
The Musee D’Orsay (see photo) has a very similar oil painting, "Scene de tribunal", of an elegant woman and lawyer. In the Musee D’Orsay painting the figures are reversed from the current composition. The central female subject wears the same hat as in this example.
The Tate Museum has a legal subject matter painting by Forain entitled "Counsel and Accused", dated 1908. In the detailed provenance, the first owner of the painting was Bernheim Jeune & Cie, acquired from the artist. (Tate accession N04789)
“From 1900, his palette was also enriched with pathetic courtrooms where, following Daumier, he protested against human injustices. His style becomes even more incisive and the clarity of his impressionist works is replaced by chiaroscuro.”
